Hi I have a sound problem. Clients don't speak. Tried bennybiy trick, anyway

Hi vagrantc I followed the chan last days, about sound problem on clients. I tried the bennybiy solution but it didn't work. I'm a bit lost (google is quite mute, too)
16:20
<vagrantc>
urly: what exactly did you try?
16:22
<urly>
the -L module-suspend-on-idle line add in the initscripts client
16:22
ltsp-init-common script
16:27
<vagrantc>
what distro?
16:28
<urly>
ubuntu 12.04.2
16:28
server 64bits client 32 non-pae
16:29
<vagrantc>
you ran ltsp-update-image after applying it?
16:29
<urly>
yes
16:30
<vagrantc>
are you able to get sound at all, or inconsistantly?
16:32
<urly>
no sound at all, sound icon shows sounds mutes at first sound client occur. No sound at log neither.
16:32
at login I mean

might just not be recognizing your sound card... are you sure the sound modules are loaded??
16:36
<urly_>
no I'm not sure, but I think, what module? (and got freeze got to reboot now the urly one)

snd used by 8 on the client
16:46
chipset via ac 97
16:49
client's built-in speaker works on ubuntu 10.04 LTSP
16:53
but not on 12.04
16:54
<vagrantc>
might b ean OS driver issue
16:56
<urly_>
ok what should I do?
17:04
<vagrantc>
urly_: can you boot an ubuntu live image off USB stick or something? see if sound works?

17:48
<bennabiy>
Someone having sound issues?
17:50
<urly_>
Yep bennabiy, without your 'luck'
17:51
<bennabiy>
what distro?
17:51
<urly_>
ubuntu 12.04.2, server 64bits, client 32bits non-pae (linux-generic)
17:53
<bennabiy>
Are you able to get any sound on the clients?
17:54
<urly_>
right now with lubuntu live usb yes, but
17:55
with ltsp no, sound seems to break when some sound client start
17:55
no sound at greeter neither
17:57
eg ubuntu sound test or firefox youtube html5 test makes mute the sound icon notifier
17:58
and modules unload themselves as well
18:03
<bennabiy>
Can you pastebin your /opt/ltsp/i386/usr/share/ltsp/ltsp-init-common

ok I leave lubuntu liveUSB and restart LTSP client now until screen 2
18:13
<bennabiy>
If you set up your lts.conf to enable the shell screen, I can walk you through how to manually restart your audio, and see if that fixes it temporarily
18:15
<urly_>
I see, client booted
18:15
I've got a root account on screen 1, good?
18:17
<bennabiy>
yes
18:18
do you know if you have a text editor installed in your chroot?
18:18
<urly_>
vi I guess
18:18
<bennabiy>
Are you comfortable with vi?
18:18
<urly_>
more middle yes than middle no
18:19
<bennabiy>
Ok.
18:19
so vi /sound.sh
18:20
<urly_>
sound.h in root new file opened
18:21
sorry /sound.sh new file
18:21
<bennabiy>
good
18:22
I will make a pastebin for you to copy from, so I do not flood the room with text
18:23
http://pastebin.mozilla.org/2879884
18:23
but before you run this script, we will have to clobber the current pulseaudio session
18:24
on the client shell
18:24
ps -ef | grep pulse
18:24
look for the entry that has pulseaudio --system
18:25
tell me when you are caught up
18:26
<urly_>
no pulse thing (no user logged...)
18:26
<bennabiy>
log in a user
18:27
Now do you have a pulse session?
18:28
<urly_>
I log before pasting or after?
18:29
<bennabiy>
You can make the script, and then log in
18:29
two different systems at this point
18:31
<urly_>
yes and some more ps grep pulse
18:32
<bennabiy>
Actually, you can also make this change for the sake of having a log... vi /usr/share/ltsp/ltsp-init-common and add in after the --system -vvvv and for the --log-target=syslog change it to --log-target=file:///pulse-debug.log
18:34
What that will do is enable debugging logging, and log all output to the root directory of the chroot, where you can copy it to the home directory of the logged in user if you need to access it.
18:34
after you do that, go ahead and clobber the pulseaudio session on the client
18:39
<urly_>
ok 1) I kill the ps id of pulse ? 2) I hope you will tell how to catch the logs between systems
18:42
<bennabiy>
yes
18:42
the pulse which has the --system
18:43
You should see an bash entry, a pulse entry and your grep search
18:44
tell me when it is killed
18:44
<urly_>
ok ps with blablabla pulse blablabla killed, user connection killed
18:45
it was a ssh blabla pulse ... no more pulse entry
18:46
<bennabiy>
Hmm, sounds like you killed your user session
18:47
you should look at the client syslog and see if something prevented the pulseaudio from starting in the first place.
18:49
<urly_>
ok, ... how ? (never done the log things, but really want to)
18:49
<bennabiy>
less /var/log/syslog
18:49
type "/pulse" and press enter
18:50
it will search for the term pulse
18:50
you can press n to go to the next instance
18:51
<urly_>
allright, pulse events
18:51Parker955_Away is now known as Parker955

hmm. did you log your user back in?
19:02
<urly_>
yes
19:02
<bennabiy>
ok
19:03
do you see a /usr/bin/pulseaudio ps entry?
19:03
should be with the user pulse
19:04
possibly root
19:06
<urly_>
ps -f g| grep pulse doesn't say /usr/bin/pulseaudio, only ssh and grep
19:06
<bennabiy>
ok, did you make the changes to ltsp-init-common?
19:06Phantomas has left IRC (Phantomas!~Phantomas@ubuntu/member/phantomas, Quit: Leaving.)
19:07
<bennabiy>
if so, then do a chmod +x /sound.sh
19:07
then /sound.sh
19:07
<urly_>
I did your -L change in ltsp-init-common
19:07
wait sorry my user is not in -G audio, should he?
19:08
<bennabiy>
Nope, should be in the pulse-access group
19:09
If your user is in audio, you can clobber permissions on the server potentially
19:11
<urly_>
? I give the group audio or pulse-access to user?
19:12
<bennabiy>
pulse-access
19:12
not audio
19:12
audio gives the user control over the actual hardware, which means you would be able to output sound to the server, rather than your client
19:13
in LTSP, the client machine is actually the audio server, and the server is the client
19:13
<urly_>
user added, and ok... very good
19:13
<bennabiy>
ok then type /sound.sh
19:14
after doing the chmod I listed above
19:14
then do a ps -ef | grep pulse
19:14
and see if you have a new listing
19:14Parker955 is now known as Parker955_Away
