didn't work but i the meantime i found the problem
i toke another monitor and now everything is working fine
seems something with resolution or something
got another question in the mean time:
i installed firefox and flash plugin as local app with nat stuff in order
but should i install shockwave and java jre also as local app ?
or just on the server
all of the port 80 requests seem to be going out over the ltsp server... so there is no way to block the client based on internet port... how to block a single user then?
is there some kind of packet mangleing or nat going on here?
how does the ltsp server handle the requests made by the client for internet resources?
does it communicate internet requests over a specific port for the client?
because it seems like the ports keep changing... If I block and reboot... it sets a different port
yoshi__: if you run firefox as local app, you should install its plugins in the chroot as well
Gadi: how's it going?
ftherese: applications running on the server make requests from the server, local apps make requests from the client
bieb: not bad - keeping the plates spinning
Gadi: I hear that... I am trying to finalize plans to make it to BTS
nice. sadly, I will have to see your pretty face in the blogs...
my wife is due with our third on Oct 27th
gadi tx for the tip :)
Gotcha.. I can see the reason to not make the trip
yeah - don't want to give birth in the backwoods of Maine ;)
is anyone else having a problem connecting to us.archive.ubuntu.com?
or have to drive like a wild banshee to get back to NY
|09:13||johnny1 has quit IRC|
bieb: LTSP BTS eh? Thinking about getting more involved?
CAN-o-SPAM: yeah I am.. I cant program.. but am willing to help where I can.. and of course spread the word
bieb: how about documentation ... can you write techy? ;)
CAN-o-SPAM: I will be giving a presentation next June at the Legal Education conference I attend each year about how we used LTSP in our labs
bieb: have a link?
CAN-o-SPAM: yeah.. one sec
We were at Univ of Colorado Law last June.. will be at Rutgers Univ law, in Camden NJ next June
bieb: I hope that doesn't overlap with NECC
bieb: whats the title of the pres?
I'm sure that NECC would love a presentation on that subject too ;)
CAN-o-SPAM: I haven't announced it yet.. they wont do a call for speakers until Jan or Feb
(their Open Source Lab uses Revolution Linux's LTSP distro)
Lumiere, "Revolution Linux's LTSP distro" ??
or just Revolution Linux
they use ubuntu at revolutionlinux afaik
Lumiere: the conference is geared for Law School technology primarily
with LTSP :)
ogra: isn't it based on but not identical to?
|09:23||* Lumiere was led to believe it|
should be identical
they might add additional ltsp packages i.e. cluster stuff in the default install
bieb: let me know if u want/need anything to help ur presentation, we can talk
ogra: ever used cluster?
i havent touched LTSP for a long time apart from adding ARM support
CAN-o-SPAM: sounds great.. I know the guys from Rutgers pretty well and they are big Linux guys.. I may talk to him and see if he can set me up a quick lab.. or some way I can do a live install while I am talking and then login to show how easily it works
shout out to all my boys in Camden!
and Gadi raises the roof ... again
Gadi: its a good group of peeps
no diggity even
bieb: how many attendees last year?
CAN-o-SPAM: I would have to verify..
question: local apps is working perfectly with ubuntu jaunty but i don't have sound anymore ? while my sound was working before when i did't use firefox as local app
100 500 1000?
more than 250.. I will see if I can get the numbers.
it varies due to location and budget. Next year it will have more east coast schools than this year, since travel budgets have been cut in alot of colleges

hey all, im cross posting this in #ubuntu as well, but i have an interesting problem... it seems that my either my NFS or NBD daemon on my ltsp server crashes almost every thursday/friday. once it crashes the ltsp clients can no longer connect and the whole server starts becoming unresponsive (down to the point where I can't even login at the console, it hangs right after the motd). does anyone have any clues as what
could be happening? are there cron scripts that run on thursday or friday that might be causing some havok?

Is there some common bug in jaunty alternate cd causing Build LTSP chroot fail?
I am trying to install a demo server on a laptop and that stage failed twice
Do you get an error message?
E.g. "you only have 1 network card..." etc?
Not that kind of error message.
I only get a red screen saying "Build LTSP chroot failed"
I have never seen this before.
I think at that point you can press alt+ctrl+f2 and see the logs
...but even if it fails, you can still run ltsp-build-client later on
That's what I thought, too.
I've seen that error too, but only on beta releases, not with the final
I will first upgrade the installation with aptitude and tryi building LTSP again.
This one is final :/

you installed the ltsp by chosing in the start the F4 option
or did you install ltsp with apt-get install ltsp-stand...
after jaunty was installed ?

and then build the client
and everything works ok

I'm looking to use local apps on my thin clients, and am not sure how to set up my dhcpd.conf
|15:44||vagrantc has quit IRC|
Don't know if this is of any use: http://www.ltsp.org/twiki/bin/view/Ltsp/LocalApps
I see this line: option root-path "/opt/ltsp/i386";
Would I just change my config so that everywhere it reads /opt/ltsp it would then read /opt/ltsp_w_localapps ?
I've been following the docs for localappsjaunty, and it doesn't specify *what* the changes to dhcpd.conf are. They are fairly obvious, but I just want be sure to get it right
Mip5, which docs have you been following?
|15:48||otavio has joined #ltsp|
There's a wiki page which has too complex instructions, imho..
|15:48||Egyptian[Home] has quit IRC|
Mip5: yeah, too complicated
You'd better just make a backup of your /opt/ltsp/i386, and go ahead and install localapps in the existing one
No other changes would be necessary...
|15:50||makghosh has joined #ltsp|
oh - you think that would be good? I guess I could just go and copy back the backup to the original if it failed, huh? Okay - that makes sense.
Yeah, if it failed you could rm the new one and mv the old one back to its place
Mip5: but undo any changes that you made while following that page
|15:53||otavio__ has joined #ltsp|
alkisg - right. I just started down the path by creating the alternate chroot. I can just whack that.... I'm looking for the right command to copy the chroot. Would it be cp -a /opt/ltsp /opt/ltsp-backup
With a sudo in front, yeah, that sounds about right...

Mip5: it might be easier/better than setting up nat. depends on your other requirements.
Mip5: I think that the page you said, https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/ThinClientHowtoNAT works ok...
Mip5: btw, i am pretty sure you do *not* need to do nat just to use firefox. simple routing should be sufficient.

Hello, forgive me for my ignorance.. but if i wanted to beable to have ltsp running without pxe or dhcp would that be possible
like perhaps like a remote x session where i could connect via a client to the server?
it wouldn't really be LTSP at that point, just remote X.
unless your OS was still coming over the network.
well i already have dhcp running on my network, and i wanted to just beable to connect to the virtual machine over the net

does LTSP need password-based auth to be enabled in the host's SSH settings?
nubae_: see above
it connects via ssh
Ryan52: hm. all of my users have weak passwords.
so use cracklib and expire all of their passwords?
I know that password expiry should work with LTSP, not sure about cracklib (I've never used it with PAM and SSH before)
Ryan52: how can I prompt my users for new passwords on their next login?
Ryan52: It does, I added it because I need it where I am.
lfaraone: If you simply expire their passwords, ldm will prompt them for new passwords next login.
sbalneav: I know it's supposed to, but I also know that we've broken it before.
just use normal password expiry stuff (sorry, I dunno how to do that, vagrantc handles it at my LTSP install :P)
lfaraone: "man chage" might help.
or might just cause you to screw up and lock everybody out..
man shadow as well
good luck :)
see, I have to create accounts for 100 new students. and I don't want to collect passwords from all of them, so I just set their password to something like "1984compsci!" (not really like that, but about the same level of security)
