My ltsp server is running 10.04.3 and I want to copy the sources.list from the server to the chroot then update the chroot. I've googled but not found reassurance that this isn't a bad idea. What do you think?
20:35alkisg has joined IRC (alkisg!~alkisg@ubuntu/member/alkisg)
20:37vagrantc has joined IRC (vagrantc!~vagrant@75-150-46-245-Oregon.hfc.comcastbusiness.net)
20:39
<alkisg>
dgroos: it's not a bad idea, but you shouldn't have to do it, in 10.04 all available sources (universe etc) should already be enabled in chroots

<alkisg>
Thin clients don't receive an if-up event on boot, I wonder if LTSP should trigger one to emulate normal boots...
20:46
<dgroos>
alkisg: what I'm trying to do is repeat the uninstalling of games on my other server that you helped me with a couple of weeks ago.
20:48hughessd has left IRC (hughessd!~hughessd@71-20-34-17.war.clearwire-wmx.net, Quit: hughessd)
20:48
<alkisg>
You don't need a sources.list to *uninstall* packages...
20:48
<dgroos>
And, I get to the point of reinstalling all of the ubuntu -edu-secondary packages, individually, and it says that it, for example, "E: Couldn't find package did-gnome
20:48
<alkisg>
Wait, wait, why would you have to reinstall?
20:49
<dgroos>
:) it's a bit complex...
20:49
<alkisg>
OK, take it slowly from the start :)
20:50
<dgroos>
I need to remove the game ktuberling, but went removing it, I get the message that it will also remove the ubuntu-edu-secondary packages.
20:50
So, as a work around, I found what packages were part of ubuntu-edu-secondary...
20:50
then went to install them with apt-get install (and then all of them)...
20:51
and thus they would be marked as individually installed.
20:51
and so even if the package was removed, I'd still have all the packages--it was really a rather clever idea of yours.
20:52
<alkisg>
OK so far, but I didn't yet get the part about why you need to reinstall stuff
20:52
<dgroos>
The prob is that when I try to install them separately I get the message that I can't, so my first thought is that I don't have the correct sources.lists.
20:52
<alkisg>
What's the exact message?
20:53
<dgroos>
in on the server via nx, let me get to this irc via there...
20:53dgroos1 has joined IRC (dgroos1!~dgroos@205.215.177.157)

<dgroos1>
from within the chroot...
20:55
dia-gnome, inkscape, kalgebra, kalzium, kbruch, kig, kmplot, kstars, ktouch, ktuberling, kturtle, kwordquiz, marble, parley, qcad, ri-li, step, vym
20:55
oops...
20:56
Here's the command w/the start of reply...
20:56
apt-cache show ubuntu-edu-secondary | egrep '^Depends|^Recommends'
20:56
Depends: dia-gnome, inkscape,
20:57
Then, as per the instructions I had copied down I entered the command: apt-get install dia-gnome, inkscape, (and all the rest from the list).
20:58
and got in reply... Reading package lists... Done
20:58

20:58

20:58
E: Couldn't find package dia-gnome,

20:58
<dgroos1>
So that's when I started looking into the sources list
20:59
<alkisg>
apt-cache policy dia-gnome
20:59
In the server + the chroot
20:59
500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid/main Packages
20:59
So it's in main, it should be available for installation in your chroot

21:01
<dgroos1>
I did the apt-cache command and it gave seemingly identical results in both main server and chroot...
21:02
<alkisg>
dgroos1: it sounds strange, do you mind if I have a look around myself, to get ideas for what can be wrong?
21:03
<dgroos1>
ah... of course when YOU tell me to try it it works! ;)
21:03
<alkisg>
Haha
21:03
<dgroos1>
:D so now that you are on line, let me try again ;)
21:04
So, this worked: apt-get install dia-gnome
21:05Parker955_Away is now known as Parker955
21:05
<dgroos1>
And this didn't: apt-get install dia-gnome, inkscape, ...
21:06
<alkisg>

21:06
E: Couldn't find package dia-gnome,
21:06
(11:58:01 μμ) dgroos1: E: Couldn't find package dia-gnome,
21:06
Yes that's what I was just looking
21:06
No commas allowed there
21:07
<dgroos1>
ah... so I can do a list of things to install, but not comma separated.
21:07
I *should* have known that :)
21:07
<alkisg>
dgroos1: Yup. Btw, did you see www.epoptes.org? :)
21:07
<dgroos1>
thanks.
21:07
I'll check!
21:07
<alkisg>
If you see any syntax/grammatical errors, please ping me!
21:08
It can be installed in parallel with the sch-scripts version that you have
21:08
(if you don't want to lose the menus for ltsp-upate-image etc)

Other than the "server" menu, all other features should be there too
21:09
<dgroos1>
Will do. And will do.
21:09
<alkisg>
ty :)
21:11
<dgroos1>
Grammar etc looks great.
21:14
I do think it needs an embedded audio of someone saying the word--it's always weird saying a word that you have never heard. The audio would give people a verbal handle on your product.
21:18
Also, you might want to put the word, (a Greek word currently used to mean overseer) since the linked-to page talks about the "An initiate in the Eleusinian Mysteries;" which fits nicely, I'd say, w/your product!
21:34
<alkisg>
dgroos1: could I put the pronunciation there? it's pronounced "hepoptees", but I don't think this is a correct way to write the pronounciation..
21:40
<Phantomas>
alkisg: IPA :D
21:40
<alkisg>
Phantomas: can someone actually read IPA? :D - or, would you do the honors and put the embedded audio there? Someone told me you have a nice voice... :P
21:41
<Phantomas>
nah, yours is better ;) :P
21:41
but IPA is just for this purpose :)
21:42
<alkisg>
OK, so how is it spelled in IPA?
21:42bobby_C has left IRC (bobby_C!~bobby@85-124-22-227.teleworker.xdsl-line.inode.at, Ping timeout: 265 seconds)

http://el.wikipedia.org/wiki/Βοήθεια:Οδηγός_προφοράς_IPA
21:45
<alkisg>
So, ɛpoptis? I don't think that would help...
21:45
<dgroos1>
alkisg: where?
21:45
<alkisg>
Instead of the audio, to put some text representation of the pronounciation...
21:46
<dgroos1>
That takes skills/knowledge to properly interpret.
21:47
<Phantomas>
here http://www.equipgodspeople.com/lexicons/new-testament-greek/2030/ they say ep-op'-tace
21:47
but I don't think it's correct :p
21:48
<dgroos1>
And one is left with uncertainty... Perhaps the two of you could sing it in harmony ;)?
21:48
<Phantomas>
here too http://classic.net.bible.org/strong.php?id=2030
21:51
<alkisg>
Hehe
21:53
Phantomas: that second link looks better than the wiktionary one, /me puts that instead...
21:54
<Phantomas>
or we can update wiktionary :p
21:54
<dgroos1>
Don't be shy guys!
21:59
<alkisg>
Meh, /me considers the subject closed since that last page has a pronounciation - Phantomas if you want to update it and put your nice voice there, do so :D
22:02
<dgroos>
The bible link? I'm not finding an audio--where it is?
22:03
<alkisg>
Not audio, just text pronounciation
22:03
<dgroos>
ahhh...
22:09
<dgroos1>
Just tried epoptes via nx using the virtualbox fatclient and I see you have indeed updated it.
22:10
Simplified and streamlined things--nice.
22:10
<alkisg>
The first part was removing the non-relevant parts of sch-scripts
22:10
Next part is putting lots of more features there :)
22:11
So the GUI will be less simple in the future
22:11
In the left it'll have a group (class) editing list view
