gp_alt_: you need to edit ldm/gtkgree/greeter.c, search for "LDM_FORCE_LANGUAGE", read the code there, and then do the same for a new LDM_DISABLE_SHUTDOWN directive at line 570

But keep in mind that there are many keyboard shortcuts for rebooting in linux that you'd also need to disable...

alkisg: Thanks for the tip about shutdown. I handled the ctrl-alt-del one and removed the click options from the desktop. I am mainly trying to prevent users with good intentions from causing problems unintentionally. So if I don't catch every case at the moment that is fine. I just want to get rid of the easy options

I guess I could take a more diligent route. Does anyone assign static ips at the dhcp level for their thin/fat clients and use WOL to keep them booted?

<ricotz>
hello, is someone already using the lts-vivid (3.19) kernel on trusty in a client chroot? last time I tried it failed due missing overlayfs module - lts-utopic (3.16) works fine
14:31
<work_alkisg>
ricotz: known problem, that part will need fixing
14:31
Do file a bug though
14:31
!ltsp-bug
14:31
<ltsp`>
ltsp-bug: To file a bug report for upstream LTSP, go to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ltsp
14:32
<ricotz>
work_alkisg, ok, I see
14:32
<work_alkisg>
The overlayfs module was renamed to overlay
14:32
So it's a matter of trying both names, overlayfs and overlay
14:33
<ricotz>
ah ok, so just the related commit needs to be backported
14:33
<work_alkisg>
Well, there was indeed a fix in debian but I'm not quite sure it fixes the ubuntu issue
14:33
<ricotz>
afaics trunk does that check
14:34
<work_alkisg>
http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ltsp-upstream/ltsp/ltsp-trunk/revision/2639
14:34
<ricotz>
yeah. that one
14:35
<work_alkisg>
I remember an issue with that... ah
14:35
I think it was like this:
14:35
upstream and debian call it "overlay"
14:35
ubuntu continues to call it "overlayfs"

14:36

14:38
the bug will still be there :D
14:38
<ricotz>
yeah, I can't investigate it until then though ;)
14:39* alkisg checks in a willy vm...
14:39
<ricotz>
yeah, it is probably broken on vivid and wily too
14:40
alkisg, thanks for the info
14:40
<alkisg>
You're welcome
14:46
<vagrantc>
overlay vs. overlayfs?
14:46
<alkisg>
yup... but I see in wily that they have it as both overlay _and_ overlayfs, so it'll probably work
14:47
<vagrantc>
depends on if there's backwards compatible syntax
14:47
<alkisg>
If we try "overlay" first, we don't need the backwards compatible syntax, you're using the new syntax there
14:47
You did it fine :)
14:48
<vagrantc>
ah, right, ubuntu defaults to NBD, so that should work
14:48
<alkisg>
I need to do the same in cleanup.d
14:48
(for ltsp-pnp)
14:48
<vagrantc>
ah, right

awei: are you still trying with read-only nfs?
18:19
<awei>
i rebuild the client image
18:19
and am using read-only nfs
18:20
<alkisg>
Which kernel are you using in the chroot?
18:20
ls /opt/ltsp/i386/boot/vm*
18:20
<awei>
vmlinuz-3.13.0-53-generic
18:20
<alkisg>
Hm, that shouldn't have an issue...
18:21
Do you get a shell?
18:21
So that you see if you have a cow file system or not...
18:21
<awei>
i get the prompt for username
18:21
<alkisg>
Try this: ltsp.break=50-fstab
18:21
<awei>
when i enter and hit return. it just returns blank screen
18:21
<alkisg>
Put this in pxelinux.cfg/default
18:21
!quiet-splash
18:21
<ltsp`>
quiet-splash: to disable the splash screen in Ubuntu, in order to see any boot error messages, run sudo gedit /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/pxelinux.cfg/default and remove quiet splash plymouth:force-splash vt.handoff=7
18:21
<awei>
ok
18:22
i removed quiet splash
18:22
<alkisg>
Replace quiet splash with ltsp.break=50-fstab
18:22
<awei>
i see the client locating USB devices, etc
18:22
<alkisg>
There, check if the root file system is writeable
18:22
<awei>
it's not writeable
18:22
<alkisg>
I.e. try `touch /hello`
18:22
<awei>
ok
18:22
i'll try that
18:22
<alkisg>
Watch out for any error messages
18:23
E.g. "overlayfs: nfs is not a supported file system for lowerdir"
18:23
<awei>
i'm getting that error
18:23
<alkisg>
OK, then it affects 3.13 too, at least in ubuntu
18:23
The problem is that overlayfs is not implemented well and it doesn't work over nfs
18:23
<awei>
how do i use different kernel?
18:24
<alkisg>
So, switch to nbd....
18:24
<awei>
but, i had it working at one point using NFS
18:24
was that because i had it read/write?
18:24
<alkisg>
No, because of older kernel probably
18:24
<awei>
ok
18:24
<alkisg>
At some point ubuntu must have dropped its own patched overlayfs in favor of the upstream one
18:24
<awei>
i c.
18:25
<alkisg>
I don't know exactly... it will work with aufs though
18:25
<awei>
ok, will try
18:26
thanks
