I've a question: a wireles thin client, is it possible? any valid solution?
07:01dobber has joined #ltsp
07:04
<Appiah>
there are thin clients with wireless
07:05
if there are thin clients with wireless that can pxeboot I have no idea

<giaco>
:-/
07:10
<Appiah>
if you can turn them into fatclients perhaps?
07:10
(beacuse they dont pxeboot right?)
07:10
or am I confusing terms here
07:12
<sep>
Appiah, you will either need a external wifi to ethernet adapter that can connect to the wifi on the machines's behalf before it boots. or you must have a tiny tiny os on the machine that can detect the hardware and connect to the wifi, before coninusing the boot there. (or more likely just a thinclient distro like thinstation)
07:13
<giaco>
sep, I want the second solution
07:13
but I'd like to start from something that's supposed to work out-of-the-box
07:13
You're talking about thinclient distro, I'm relly interested
07:13
<sep>
http://www.thinstation.org/ works out of the box boot it from flash iso cd or whatever
07:14
<Appiah>
tiny os that detects the wifi ... wouldnt that be a fatclient setup?
07:14
<sep>
a fat thinclient :)
07:14
not a fat workstation
07:14
but basicaly yes
07:15
<Appiah>
:)

sorry I didn't know those terms :) now I do
07:15
<sep>
not sure if they are "authorative" i just thought they was descriptive :)
07:15
<giaco>
ok but what I need is pxe booting from this thinstation, do you think it's possible
07:15DaGeek_ has joined #ltsp
07:16
<Appiah>
I remeber seeing something about putting the ldm on the flash
07:16
<sep>
you can not pxeboot on wireless without some sort of code on the box.
07:16
<Appiah>
on the mailinglist
07:16
<sep>
not ltsp and not thinstation
07:16
if you boot thinstation on the box. you dont need to pxeboot it anymore
07:16
(or any other local code)
07:17
<giaco>
sep, I'd like to boot thinstation using CDROM, and than boot an edubuntu client from there .. do you thing it's possible?
07:18
<Appiah>
livecd with ldm?
07:18
(would be the same as a live on the small disk/flash memory on a thin client)
07:19
<sep>
giaco, you can just connect to the edubuntu desktop directly with thinstation
07:19
<giaco>
probably I'm just missing how ldm works, it's my first days on ltsp :P
07:20
<Appiah>
ldm is the login manager for ltsp
07:20dobber has quit IRC
07:20
<sep>
Appiah, now that sounds so usefull someone must have done it :)
07:20F-GT has joined #ltsp

<Appiah>
"ldm(1) starts an X server and presents the user with a login screen, similar to the gdm(1) login prompt."
07:20
<giaco>
but I think I should pass the ltsp server IP address somewhere in thinstation
07:20
<sep>
giaco, you must configure it yes
07:21
<giaco>
I'm going to burn it on cd .. let's see
07:22
<sep>
probably if you want ltsp spesifics that require ldm. like localapps or local devices you might want to use a livecd /small distro that have ldm available instead of thinstation
07:22
but for just the edubuntu desktop thinstation will work

07:25
<_UsUrPeR_>

07:26
<Appiah>
dobber: welcome back
07:26
<dobber>
yesterdays ubuntu update broke it
07:26

<giaco>
what kind of conf should I modify for ldm on thinstation? What I mean is, where's ldm conf file?
07:29
I just want to get comfortable with lstp stuff manual configuration, as edubuntu worked out of the box without customization
07:30
<Appiah>
the ltsp configurations are in lts.conf , but that file gets read before starting ldm I think

07:32
does ltsp-localapps come from edubuntu or is it just a boxed ltsp5 tool?
07:32
<Appiah>
ltsp5
07:32
<giaco>
ok
07:33
and which is the common way to install and run localapps on the clients?
07:34
so far I've chrooted into the thin client image folder /opt/.. and I've done "apt-get install firefox", than I've recreated the client compressed image, and I've rebooted the clients
07:34
<Appiah>
to install localapp you first chroot in , and do a apt-get install
07:34
<giaco>
I see that now ltsp-localapps firefox launches firefox, but for example flash stuff is extremely slow
07:34
<Appiah>
then you have localapp configuration in lts.conf and it should have a shortcut/menu (could be wrong here)
07:37
<giaco>
I don't see any menu .. btw I'm getting confused, please take a look at this lts.conf file example http://people.canonical.com/~ogra/bzr-archive/ltsp/dapper/client/getltscfg/lts.conf
07:37
and and this parameters file http://pkg-ltsp.alioth.debian.org/bzr/people-stratus/client/lts-parameters.txt
07:38
as you can see in one you have a LOCAL_APPS parameter
07:38
but not on the other
07:43
<dobber>
giaco, what are you trying to do ?
07:47
<giaco>
dobber, nevermind, I've just solved. I was trying to boot firefox locally to show smooth flash, but my ltsp-localapps was launching the remote one
07:47
now it's wokring
07:48
now I've to solve two more problems: 1) a client with nforce2 ethernet card not booting, 2) a way to boot a wireless client

hi, I had a debian based ltsp-rdeskop installation that worked fine except was unable to boot new hardware (thin clients with new lan nics). I've installed from scratch a ubuntu 10.04 based solution, but rdesktop works fine except Caps Lock that does not work (Win 2003)
08:41
I've googled around and seems to be an old problem, but I've not found a solution so far
08:41
any idea?
08:43
rdesktop/keymaps/common has an Caps_Lock 0×0 inhibit that I changed to "Caps_Lock 0x3a capslock”
08:43
in cherrot, but seems not to do any difference (I've only rebooted the thin client.. is it enough?)
08:50
i.e. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/rdesktop/+bug/494311
08:50
there are bugs of 2008 and 2009
09:02
<frederickjh>
I have a Ubuntu Lucid LTSP setup and I am trying to figure out how to set up a user (that logs into a client) as a teacher. Italc is working on the sever as teacher. Anyone know where I can find help on this? I have hunted all over the italc site and google like crazy.

<markit>
mmm seems work, just probably had to rebuild the NBD image
09:12
wondering why such a bug is so long time standing
09:12
frederickjh: I don't sorry, even if I'm interested in the answer also
09:13
(I've setup a ltsp solution for a school, but not yet installed italc)
09:13
frederickjh: what do you mean "as a teacher"? and what prevents the teacher (real person) to login with teacher username and password?
09:16
<frederickjh>
I have a Ubuntu Lucid LTSP system. It comes with iTALC installed. Logged in as the first user created (admin) on the server I can access the iTALC master interface as it was installed.
09:17
I am trying now with another admin user on a client to see what happens.
09:17
But I don't want all my teachers as admins.
09:18
I get a message there seems to be no iTALC services running on this computer.
