<gbaman>
alkisg: I found the cause of that 30 second pause on bootup
12:50
<alkisg>
dns? fstab? net?
12:50
<gbaman>
traced it through LTSP config files (using a lot of echos)
12:51
tftp-hpa
12:51
which apparently does not autostart
12:51
<alkisg>
...erm what?
12:51
tftp or tftpd?
12:51
<gbaman>
*tftpd-hpa
12:51
<alkisg>
On the server?
12:52
<gbaman>
yes
12:52
in 05-getltsconffile
12:52
<alkisg>
Ah, you're using local kernel and initrd
12:52
<gbaman>
yes
12:52
<alkisg>
That's why noone saw/expected the timeout there
12:52
<gbaman>
it is after it starts the scripts in /usr/share/ltsp/init-ltsp.d/
12:53
tftp "$SERVER" -c get ${pathonly:-/ltsp/i386/}lts.conf $lts_conf_temp >/dev/null
12:53
that line
12:54
pathonly?
12:55
<alkisg>
Yeah it's part of the code, a variable, ignore it
12:55
<gbaman>
does that line only work if using i386?
12:55
<alkisg>
So ltsp is fine and your server had a setup issue, and tftpd-hpa has a bug that many people +1'ed but is not solved yet
12:56
No it works without i386 as well
12:56
<gbaman>
is that what pathonly is for?
12:56
<alkisg>
Sorry, really no time to explain the code
12:56
<gbaman>
ok
12:56
<alkisg>
Yes, that's what it's for though
12:56
<gbaman>
why though is there 2 tftp folders?
12:57
<alkisg>
Ask vagrantc, he's the debian maintainer
12:57
Although tftp is not really ltsp...
12:57
<gbaman>
they both contain the boot files
12:57
but this one does not contain an lts.conf
12:57
<alkisg>
Right, ltsp does the right thing there
12:57
It populates all of your tftp dirs
12:57
<gbaman>
where as the normal one in /var does
12:58
<alkisg>
About how they were created, ask vagrantc
12:58
<gbaman>
ok, will do
12:58
is working nicely now though, https://github.com/gbaman/RaspberryPi-LTSP/commit/c53db39218d7ff7788c06da1adcbbd56609c386f
12:59
just added a script to restart tftpd-hpa

<stevecook>
Hello folks. My name is Steve Cook. I am currently running Xubuntu 64bit with the XFCE desktop on a pentium D. Previously I was running Ubuntu 12.04 32 bit with a gnome desktop on this machine. On the old Ubuntu/Gnome setup, I sucessfully set up and ran an LTSP server by following the instruction in this website - http://www.thefanclub.co.za/how-to/how-create-ubuntu-1104-x64-ltsp-server-32bit-thin-clients .
14:34
more text following...
14:36
However, when I follow thos instructions on my new xubuntu setup, they don't work. It all sems to be going ok until I try and restart the server, at which point is gives me a "fail". I have a feeling it may have sometbhing to do with various settings fuiles not being located in the correct folders, but i am really not sure as I am not very technicaslly expert in this. any help and advice gratefully accepted
14:40
Oh, bugger...I've just found out I've got to go out for an hour! I will leave this channel open on my desktop while I'm gone and hopefully someone will have read my message and may be able to leave some advice for when I get back. If so, thanks in advance.

Nobody?
15:50* alkisg prefers the documentation from official sources....

15:52
<alkisg>
Hehe
15:52
It seems that the person who wrote it did a good job... but it should be in a more official place...
15:53
We do need people to document things...

This is the sum total extent of the official documentation (from the link at the top of thus page) with regards to setting the network up prior to installing the server and image - ("Configure your spare interface for the thin clients to have the IP 192.168.0.1 (and make sure it is up and running"). The reason I used that other site is becasue it goes into far more useful detail in how to set up the network.
15:56
If you know of other official documentation tbhat goes into as much opr more detail with regards to network setting up prior to installation of the ltsp server, i would be grateful if you could sghare it with me
15:57
<gbaman>
stevecook: are you using a separate router with DHCP etc on it?
15:59
<alkisg>
stevecook: what I was suggesting, was that that person that wrote the how-to, should instead come here, offer to write that in some official wiki, so then devs would read it and comment on it. Now, we can't have read any website everywhere and comment if it still works...
16:01
E.g. it proposes there to both use network manager *and* /etc/network/interfaces, which isn't right..
16:04
<stevecook>
At the moment, the totality of my network equipment includes: A wirleess network router for te internet from the server. At the monent I am not using a wired router for ltsp as there is just the one client and so it is a cable direct from server to thin client. Additiionally, I have previously set up a Virtualbox machine client for testing purposes.
16:05
It worked before from that instructional, though I am more than happy to concedce it may be less than perfect as an instructional.
16:06
<alkisg>
About the network setup, check the ubuntultsp wiki, it has many pages, with screenshots etc
16:07
<stevecook>
In termsof what my various confoguration files for both the network and ltsp are concerned, they are exactly the same as that instructional, as this is how I did it when i have ububnut installed and so simply did precisely the same.
16:07

16:07
<gbaman>
wait, stevecook so what isnt working?
16:10
<stevecook>
The manaual setting up of the eth0 card appears, on the face of it to have workld as my conkly is recognising it's presence and address. (or , at least was, i have just re-ghosted a fresh xubuntu without the ltsp). The ltsp server install without any apparent errors being logged. Where it become apprent something has not worked is whebn i try to restrat the server for the first time and I get a "fai" flag in red coming up on the tem
16:11
<gbaman>
what is failing?
16:11
<stevecook>
the server is failing to start
16:11
<gbaman>
the entire ubuntu server or the LTSP portion?
16:11
<stevecook>
the ltsp server
16:11
I think
16:12
I'll reinstall ther same as i did before and will try and restart the ltsp server as before and will post the rrror message up here. will take about ten mins
16:12
meanwhile, thanks for taking the time folks

you should never edit /etc/default, that disables the

16:35
<alkisg>
ogra means, don't change INTERFACES="" to "eth0".
16:35
<ogramobile>
right
16:35
<stevecook>
okay will go back and put it back to ""
16:37
<ogramobile>
then make sure to have one interface that is in the range you defined in dhcpd.conf, it will pick that one automatically
16:38
and run a config test on startup that tells you whats wrong (if anything)
16:39
<stevecook>
I've put it back to "", but still failing when i try and start ltsp. Ogramobile, I am not understanding how my eth interface is in the range I defined in dhcpd.conf. could you explain how i do that please

you can type better than me and I've got a full keyboard:)#

what ip range does your dhcpd.conf cover ?

put your dhcpd.conf to pastebin

is eth0 even up ?
16:56
<stevecook>
I have no expertise in the area oragmobile and so have simply followed a set of instructions that worked before. Suffice to say, I am unable to answer you question. not good , I know, but there it is
16:57
<ogramobile>
well, check with ifconfig if eth0 is up at all
16:57
<stevecook>
will do
17:00
please see contents of ifconfig command output here: http://pastebin.com/Ra5Va9i1
17:02
<ogramobile>
well, as you can see, eth0 is nit having an ip address
17:03
<stevecook>
how do I fix this please Ogramobile?
17:03
<ogramobile>
revert your hackery of the network manager config and drop the wrong gateway from /etc/network/interfaces
17:04
the: sudo ifup eth0
17:04
*then
17:06
<stevecook>
Could you explain how I revert my hackery of the network manager and drop the wrong gateway from /etc/network/interfaces. Edit to add: I've just seen your last post appear while i was typing. Are you saying I should execute the command "sudo ifup eth0"?
17:07
or change that value in one of my config files?
17:08
<ogramobile>
well, revert the NetwirkManager.conf file to how it wad
17:08
was before you edited it
17:08
<stevecook>
in which case, change it to what? Or simply delete the offending entry?
17:08
<ogramobile>
for the gateway, yes
17:08
just delete the line
17:08
<stevecook>
Will do, will come back in a min
17:14
Ogramobile, I've just taken a look though all my various config files and can find no line or entry in any of them that matches "sudo ifup eth0". Can you explain precisely where i am looking for it
17:15
<ogramobile>
that is the comnand you should run after you have
17:15
fixed the files
17:16
<stevecook>
ah right, thanks. I still don't know how to fix the files though
17:16
<ogramobile>
read the backlog again ;) i told you above
17:18* ogramobile needs to go to the grocery store before it closes ... back latet
17:18
<stevecook>
"revert your hackery of the network manager config and drop the wrong gateway from /etc/network/interfaces" is insufficient information Oragmobile
17:27
I've taken a look at the network nager.conf and the only value I changed in that was "managed=false" to "managed=true". all other entries in there are exactly as they were before I edited it. Which part do you want me to delete.
