after upgrading our client side to a newer version (gentoo), and hard-copying all ltsp related files (since the gentoo ebuild is somewhat outdated and has weird dependencies that I don't want), LDM_USERNAME is no longer set, making ltsp-localappsd no longer start... does anyone have a hint what might be the reason? Maybe a new LDM version or something like that caused a small change
07:40Da-Geek has joined IRC (Da-Geek!~Da-Geek@88.98.213.152)
07:44
<alkisg>
fiesh: LDM_USERNAME isn't related to ltsp-localappsd
07:44
Are other lts.conf parameters set?
07:44
Is your lts.conf being parsed?
07:45
<fiesh>
if [ -n "${LDM_USERNAME}" -a -n "$(/usr/bin/id ${LDM_USERNAME})" ]; then
07:45

07:45

07:45

07:45
<alkisg>
Ah sorry my bad,
07:45
<fiesh>
fi
07:46
that's the message I'm getting from ltsp-localappsd
07:46
<alkisg>
I thought you meant that you were setting that in lts.conf
07:46
Like, for autologin etc
07:46
<fiesh>
oh, I see, no, no autologin for us :)
07:46
<alkisg>
So you can login but you don't have LDM_USERNAME set?!
07:47
<fiesh>
oh wait, actually, I'm being stupid -- when I ssh to the working version, there's also no environment variable LDM_USERNAME
07:47
so obviously I cannot start ltsp-localappsd via ssh to test it, but that doesn't work with the working version either
07:48
so the problem must most likely lie elsewhere
07:48
<alkisg>
You're not supposed to manually start localappsd
07:48
<fiesh>
yeah I wanted to to see why it doesn't start automatically any more
07:48
and that didn't work, and I thought LDM_USERNAME was the reason -- but it's not
07:49
<alkisg>
Do you have /usr/share/ldm/rc.d/X51-localapps ?

Hello alkisg :-)
07:55
<fiesh>
alkisg: yes, unchanged between the two versions
07:56
is there a way to log why ltsp-localappsd isn't starting up?
07:57
<alkisg>
Hi Hyperbyte, how are you?
07:57
fiesh: sure, just put a (commands ) 2>/tmp/log there
07:57
Or a "set -x; exec 2 >>/tmp/ltsp-log"
08:01
<Hyperbyte>
alkisg, I'm good! :-)

<fiesh>
ok, I was too quick with the setup, opengl stopped working :/
12:35
GLXBadContext
12:37
<alkisg>
opengl with thin clients or with fats?
12:37
<fiesh>
hmm I guess it's this weird bug that keeps persisting, which leads /etc/group to being unmounted, and then the users lose their priviliges
12:37
thin opengl 1
12:38
<alkisg>
Thins are expected to have non working opengl :D
12:38
Unless you mean localapps or virtualgl etc...
12:38
<fiesh>
but I think it's the /etc/group bug that was annoying me before, I hoped it would go away, seems it got more persitent
12:38
no no, I mean remote opengl 1, it works very well, I have told you before ;)
12:38
<alkisg>
What bug is that?
12:38
<fiesh>
we actually develop software using it
12:38
<alkisg>
Yeah it only works by mistake, as the xorg devs said
12:39
And only in very specific and old combinations...
12:39
<fiesh>
the tmpfs mounted over /etc/group for some reason vanishes, the mount that is
12:39
and users lose the privileges
12:39
yeah, but we need it ;)
12:39
<alkisg>
Is that still using bind-mounts?
12:40
Or normal overlayfs?
12:40
<fiesh>
hmm it looks like this tmpfs on /etc/conf.d type tmpfs (rw,relatime,mode=755)
12:40
how do I tell?
12:40
<alkisg>
What's the output of `cat /proc/mounts | nc termbin.com 9999`
12:41
<fiesh>
hah didn't know termbin, that's neat
12:41
http://termbin.com/ctze
12:42
<alkisg>
Ouch yeah that's the old bind-mounts method
12:42
Has been removed from ltsp since ages
12:42
But knipwim couldn't make normal overlayfs work on gentoo
12:42
But overlayfs has been upstream in the kernel for ages too now, so it should work fine
12:42
I.e., you guys need an ltsp maintainer that will update the gentoo ltsp code
12:43
...and actually remove some gentoo specific bits and use the normal ones
12:43
<fiesh>
heh that would be ideal
12:43
BUT for some reason this only seems to happen to /etc/group
12:43
<alkisg>
I think you would be the only candidate for that, though :)
12:44
<fiesh>
I suspect something writing to it or so
12:44
<alkisg>
Could be, but really not interested in troubleshooting bind-mounts, it's been removed from upstream
12:44
<fiesh>
hah yes, that is the sad part, and looking at my gitlab, I have a long long list of tickets already :(
12:44
no that's understandable
12:52
ok, I guess the opengl issue is not related to permissions, fixing them didn't help :/
12:53
it's also said more and more software is dropping support for thin clients, chromium never worked here at all, and firefox has become unusable in its default settings, one has to enable xrender again manually
12:53
and they say it's intended behavior, so sooner or later, it won't work on a remote X connection any more
12:53
then wayland comes, making things even worse

I see, the default for option iglx changed from xorg 1.16 to 1.17 from + to -
13:06
is there a designated config file in which to set X server options in ltsp?

<mmetzger>
Hitting a problem where some init-premount scripts (that rely on data from /dev/random) won't run properly until the "random: nonblocking pool is initialized" message comes through.
18:54
Guessing the best way to handle this is some sort of PREREQ entry, but wasn't sure if there's a better way.
18:55
This may also be a red herring as I'm testing in a VM for now which may be artificially slowing everything down
18:56
<alkisg>
mmetzger: is this related to ltsp?
18:59
<mmetzger>
alkisg: In effect, yes, but honestly only because I'm testing in an LTSP environment
19:00
alkisg: This would be the same under a normal linux install, so no need to waste cycles - sorry about that.
19:01
<alkisg>
Right, if it's not related to the ltsp code then it's not really related to ltsp...

<vagrantc>
mmetzger: does it need true randomness? could you just use /dev/urandom?
20:11
<mmetzger>
vagrantc: In theory I could, but the app I'm using is expecting /dev/random internally.
20:18
<alkisg>
Maybe you could sed random/urandom in the app's code from an init-top script ;)
20:21
<mmetzger>
alkisg: Heh... I almost want to do that just to say I did.
20:22
<alkisg>
if it's binary, you need to keep the same string len
20:23
<mmetzger>
Amusingly I haven't found my exact problem elsewhere but there are mentions at various places of don't rely on /dev/random at boot due to this hanging issue.
20:23
I thought it'd be fun to symlink random to urandom.
20:23
<quinox>
udev should be able to do that easily
20:26
or use LD_PRELOAD, then you won't have to break the rest of the system
20:30
<mmetzger>
quinox: Thanks - I do have another way around it where I can directly use /dev/urandom - just sometimes amuse myself breaking the system
20:33
Ok, symlinking random to urandom works frighteningly well.
20:44
alkisg, vagrantc, quinox: Thanks for the assistance
20:44
<alkisg>
np, didn't do anything :)
20:45
<mmetzger>
alkisg: The tip / reminder yesterday regarding the break=X entry was invaluable. Would've fought way too long with this otherwise.
