<Da-Geek>
hey Hyperbyte, looks like Warren wants to kill LTSP in RHEL/Fedora
03:41
Hyperbyte, /me guesses you saw the E-mails to the lists about it a few days ago
03:43
<alkisg>
I once read in his blog that he was thinking of another way to implement netbooted clients
03:43
<Hyperbyte>
I'm not subscribed to the lists
03:43
<alkisg>
Did he say anything new about that?
03:43
<Hyperbyte>
Why does he want to kill LTSP?
03:44* Hyperbyte is worried now.
03:45
<Hyperbyte>
Where is this list?
03:51
<Da-Geek>
alkisg, https://www.redhat.com/archives/k12osn/2011-May/thread.html and look @ the thread 'Plans for K12Linux EL6 and Future Fedora'
03:52
Hyperbyte, alkisg some good points made by all i think...
03:52
<alkisg>
Thanks for the link, reading...
03:56
Hmmm ok I can understand why he won't be working on LTSP anymore, but I cannot understand why he won't let you work on it
03:57
Remote X will be working for a lot more years, and if nbd modules are not available for fedora, nfs is still there
03:57
Also flash on spice is much worse than with remote x
04:01
Also, speaking about fat clients, he says "However, this approach has always been a good idea. Yet oddly enough, nobody did it."
04:01
==> it shows that he's been out of touch with LTSP, as that's already implemented
04:04
<Hyperbyte>
Okay before I'm gonna pass judgement
04:04
I have some questions.
04:04
1. The i386 argument seems valid. But is LTSP i386? Can't you build a client with any architecture you want?
04:05
I thought you could do ltsp-build-client x86_64 if you wanted, or am I missing something here?
04:05
<alkisg>
If fedora repositories don't have kernels for i386, where would ltsp-build-client find them?
04:06
If they're 686+, then old clients won't work
04:06
(very old though - many clients from 1997+ would work, some not)
04:06
<Hyperbyte>
So? Why do we care?
04:07
See, I don't get that. Fedora is constantly pushing and promoting that it is using latest technlogy and stuff, features first...
04:07
<alkisg>
There are some thin client hardware that are not 686 compatible
04:07
<Hyperbyte>
And yet it needs to support hardware that should've been thrown away now...
04:07
Do official LTSP clients from DLWS != i386?
04:08
<alkisg>
I don't know, but I there there were some
04:08
i386, not i686
04:08
<Hyperbyte>
:\
04:08
Okay. So what's the problem with remote X?
04:09
If it's so bad, why does LTSP still rely on it?
04:10
I assume there's no alternative that can support localapps they way LTSP does it?
04:11
<alkisg>
He reports that remote X is untested, but I haven't heard of specific problems with remote X in any distro. Maybe he means "untested in fedora"....
04:11
LTSP supports thin clients, localapps, and fat clients
04:11
There are other solutions too for thin + fat clients
04:11
I haven't heard of other solutions that use localapps the way ltsp does
04:11
<Hyperbyte>
But not localapps, correct?
04:12
Yeah... that's what I was most impressed with.
04:12* alkisg doesn't use localapps at all
04:12
<Hyperbyte>
I do... for our softphones.
04:12
<alkisg>
I only use thin for clients < 500 RAM, or fat otherwise
04:13
<Hyperbyte>
If I run the softphones on the terminal server I get latency problems in the audio
04:13
<alkisg>
Agreed
04:14
<Hyperbyte>
Well, I have quite powerful thin clients... right now I use recycled Windows desktop PC's for netboot, but I have some LTSP Term 1720 on backorder.
04:14
Or rather 'on order' I think? I mean they're not delivered yet, anyways.
04:14
But I prefer doing everything on the server. Centralized, I like.
04:15
Anyway, Da-Geek... what do you think about this?

Hi all: I recently ran into an interesting problem on my ltsp box. ltsp server is ubuntu 9.10. My dhcp is pfsense. I recently added 2 NTP servers to pfsense's dhcp config, and my thin clients stopped booting with a udhcpcd error for unkown option "<ip_of_second_ntp_server>". I removed the second NTP server, and it started working again.

<gothaggis>
hello, what are the proper steps to install a Thunderbird extension for all users (Thunderbird is running as a local app). I ran Thunderbird on the LTSP server then updated the image, but the extension doesn't show up for other users.
13:30
<vagrantc>
you'll need to install the extension in the chroot ...
13:30
<gothaggis>
doh
13:31
<vagrantc>
if you're really running it as a local app
13:33
<gothaggis>
hmm
13:33
how does one run thunderbird in the chroot? if i chroot to /opt/ltsp/amd64 and then run /usr/bin/thunderbird it can't open the display
13:34
or maybe i need to run from the server directly instead of ssh ;)
13:35
<vagrantc>
you need to run thunderbird in order for the extension to register?
13:35
you can't just install it?
13:36
<abeehc>
my method to this point is to install the extension in my own tbird, then copy the resulting folders to the system level extension dir for tbird
13:36
which appears to be /usr/lib/thunderbird/extensions, chroot or otherwise
13:37* vagrantc just apt-get install xul-ext-FOOBAR
13:41
<abeehc>
interesting.. appears to be a smalllll subset though; and mostly focused on ff
13:41
<gothaggis>
thx
13:41
<abeehc>
have to study those pkgs though could be very useful in future
13:55
<gothaggis>
installing and then coping the folders over worked great, thankx again
