<miks>
Hi all!
04:47
I'm new to IRC, so I'm not quite sure how this works
04:49
I've got some basis LTSP questions, anyone willing to help?
04:57
I'm guessing that I just ask my question and look through the logs for a reply, so here goes
04:57
I setup an LTSP Computer Lab for my kids' school a year ago, and it was running 9.10 fine
04:58
Ubuntu 9.10 that is
05:00
Now I'm trying to get it running on Edubuntu 10.10 and it won't work at all. Thin clients boot up to a blank screen after the Ubuntu Logo, which flickers occasionally
05:00
I can change sessions with Ctrl-Alt-F1, but interestingly enough it only lasts for a few seconds before switching back to a blank flickering screen.
05:02
I have a feeling that Unity is the culprit here, or something else with my Xorg setup, but I'm having trouble diagnosing it. I'll be trying 10.04 tomorrow in the hopes that something pre-unity will work okay, but would love some actual troubleshooting tips.

16:01
<Hyperbyte>
Home. :)
16:01
How's America?
16:01
<alkisg>
There's something awfully wrong with it
16:01
The sun is up at night, and the moon at day!
16:01* alkisg still has jet lag :
16:01
<alkisg>
:(
16:01
<Hyperbyte>
"still"?
16:02
You've been there, what, 34 hours?
16:02
<alkisg>
Well, after two nights'... or days'... sleep
16:02
So little? I've walking for 20 hours already :P
16:03
<Hyperbyte>
Heheh
16:03
We'll talk more after dinner. ;-)
16:03
Good evening by the way. ;-)
16:04
<alkisg>
Good... whatever, my internal clock's broken!

<Hyperbyte>
DawnLight, what exactly do you want to know?
18:41
<DawnLight>
Hyperbyte, i'd like to understand the process and the programs involved
18:42
<Hyperbyte>
Process is client gets DHCP lease, fetches minimal boot image from TFTP, mounts a real NBD root image from the server, boots Linux and loads the login manager, which connects to a session on the server via SSH
18:42
That about it?
18:43
<DawnLight>
how does client know the whereabouts of the nbd?
18:43
<Hyperbyte>
I'm sure there are documents on it. There's a wiki with lots of technical info on sourceforge, as well as one on Ubuntu.
18:43
Whereabouts of TFTP image is sent along with DHCP lease, whereabouts of NBD image is sent along with TFTP image

Hyperbyte, so in other words the server address is hard-coded into the client image? could this be?
22:25dgroos_ has left IRC (dgroos_!~dgroos@vpn0-893.vpn.umn.edu, Read error: Connection reset by peer)

<Hyperbyte>
I said the info is sent along with the image.
22:26
TFTP/NBD server is configured in dhcpd.conf (DHCP server configuration), other configuration for the LTSP client is done via a TFTP config file
22:27
!lts.conf
22:27
<ltsp>
Hyperbyte: lts.conf: http://manpages.ubuntu.com/lts.conf
22:27
<DawnLight>
oh right
22:27
<Hyperbyte>
Of course some distros use NFS rather than NBD, but the principle is the same.
22:29
<DawnLight>
so the client fetches both the kernel + ramfs and the lts.conf from the server?
22:29
Hyperbyte, i'd really like to not ask you these basic questions
22:37
<Hyperbyte>
Then how else are you going to get this knowledge?
22:37
<DawnLight>
that's the million dollar
22:37
<Hyperbyte>
Well apparently you owe a million dollars then.
22:38
Because I've already answered that question.
22:38
ncd209:43 <Hyperbyte> I'm sure there are documents on it. There's a wiki with lots of technical info on sourceforge, as well as one on Ubuntu.
22:38
<DawnLight>
i looked in the wiki dude
22:39
<Hyperbyte>
I sincerely doubt that.
22:39
The information is even on en.wikipedia.org
22:39

Hyperbyte, this second dhcp request, i don't remember configuring
