hi all
04:12
Anyone here tried Edubuntu 7.10 usb support for thin clients?
04:15
<stgraber>
it works fine
04:16
<sakhi__>
stgraber: on thin clients?
04:16
<stgraber>
yep
04:19
<sakhi__>
regardless of the type of clients you might be using?

I like the new distroof Edubuntu, but how would I know if all the clients can detect the usb?
04:22
distro I mean
04:26
stgraber: on the server I can detect the usb and see all its contents, but on the clients I cannot.
04:27
<stgraber>
here if I plug an USB stick in one of the client, it takes some secs then appear on the Desktop
04:27
are your users in the "fuse" group ?
04:28
<sakhi__>
nope
04:28
could that be the problem?
04:29
<stgraber>
yes

I just set up a new ed ltsp server with feisty 7.04 on a AMD64 arch
06:04
my test client is a i386 and it connects to the server
06:04
but it can't find the lts.conf file
06:05
I forgot what is it I need to do to build the clie
06:05
can anyone help?
06:05
In the server, I can see /opt/ltsp/AMD64 but there is no /opt/ltsp/i386/ directory
06:05
I remember seeing somewhere that when you have a AMD64 architecture, you can still run i386
06:05
clients, but I forgot what kind of settings I need to do

08:12
jvanrooyen: Quite possibly.

08:17
<jvanrooyen>
cliebow__: the reason I'm still using ver 4 is just because of a client
08:17
<sbalneav>
jvanrooyen: It's pretty clearly a hardware problem, I'd say. NETDEV WATCHDOG: eth0: transmit timed out indicates that the card isn't sending data.

you sure are impatient
09:31
if you want to view PDFs, go ahead and install Adobe Reader
09:31
there are other more lightweight PDF viewers, though
09:33
<Gadi>
sonjag: hey there
09:33
<sonjag>
^Migs^, oops, sorry to be impatient! Do you recommend another reader?
09:33
Gadi, Hi!
09:33
<Gadi>
you wont get automatic updates, as acrobat wouldnt be in the repository
09:34
but, how often does acrobat update anway?
09:34
er, anyway
09:35
sonjag: the default pdf viewer in ubuntu is evince
09:35
does a pretty good job all in all
09:36
only on rare occasion do you find pdfs that it wont open
09:37
<sonjag>
Gadi, I don't know how often it gets updated. The windows version only seems like once a year or so... I can live with that. I am pondering ^Migs^ comment on the lightweight... I've probably overloaded my network/LTSP servers so I don't want add more if I can help it.
09:38

Gadi, I am responding to a complaint ;) Here's the file... if you have a chance to look, I'd appreciate it. <http://quest.arc.nasa.gov/aero/wright/teachers/pdf/language/Newspaper_Article.pdf> When it opens, the text comes out white on white... if you highlight it, you can see the text is there. The dialog box says "Document Viewer" opens the file. Is that evince? If not, how can I try evince to see if it would work, then set it as default which apparently i
09:40
t isn't on my set up?
09:43
<Gadi>
sonjag: looks fine here w/ doc viewer
09:45
<sonjag>
Gadi, you see black text on white? Any idea why the text comes out white here? It's quite a few users who had this issue.
09:45
<^Migs^>
why would you need Adobe's Reader to view PDFs? Would there be any special cases in which the PDF must be viewed with Adobe Reader?
09:45
perhaps forms that are to be filled out and connected to a server?
09:46
I'm not even sure if you'd still need Adobe Reader for that. Probably a good idea, though.
09:46
<Gadi>
sonjag: according to the doc properties, there are 2 fonts that are not embedded: GillSans-Bold and GillSans
09:46* Gadi is trying on my laptop not a thin client...

perhaps its a fonts thing...

<^Migs^>
am I crazy for asking this, or is there a way to use laptops as thin clients and wirelessly have them boot of an LTSP server?
09:48
<Gadi>
^Migs^: yes, because pdf is not as much of a standard as you may think ;)
09:49
<cliebow__>
Gadi: all isee on moine is libtrackerclient...
09:49
<^Migs^>
I have a principal who is against having a computer lab in his school. He'd rather have a set of computers in each classroom then cart in laptops for the extra students
09:49
I think he's going to end up seeing the folly of his ways, but meh, he's not changing his mind
09:50
<Gadi>
^Migs^: no such thing as wireless PXE boot, so you either need to use a wireless bridge connected to the ethernet port or to a switch
09:50
<sonjag>
Gadi, I don't have GillSans on here. I am actually on the server... same issue as clients. I need to rtfm on fonts... I'm having printer issues because of them also.
09:50
<^Migs^>
so from the user's perspective, it IS possible, then?
09:50
hmmm
09:51
<Gadi>
sonjag: evidently, I dont either
09:51
it must substitute with sans
09:52
^Migs^: consider having a switch for multiple desks and make wireless islands
09:52
hand out the lappiess and have them plug into the switch
09:52
<^Migs^>
this is going to be a pain

alternatively, just install NXclient on them
09:53

09:53

I"m not even sure if these laptops will have PXE boot. Guess since they have their own hard drives they don't really need to
09:53
nxclient?
09:53
hang on, I'll look that up
09:54
<Gadi>
dpkg -l evince
09:54
oops
09:54
sonjag: Im on 2.20.0 version of evince
09:54
on gutsy
09:54
you can try installing "xpdf"
09:55
and see if the fonts come up in that
09:55
<sonjag>
^Migs^, If it helps, I can give you more info on how we've set up multiple "computer labs" around our school with thin clients.
09:55
^Migs^, We now have 5 classrooms with 1:1 computing using thin clients. Easier to maintain than laptops (IMHO) and the teachers and students love the constant access.
09:56
<^Migs^>
hmm, nxclient free edition only allows 2 users
09:56
<Gadi>
^Migs^: that is nxserver free edition
09:56
you can either use freenx

sonjag, I work for a school district. I'm familiar with how to set this all up. I'm helping a charter school get started on the side, though.

Gadi, I'm running evince 0.8.1 on ubuntu 7.04 (don't know all the animal names ;)

<^Migs^>
I'd have probably up to 80 connections at once
09:58
<Gadi>
sonjag: is there an update available?
09:59
<^Migs^>
there's a max of 450 students in the entire school. I can't see more than 80 using the LTSP server at once, though, laptops included
10:01
I think I like the wireless bridge idea. They won't be sitting in rows, but rather in groups all the time. That might make things easier.

O
10:04
I'm not sure I understand what nxclient would do
10:04
I'm trying to figure it out from the web site. Would it basically be the equivalent of rdesktop for a Win Term Server?
10:04
you'd still need to boot up the OS and everything first?
10:04cyberorg has joined #ltsp
10:07
<Gadi>
^Migs^: right. you wouldnt have to monkey with the laptops too much (if they already work) you can just install the client (they have for multiple OSs) and connect to the server
10:07
might just be easier for you than formatting them and such
10:07
you wont get the same performance as with LTSP, but it may make it easier
10:08
if you can do the bridge, go for that
10:10

10:15
<Guaraldo>
^Migs^: Hummm... XDMCP, but NX has client to Windows and is possible and safe to conect over the internet...
10:16
^Migs^: LTSP uses XDMCP...
10:16
<Gadi>
actually, LTSP 5 does not
10:16
LTSP <=4 used XDMCP
10:16
<Guaraldo>
Gadi: Right... LTSP4.2 still uses XDMCP...
10:17
Gadi: But is possible to configure LTSP5 to use XDMCP...
10:17
<^Migs^>
what does LTSP 5 use?
10:17
<Gadi>
LTSP 5 uses ssh+X
10:17

sutula, oh, really
11:40
sutula, how, I have tried it but not working,
11:40
sutula, how is that working, do you have done sth extra,
11:41
<sutula>
daya: vagrantc has done a lot of work in the past few months. Let me try to summarize what it took, and you can decide if you want to try.
11:41
<daya>
sutula, ok
11:42
<sutula>
First, you need a newer version of the ltsp-server package. See the bottom section of http://wiki.debian.org/LTSP/Howto
11:42
You don't need ltsp-server-standalone
11:43
(unless you're running that already)
11:43
...can substitute ltsp-server
11:43
There may be a sound package or two you have to install manually
11:44
<daya>
sutula, I have done it already
11:44
<sutula>
Start with /usr/share/doc/ltsp-server/README.Debian.sound

sutula, acutally I have done it earlier , before more than 1 month,
11:50
sutula, But I can't get,
11:50
sutula, have you got the sounds get played in debian etch in ltsp by configuring thru this part,
11:51
sutula, I am completly amazed what is goning to my system,
11:53
sutula, any idea ok , I wll repeat the step again,
11:54
sutula, but due to slow Internet connectivity Its takes a long time,
11:54
<sutula>
daya: I can't understand what you're trying to say, but if you don't have 5.0.31debian2~0.etch.1 version of ltsp-server and a new client chroot, you probably want to start from there.
11:57
<daya>
sutula, Do I need extra 5.0.31debian2~0.etch.1 version of ltsp server or I can get it by following the lower step of the wiki,
11:58
sutula, I mean can I follow the lower step of the wiki, in the fresh installed syste, (etch)
11:58
<sutula>
daya: Steps 2, 3, and 4 get you the new package; the bottom stuff is only for X configuration
11:59* sutula clarifies that he is talking only about the section starting with "If you want to use newer LTSP related packages (with ltspfs and pulseaudio sound):"
12:01
<daya>
sutula, ye I got it, sorry for verbose explanation and query
12:03
sutula, If you have successfully tested the sound, It must work on mine isn't it, I will test it again, and let you know

they are different beasts

dri = direct rendering

so direct rendering is impossible with LTSP?

right -but dont confuse that with glx

I'm trying to set a root password for a powerpc thin client env on a i386 server. I booted a powerpc livecd and mounted /opt/ltsp, and then sudo chroot /opt/ltsp/powerpc. The mount is rw. Changing password results in Authentication token lock busy. Any ideas?

<warren>
wow... apparently F9 will be able to resize ext3, vfat and ntfs partitions in the installer
15:54* warren never thought he would live to see features that Mandrake had years ago.
15:55
<sutula>
outofrange: I've always done it on the server
15:55
outofrange: sudo chroot /opt/ltsp/i386
15:55
passwd root
15:55
<outofrange>
Doesn't seem like I could chroot to powerpc chroot on an i386 machine.
15:55
<sutula>
outofrange: Ahhh...good point
15:56
outofrange: Is the passwd actually kept in /etc/passwd or shadow?
15:56
<outofrange>
I assume in shadow.
15:57
Maybe I could create it in i386 and just copy shadow.
15:57
<sutula>
outofrange: Can you set it on the server and then copy it to the chroot's shadow?
15:57
<outofrange>
;)
15:57
<sutula>
outofrange: You'd probably onlyt have to copy the passwd text, not the whole file
15:58
<outofrange>
Yes -- I can just copy my existing password for that matter.
15:58
I'll give that a try.
15:58
Man this stuff eats time.

Now I need to try and debug why X isn't starting. Once I log in how would I run ldm like the startup scripts do?
