<lale>
Ok thanks: so my problem is: we would like to have a single "boot server" to load the img and the root fs, but after the boot process we want to make the login to a specific machine. it is possible?
11:05
<work_alkisg>
Yes, set LDM_SERVER=the login server ip
11:05
in lts.conf
11:05
!lts.conf
11:05
<ltsp`>
lts.conf: http://manpages.ubuntu.com/lts.conf
11:08
<lale>
so, in lts.cfg placed into /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386 i created a section with the mac address of the thin client i want to redirect and under this section i wrote LDM_SERVER=the login server ip. correct?
11:08
shoud i have to rebuild the image?
11:09
<work_alkisg>
Which distribution are you using, and which version?
11:09
Also, it's lts.conf, not lts.cfg
11:10
<lale>
i am using ubuntu 12.04 and yes, it is lts.conf
11:11
<work_alkisg>
OK, then you should be ready to try it.
11:12
Make sure that you have a desktop environment and an ssh server in your login server
11:15
<lale>
Thanks it seems working correctly! :)
11:26
now i have another question: can i stop nbd and tftp on the target host? probably i can stop tftp, but i am not sure about nbd
11:32
<work_alkisg>
The boot server needs to have nbd-server running. And that's the only place where nbd-server is needed.
11:33
TFTP is only needed while the client boots, for a few seconds.
11:52
<lale>
Thanks a lot again

Hello everyone. I'm setting up ubuntu 12.04.2 on some hardware running a gma3650 video chipset. This requires the gma500_gfx kernel module which is detected and auto setup when I run 12.04.2 off of a harddisk on the device. However if I run the device as a client to an LTSP server running 12.04.2 it will not detect/use the hardware.
15:50
Does anyone have any suggestions for me? I'm pretty stumped.

The correct kernel is being used, and the module exists for the device once I've logged in it just doesn't see the device in dmesg nor will use the module.

I thought so, I logged in on the client and looked in /lib/modules and it exists there.
15:56
However when I look at the server under /opt/ltsp/i386/lib/modules it doesn't exist.
15:57
and I was under the impression that is where the image is built from. Sorry I'm still trying to wrap my head around LTSP.
15:58

hm strange
15:58
ah
15:58
strike that
15:58

<workingcats>
(alternatively, chroot into the build root and run passwd, rebuild image, and reboot client)
15:59
check with lsmod if it loaded it, if not try to modprobe it
16:02
also, thin client or fat client?
16:02
because if its thin client then the /lib/modules you saw after login (assuming you meant a regular user login) was the /lib/modules of the server
16:03
<boom^time>
thin client
16:03
Okay so they are not a part of the image then.
16:04
<workingcats>
ah ok
16:04
i was hoping it was this, else i wouldnt know how to proceed hehe
16:05
okay so now just search for the command to find out which package owns a file in debian, run that on the module file on the server, chroot into the image, apt-get the package, exit the chroot, rebuild the image, done
16:06
<boom^time>
Sounds easy enough. Thanks a lot workingcats I'll let you know how it goes.

I chrooted into the image and updated the kernel and xorg-xserver to quantal. Then ran ltsp-update-kernels and updated the image. Now it's loading the kernel and the modules np but after login it hangs at the desktop and doesn't seem to want to load unity or anything.

I'm pretty sure unity is known to have lots of issues on thin clients, you'll probably need to use thick clients instead
17:22
ubuntu has been slowly ditching support for old hardware, couple more releases and you'll probably need to have 3d accelerated video drivers
17:22
direct render in and all, which mean no thin client
17:22
unless ltsp can implement pcoip or something

relevant, somewhat https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/1044436

I haven't tried newer versions yet, but my observations of the discussions here are that ubuntu unity is probably not going to be a viable option for ltsp going forward

I'm at my wit's end...how can I set my fat clients default session to Lubuntu? I have lts.conf set with "LDM_SESSION=/usr/bin/startlubuntu"
20:02
When users try to login, it throws "failed to load default session", but if they manually select their session as lubuntu, it works fine
20:08
<vagrantc>
i had a similar issue with xubuntu, well, technically a fork of xubuntu
20:09
jaredw: it's probably because one of the variables isn't set correctly...
20:09* vagrantc looks for a more specific answer
20:09
<jaredw>
:)
20:09
I thought maybe permissions, but no dice there that I can see
20:10
<vagrantc>
jaredw: on the server, i had to set up a file in /etc/X11/Xsession.d/60x11-force-session:
20:10
<jaredw>
hmm
20:10
<vagrantc>
test -z "$DESKTOP_SESSION" && export DESKTOP_SESSSION=lubuntu
20:10
or something like that
20:11
<jaredw>
k gimmie a sec
20:11
<vagrantc>
otherwise, it would only log in as xfce
20:11
and not apply the xubuntu tweaks
20:11
not sure if it's the same with lubuntu and lxde... but i suspect it might be
20:14
<jaredw>
you already had that file /etc/X11/Xsession.d/60x11-forec-session ?
20:14
<vagrantc>
no, i created it, actually use 60x10-force-session
20:15
<jaredw>
ok
20:15
<vagrantc>
might be better to do: test -n "$DESKTOP_SESSION" || export DESKTOP_SESSION=lubuntu
20:15
it's a little safer in case of error handling
20:16
jaredw: also, that presumes the .desktop file is named lubuntu.desktop ... haven't actually used lubuntu

<jaredw>
actually I think it's Lubuntu.desktop
20:17
<vagrantc>
then: export DESKTOP_SESSION=Lubuntu ... i think
20:17
tinker with it, hope it helps
20:18
<jaredw>
alright will do, thanks
20:18
My test client is what I'm using, so brb lol

vagrantc: Are there log files I should be looking at?
20:29
<vagrantc>
jaredw: /home/USERNAME/.xsession-errors might have something useful
20:29
but it often has alarming things of no real consequence, too
20:30
<jaredw>
heh, ok
20:31
it looks like if I modify /etc/X11/xsession, I can set the default path for userxsession to be somewhere other than the user's home folder
20:31
Perhaps set it some folder in the chroot?
20:33
<vagrantc>
well, /etc/X11/Xsession sources /etc/X11/Xsession.d/*, so generally better to create a snippet script in there
20:33
<jaredw>
alright
20:33
<vagrantc>
thin client or fat client?
20:33
<jaredw>
fat
20:34
<vagrantc>
ah, that's a little different then...
20:34
<jaredw>
oh?
20:34
Need to modify the chroot?
20:34
<vagrantc>
you'd need to edit /etc/X11/Xsession.d/ in the chroot
20:34
<jaredw>
ok
20:34
<vagrantc>
and update the image, and all that fun
20:35
<jaredw>
lemme try your original idea right quick
20:35
brb
20:35
<vagrantc>
i'm a bit distracted, and should probably focus elsewhere ... good luck!
20:35
<jaredw>
thanks :)
