Hi Guys... if anyone here that was helping me 9 hours ago - it's WORKING NOW!!! thanks - I have a server-thin client working , and the problem was so stupid, as expected
next issue: is how to manage it. Let me know if there is a document with recommendations for accounts management, setup, how do I monitor the useresm etc
what did you figure out?
the problem was:
yigal, if you find such a document, please let me know lol
I chose wrong entry from ROMATIC to the NIC. Now I used another computer which can netwrok boot
|00:26||subir has quit IRC|
yigal: edubuntu has thin client manager included
And setting up accounts is done from System -> Administration -> Users and Groups
There's plenty of documentation included
System -> Help and Support

I noticed there is a "control package" in Edubuntu, which shows the clients connected and deliver ability to control it. Any idea how to install it in Ubuntu?
it is just a package like any other
i guess, but what is the name of that package?

Nvidia drivers on thin client, anyone?
Ummm, care to elaborate on that question somewhat? :)
|09:33||vagrantc has joined #ltsp|
Are you wondering if they work? Having trouble installing them? etc.
You still in EU?
Cool. Oh, right, it's DEBCONF time isn't it?
been rocking it out at the debconf, yeah
sbalneav: newer version of ltspfs in debian unstable than in ubuntu, even :)
sbalneav: and a new ltsp upload to debian ...
Did you touch up ldm to reflect the move to /var/run/ldm_socket?
I must have forseen the move away from /etc/fstab, there was nothing to moving it to /var/run/ltspfs_fstab
also uploaded to debian-edu
don't know how to install them
sbalneav: haven't incorporated the crazy stuff that ogra's been doing in ubuntu with nbd and squashfs... but we should definitely test it.
sbalneav: actually, we should try your greeter, too
all the debian LTSP crew is here
Lossie: Well, you may not need them. Have you tried the "nv" driver already in X?
sbalneav: or, your ldm
|09:41||Q-FUNK has joined #ltsp|
vagrantc: heh, mine's pretty rough yet. Lets wait a month :)
sbalneav: you're one of those lone wolf coders :P
it is not that x isn't working but aren't the nvidia drivers better
Lossie: Sure, for 3D performance. But that's not going to work too well in LTSP anyway :)
vagrantc: heh, no, I'd love people to look at the source.
But once it becomes a Debian package, isn't it supposed to be finished? :)
sbalneav: well, there is "experimental"
I'm sitting here looking at adding an rc.d feature.
sbalneav: it would make it easier to get feedback
sbalneav, it should ;-)
Lossie: Nah, it shouldn't. Thin clients aren't for 3d work.
vagrantc: sure, package it up.
just expect to do a lot of RE packaging on it in the next few weeks :)
sbalneav: that's what experiemental is for :)
True, but berryl would make it nice dough
sbalneav: as long as it's not "break your system" kind of code, it should be fine if it kind of works
Some people may like it, however, beryl/compiz etc are, IMHO the BIGGEST wastes of time ever.
vagrantc: Shouldn't break anything.
other question: Any help on speading up ldm
is there any progress?
3d's a problem in a thin client environment, because all those drawing instructions have to go over the wire.
on its development
I'm working on it right now.
sbalneav: you got a bzr branch to play with ?
ldm2's in the ldm2-0.1, and the greeter's in the ldmgtkgreet-0.1 dir.
sbalneav: would be better to just kill the old directories and files, i think ...
ah well, i guess we can do that when it's ready
yeah, that was my thought
I'm still a little hazy on packaging, so I wasn't sure how to make it so it built all the packages. So I just left them as unconnected directories.
I'm considering it a major coup d'etat that I'm actually comfortable using bzr now :)
you'r coding ldm ?
link is a 404 btw
I didn't code the python one, although I did contribute some patches.
Lossie: it's a bzr URL
Lossie: bzr get URL
I'm recoding a new one in C
Lossie: not a browseable URL
http://code..launchpad.net/~sbalneav/ltsp/scotts-gutsy if you want to take a look
ah c, when you love performance
can i compile and try it, or wouldn't it do much yet?
It's not packaged yet, so you'd have to manually compile it, the greeter, and manually install it.
within the chroot
can't be that difficult, does it need certain dependencies?

ok, kids are haranguing me to make breakfast.
Why *I* need to do that on fathers' day is beyond me.... :)

hi sbalneav, cliebow, burgundavia and the others that supported me. I just popped to say THANKS. My server is working, I run 3 clients, booting from PXE and floppy. I also summarized the flow I went through in Ubuntu forum.
yet I have one last question: can I install again the network manager, removed by mistake? can it damage the "2 NICs system"?
Shouldn't damage it
servers and community. I had a typo in the subject, so its called: "thic lient" .....
