<georgeneophytou>
hello, I have done some further testing of LTSP, I have noticed that clients cannot run snap based packages, for example, the calculator.
07:20
I believe it is something to do with mounted home directories, I have a similar system at the office where home directories are mounted over the network, snap packages are unable to run, now with LTSP, the same occurs
07:23georgeneophytou7 has joined IRC (georgeneophytou7!d91b21d5@217.27.33.213)
07:24
<meo>
I won't be surprised, since snap packages run in containers, which need special mount treatment
07:24
iirc the official guideline for ltsp19 is to uninstall snapd
07:24
<georgeneophytou7>
so is the solution here to install the gnome packages instead through apt and remove snap packages completely?
07:24
ah right
07:25
<meo>
I'm not sure if snap packages are impossible, just that afaik the proper support for them isn't implemented

<georgeneophytou7>
alright, is this something that is in the pipeline? alkisg?
07:26
<meo>
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
07:28
<georgeneophytou7>
hehe, alright, well it's not really a big deal since a workaround is easy I suppose, just thought I'd put it here
07:33
<alkisg>
georgeneophytou7: which ltsp version are you testing with? ltsp5 or ltsp19?
07:36
<georgeneophytou7>
ltsp 19.09
07:36
with ubuntu 18.04.3
07:36
<alkisg>
Strange, I don't know of any issues related to snap, except for the part where I recommend to remove it
07:37
I.e. if you blindly followed the installation instructions, snapd was removed, and you need to reinstall it
07:37
!install
07:37
<ltsp>
install: To install LTSP19+: https://github.com/ltsp/ltsp/wiki/installation. To install LTSP5: http://wiki.ltsp.org/wiki/Installation/Ubuntu for Ubuntu, or http://wiki.ltsp.org/wiki/Installation for other distributions
07:37
<georgeneophytou7>
so you are able to run snap packages on clients?
07:37
for me, when I open any snap package, it does nothing at all
07:38
<alkisg>
I don't remember if I tested, but I don't know of any issues
07:38
snap list, or what the command is, does that show anything?
07:38
<georgeneophytou7>
on client?
07:38
<alkisg>
Yes
07:39
<georgeneophytou7>
I will get back to you on that alkis, right now I am not at the office, it's okay if I DM you later?

10:31
<georgeneophytou>
okay one moment
10:51
<alkisg>
georgeneophytou: have you only tested with the same user on the server and the client?
10:51
<georgeneophytou>
I have tested with another user as well
10:51
user "gneophytou"
10:51
<alkisg>
In general logging in twice with the same user should be avoided; it can crash programs, cause corruption etc
10:51
<georgeneophytou>
neo has admin privelage, gneophytou is standard user
10:52
okay, shall I switch the user?
10:52
<alkisg>
No, as the user home is in /media
10:52os_a has joined IRC (os_a!~Thunderbi@195.112.116.22)
10:53
<alkisg>
Which will cause more issues, as this folder is reserved by udisks etc to mount sticks
10:53
<georgeneophytou>
I moved the home there as I will attach raid devices for user's /home
10:53
<alkisg>
OK this system seems messed up; let me try locally and see if snap works for me
10:53
<georgeneophytou>
okay
10:53
<alkisg>
I don't have snap currently, but I'll be able to test tomorrow
10:54
<georgeneophytou>
i can move the user /home back
10:54
just usermod -m -d /home/gneophytou gneophytou
10:54
and then we try with that user
10:54
<alkisg>
Sure, but there might be other changes
10:54
<georgeneophytou>
everything else on the system is standard, not changes were made
10:55
<alkisg>
You may use some other path for users, e.g. /home2, but better not /media, it's for another job,
10:56
also, I saw that /run/snapd is possibly in a local mount namespace or something, and I think that's to blame,
10:56
i.e. that snapd won't run properly over all overlayfs mount options; so it'll probably need more troubleshooting, if that's the issue
10:57
I'll give it a test later on
10:57
Let's disconnect for now
10:57
<georgeneophytou>
okay I see, do you need anything more from me then?
10:57
sure you can reconnect whenever you like
10:57
<alkisg>
No, we can disconnect
10:57
<georgeneophytou>
this machine is not in production right now
10:57
<alkisg>
OK; lunch time; bye for now

<alkisg>
georgeneophytou: I completely avoid snaps, as I don't like their goals and implementation; but afaik, there are snaps for the system (sudo snap xxx) and for the user (snap xxx)
12:57
If you installed snaps for the user only, and you were trying those, maybe that was the issue
12:57
E.g. sudo snap install vs snap install
12:58
<georgeneophytou>
these are the snaps that comes with ubuntu 18.04 as default, such as gnome-calculator
12:58
but to be honest, I agree with you and I can live without snaps :)
12:58
<alkisg>
OK
12:58
Yeah gnome-calculator should be available for all users
12:58
<georgeneophytou>
I just wonder if this would become a limitation to LTSP later on for other people wishing to use this software
12:59
<alkisg>
Nah
12:59
LTSP uses overlayfs like live cds
13:00
So it's just some mount option or something that snap doesn't like
13:00
I.e. it should be possible to run snaps; you just bumped into some unknown issue, not some limitation
13:01
I don't know if all users are affected or if it's just your installation
13:01
But even if all are affected, it should be solvable with a couple of lines of code changes

Hello everyone, thank you in advance for your help in solving the problem I will describe below.
14:33
There are two thinclients (TC1 and TC2) and two LTSP servers (SRV1 and SRV2). Thinclient TC1 can boot PXE and log in to LTSP on servers SRV1 and SRV2, but thinclient TC2 can boot PXE and log in to LTSP only on server SRV1, failing to download the image via TFTP from SRV2.
