I'm having trouble finding the kernel source for 2.4.26-ltsp-2. I absoluately cannot change this ancient version but need to compile fuse against it. Is there a version archive I can get the tarball from?
04:21sepsky has quit IRC
04:26
<Appiah>
what dist tekgnosis ?
04:26
would be wise to search in their archives
04:27ogra has joined #ltsp
04:27
<laga>
problem might be that older LTSP file systems were just cobbled together from various distros AFAIK
04:27
before project muecow came

04:31
<tekgnosis>
red hat 3 I think.
04:32lucascoala_ has quit IRC
04:32
<laga>
so, if you had the .config, you might try a vanilla 2.4.26 tarball and hope it doesnt need patches..
04:33
but of course, the real thing would be preffered
04:33
<tekgnosis>
ok, I thought older versions started with a core package from ltsp project or something. I figured the %version%-ltsp-2 implied custom kernel patches. I tried stealing the fuse.o from a 2.4.26 DSL cd but it no likey. I don't have anything but the end compiled environment.
04:34
sorry to be a n00b; but would the .config be found in the /opt/ltsp/i386 tree or is it part of the kernel source? really, I'm new to hacking at kernel modules, normally I just USE linux. :P
04:36
<laga>
so, it looks like 2.4.26-ltsp-2 was used in ltsp 4.1
04:37
tekgnosis: http://wiki.ltsp.org/twiki/bin/view/Ltsp/LTSP-42#Building_LBE - check this out.

hum
04:38
<tekgnosis>
hey, I didn't find those before; this is good :)
04:38
<laga>
can't find any mention of 2.4.26 on that website, though
04:38
so it might indeed be a newer kernel
04:40
<tekgnosis>
Alright, well this looks to be what the ltsp has by way of docs, so I'll look through this and also search rhel3 archives and maybe try compiling against vanilla 2.4.26 for giggles. Something will work.
04:40
Thanks!
04:43
<laga>
tekgnosis: http://wiki.ltsp.org/twiki/bin/view/Ltsp/LBE#Installing_and_Building_LBE - use CVS to download the latest and greatest LBE. then cd kernel-src/
04:43
you owe me a cold one ;)
04:44
<tekgnosis>
I do, in fact, owe you a 6-pack.
04:44
This is the reason I keep my copy of leafchat after all these years... :P
04:44
<laga>
;)
04:45
you probably do not want to use the LBE itself to build the kernel, just grab the source for the vanilla kernel, patch it, apply config, add your module and build
04:46
make sure you modify EXTRA_VERSION to ltsp-2.. package.def might also be interesting to look at
04:48vvinet has joined #ltsp
04:51
<tekgnosis>
hrm, that's also good info. Reall, I"m not sure how to patch a vanilla kernel with the LBE stuff, but I'm guessing that will be at least hinted at in the docs. Thanks for the hand-holding thus far, it's appreciated. I'll figure out from there. :D

i have a pretty old compaq computer (pIII with 256 MB ram) that i want to use as a thin client.. problem is that the bios is dated before 2000 (which is the cutoff for acpi support), so it tells me to use acpi=force.. i've tried that, but it still reports the same error.. the only difference is that the loudspeakers are jolted to their peak levels when i use acpi=force.. what can i do?
07:37
<nubae>
try noapic nolapic
07:38
<zamba>
nubae: what will happen with the clients that has recent bioses then?
07:38
noacpi, yeah?
07:38
or did you actually mean noapic?
07:38
<nubae>
noapic
07:39
<zamba>
in addition to acpi=force?
07:39
<nubae>
that should come after the kernel paramaters
07:39
so edit pxe.0.cfg/default or whatever its called
07:39
<zamba>
DEFAULT vmlinuz ro initrd=initrd.img quiet splash noapic nolapic
07:39
like so?
07:39
<nubae>
under the tftpboot dir
07:39
right
07:39

let's try

hi
09:03
i'm just testing my working installation of ltsp with new thin client: samsung 713NT
09:05
it's boot goes correctly until LTSP starts, after that i have just last 2 log messages on tty1 and only blinking cursor on other ttys
09:06
if i append init=/bin/bash kernel parameter, it boots ok, i don't see anything wrong...
09:07
another clients work perfectly... any ideas please?
09:07
<sbalneav>
wigwam: We'd need to know a bit more to help you. What version of ltsp on what host? How much ram in the thin client, and what kind of video chipset is in the thin client.
09:08
<wigwam>
Ubuntu 8.04 - LTSP 5
09:09
<sbalneav>
And the ram and video chipset in the thin client?
09:10
<wigwam>

128 MB RAM and AMD Geode LX video
09:14
but if i configure lts.conf with just SCREEN_01="SHELL", it doesn't display shell
09:14
<sbalneav>
I think it's SCREEN_01="shell"
09:14
no caps
09:15
<wigwam>
yes, sry
09:16
it doesn't work anyway
09:16

<alkisg>
SCREEN_04 = "useroption" ???
09:21
<wigwam>
useroption is my own screen script we used in our company
09:21
but important section is the last one, commented Samsung NT
09:22
i've tried also clean lts.conf with only default section with shell, but it didn't work
09:26
<alkisg>
wigwam: the usual way to get a debug screen is: SCREEN_02=shell SCREEN_07=ldm
09:26
I've heard that SCREEN_01 shouldn't be used, but I don't remember exactly why.
09:26
<wigwam>
alkisg: thanks, i will try
09:26
<nubae>

sbalneav: i've just tried, but the same result...
09:33
i've noticed that after message loading hw drivers the screen blinks and font is changed... but log continues until "Starting LTSP client..." message
09:35
and then just blinking cursor...
09:39
<Gadi>
wigwam: try SCREEN_04=shell
09:39
and override your GUI
09:40
<wigwam>
Gadi: i've just tried lts.conf with single SCREEN_02=shell screenline
09:40
in default section
09:40
and result is the same
09:41
<Gadi>
right - but you have problems with the Xserver
09:41
so, override the GUI
09:41
then, you should get your shell
09:41
from which you can do an X -configure
09:41
and see if there are driver issues
09:41
for example
09:41
<wigwam>
04 is default tty for X?
09:42
<Gadi>
no - your useroption runs in Default under 04
09:42
so, under your specific client section, override that
09:42* Gadi is just reading your lts.conf
09:42
<wigwam>
i've removed specific sections, i will paste testing lts.conf i currently us

09:45
<Gadi>
wigwam: what distro are you running?
09:46
<wigwam>
ah, ubuntu 8.04
09:46
i've just wondered why are you smiling, but i've got it (after i switched on the syntax hilight)
09:47
<Gadi>
hehe
09:48
can you switch to ctrl-alt-f2 on boot?
09:48
with that lts.conf
09:48
<wigwam>
yes
09:49
i can switch to tty0 - tty6 i think
09:49
tty0 contains 2 lines of startup messages, other ttys just blinking cursor
09:49
<Gadi>
but you get no shell prompt on screen 2?
09:49
<wigwam>
exactly
09:50
<Gadi>
try an lts.conf with just the lines:
09:50
[Default]
09:50
SCREEN_02 = shell
09:50
(no comments at all)
09:51
I am concerned that your lines with indented comments may not be parsed correctly and cause a syntax error
09:52
<wigwam>
hmm, i don't think so
09:53
i tried to test if lts.conf i edit is used by that client so i made the syntax error

hi
13:41
what are possible causes for the client not using the lts.conf from tftpboot? (ubuntu jaunty)
13:44
<sbalneav>
moldy: wrong permissions, invalid file, bugs in ltsp, etc.
13:44
<moldy>
sbalneav: hmm
13:46
sbalneav: permissions look ok (644/755). the file is completely not present in the /etc of a client
13:46
<sbalneav>
Where have you placed the file?
13:46
<moldy>
sbalneav: if i use the same file from /opt/ltsp/i386, that works
13:46
sbalneav: /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/lts.conf
13:47
<sbalneav>
Not sure then.
13:47
<moldy>
sbalneav: any hints on how to debug this? what is responsible for this mechanism?
13:48
<laga>
a script in the initramfs
13:49
<moldy>
laga: thanks
13:51
laga: hm, where is that usually located? it seems my ltsp is using an initrd?
13:52

same thing :) you can look at the scripts in /etc/initramfs-tools/ and /usr/share/initramfs-tools/ AFAIK

14:05
<moldy>

Depends which tftp server you've got installed. normally it's tftpd-hpa

never mind, found it i think
14:09
RRQ from 192.168.0.22 filename /lts.conf
14:09
sending NAK (1, File not found) to 192.168.0.22
14:09
hmm, some path is somehow messed up i guess?
14:10
ah, yep. the arch part ("i386") of the path is missing
14:11
<sbalneav>
so just put it in the /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp dir :)
14:11
<moldy>
right :)
14:11
so this could be considered a documentation bug, actually?
14:12
<sbalneav>
Dunno.
14:12
if it changed, I can check, and update my docs
14:13
<moldy>
the comments in the lts.conf in the chroot say you should use /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/lts.conf
14:13
<sbalneav>
Prolly best to file a bug in launchpad then.
14:14

14:19
<sbalneav>
eurgh
14:20
your on your own then.
14:20
default is to use the stock dhcp3-server and tftpd-hpa
14:20
<moldy>
sbalneav: dhcp-option=17,/opt/ltsp/i386 <-- that is the relevant line in my dhcp config, i think
14:21
<sbalneav>
there's an included dhcp3.conf file that sets things correctly. if you override that with your own packages, you'll have to fix your stuff up accordingly.
14:21
<moldy>
i will compare this to the stock dhcpd config later
14:21
thanks for your help so far
14:21
<sbalneav>
Any reason why not to use the standard ISC dhcpd and tftpd-hpa?
14:22
<vagrantc>
moldy: you'll also have to tweak the dhcp-boot parameter.
14:22
moldy: there should be an example in /usr/share/doc/ltsp-server/examples/dhcpd-dnsmasq
14:22
<moldy>
sbalneav: i use tftpd-hpa. i don't use isc dhcpd because i like dnsmasq and it's alot simpler (i do need local dns)
14:23
the isc dhcpd/bind combo would be overkill for my network
14:25
but i have an understanding of the problem now, so the fix will be quite easy :) thank you
