<John__>
Hi, I have been trying to read up on the way forward for LTSP with Wayland being making headlines, but the only information I get is a log of negativity about Wayland meaning the end of LTSP (but these posts were made a few years ago)
07:33
What I cannot seem to understand is why no one sees the positive side of Wayland. Weston has had RPC in for a while now, why not change the client image to connect using rdesktop in stead of remote X? RPC is much faster than remote X.

<work_alkisg>
John__: remote desktop doesn't have good performance, so ltsp goes for fat clients mostly
08:18
!fatclients
08:18
<ltsp`>
fatclients: You may find some info about the Ubuntu/LTSP implementation of fat clients at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/FatClients
08:18
<work_alkisg>
!ltsp-pnp
08:18
<ltsp`>
ltsp-pnp: ltsp-pnp is an alternative (upstream) method to maintain LTSP installations for thin and fat clients that doesn't involve chroots: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/ltsp-pnp
08:18
<work_alkisg>
Other than that, wayland will probably provide something rdp or vnc-like for thin clients too
08:19
It will have less performance that X but that's minor, Xorg nowadays has a lot of issues over the network as well
08:19
*than X...
08:21
"RPC is much faster than remote X." ==> that's totally wrong btw, xvideo needs 12 bpp and stretches client-side, while rdp stretches the video server-side and needs 32 bpp

Thanks for the feedback. As for the comment on the difference in speed between remote X and RDP, I based that on my personal experience. I often work on Linux systems halfway around the globe and with ADSL speeds in South Africa not exactly on par with the first world, the difference in speed is not noticeable - remote X is not an option at all to do remote support over a slow line. RDP is manageable. I still hold my viewpoint that RDP

Interesting. Installed ltsp on ubuntu 14.04, none of the config files have data. sudo ltsp-build-client fails with se: command not found.
14:02
<ogra_>
what did you install exactly ?
14:02
<alkisg>
John__: LTSP doesn't really care about WAN connections, it's optimized for LAN. Xorg is much better than RDP for LAN.
14:02
For WAN connections, check x2go
14:04
<Cipher-0>
Installed ltsp-server-standalone per the instructions on https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/LTSPQuickInstall
14:05
<alkisg>
Cipher-0: fails with what? can you copy/paste both the command and the output?
14:05* alkisg doesn't think ltsp calls a "se" command anywhere...
14:06
<Cipher-0>
(as root)
14:06
ltsp-build-client
14:06
/etc/ltsp/ltsp-server.conf: line 1: se: command not found
14:06
<alkisg>
Ah, you already have a file there?
14:07
cat /etc/ltsp/ltsp-server.conf
14:07
That file isn't shipped by ltsp, you probably made it yourself, and have a syntax error there
14:07
<Cipher-0>
file exists, is empty.
14:07
<alkisg>
ls -lha /etc/ltsp
14:07
What's the output of that?
14:08
Better yet, use pastebin, and paste the output of `grep -r . /etc/ltsp`
14:08
!pastebin

ashgggggggsdfj. Back in a while. I see where there's a few different fuckups on my part.
14:12* alkisg tries to pronounce "ashgggggggsdfj", and fails... :P :D

14:48
<ogra_>
you are building for arm or powerpc ?
14:49
<Cipher-0>
Nope; wrong arch then?
14:49
<ogra_>
looks like
14:49* Cipher-0 grumps.
14:49
<ogra_>
i wonder how that happened
14:49
by default ltsp-build-client will use the host arch
14:49
did you fiddle with anything there ?
14:50
<Cipher-0>
Straight copy-pasta from https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/LTSPQuickInstall for config files... will go back in and check.
14:51
Arch = i686
14:51
Mmph.
14:52
<ogra_>
Cipher-0, where on that page do you see any config files mentioned
14:52
sudo apt-get install ltsp-server-standalone and sudo ltsp-build-client is all you need
14:53
<Cipher-0>
And when I did that install the config files were created but were all empty.
15:36* Cipher-0 burns down the VM and starts over.

closer and closer. Blew out the server, rebuilt, played, got it to load a PXEbooted client... somewhat. Now stuck exactly with the same issue as here: http://askubuntu.com/questions/451092/ltsp-client-image-load-hangs-on-ubuntu-14-04-lts

Cipher-0: is your LTSP server different from your DHCP server?
17:40
<Cipher-0>
[1] Done, retesting
17:40
[2] Nope, same box.
17:40
Also, using amd64 architecture.

sure, change out i386 for amd64 then :)
17:47
Cipher-0: so that should give a bit more output to the screen
