Morning mealstrom :)
07:00
<mealstrom>
Hyperbyte: hi, as i remember, you are using sflphones on ltsp thin clients, right?
07:01
<Hyperbyte>
Yessir. :)
07:02
And as I remember you are running LTSP, which means you could add your location and LTSP success story to our worldmap at our brand new website http://www.ltsp.org/
07:02
(sorry, had to spam for a bit)

Hyperbyte: sflphone is run as localapp or not?
07:38
oh new site design
07:44
<Hyperbyte>
mealstrom, you can run it as both localapp and server app
07:44
Local app in theory should perform better, with 1.1.0 I've had problems running it locally, but with 1.2.0 it runs good again locally
07:46
<mealstrom>
Hyperbyte: what headset you are using jack 3.5 or usb? (im using localapps for sflphone, and ive got usb headset with button mute on it. sometimes when im pressing mute my usb keyboard or usbmouse stop working until i press mute againe. some problems with usbhid)
07:49
<Hyperbyte>
USB, Plantronics DA45 USB adapter, with Plantronics Supraplus wideband headsets
07:50
No idea about the mute button by the way, but you could easily disable the mute button alltogether
07:51
My DA45 adapter completely crashes X with it's USB device
07:51
I've disabled the USB HID in xorg conf
07:51
Audio still works then, as that's a seperate device.
07:56
<muppis>
Maybe related or not: About two years ago there was problem with HP's mouse disabling button as it disabled all buttons. Problem was it triggered two separate places and could not enable it anymore, because the wrong be catches the button first.

hmm. i saw , there are usbhid , usbkbd, usbmouse modules. If i disables usbhid -- keyboard or mouse stops working. i was disabling them via RCFILE_XX="modprobe -r ..."
08:03
<Hyperbyte>
mealstrom, you need to disable device, not the module
08:06

08:07
That's how I disabled the Plantronics HID

mealstrom, not sure.
08:24
<mealstrom>
just add script to chroot and update image ?
08:27
<Hyperbyte>
Well you'll have to adapt it for your own USB device
08:27
And then add to chroot and update image

For curiosity, how long takes when you run ltsp-update-image -i ?
12:43
<alkisg>
What's -i ?
12:43
<muppis>
Image only.
12:43
<alkisg>
How big is the image, and what cpu? It depends...
12:43
E.g. for a fat image == 1 Gb compressed, it takes my laptop about 10 mins
12:43
<muppis>
I'll put in pastebin when it finishes.
12:44
<alkisg>
For a thin == 250 Mb compressed, much less
12:45
<muppis>
Around 10 min has been for my fat.

Sata
12:57

for mirror raid(2 sata) it takes about 5 minutes (2.3 uncompressed)
12:57
on amd phenom 4core
12:58
<muppis>
Not in raid, and propably even Sata I
12:58
<mealstrom>
i've got 2 sata (1) in software raid (md)

<mealstrom>
bottleneck is disk IO. as i tested it uses tmp directory
13:00
best way is to use for this ramfs tmp directory and second drive for ltsp.img or ltsp_directory
13:02
in your case you've got one drive for : 1. disk read. 2. disk write to img.file 3. disk write to tmp dir.
13:03
<muppis>
Hmm.. Now it frozes to 90%..
13:04
<mealstrom>
thats ok

7m38.555s same chroot as compressed.
13:07
<mealstrom>
nice time for 3.1 Gb
13:07
<muppis>
Oh well.. User time is 10 min. :)
13:08
<alkisg>
If you're doing that too frequently, you might want to consider a dedicated partition (or loopback file) instead of a chroot
13:08
<muppis>
File size is now 1.4G
13:08
alkisg, I've thinking about that.
13:09
<alkisg>
I've been using that method for quick testing for development, it works fine
13:09
<muppis>
But I do not have room in existing hdd's nor to add separate hdd.
13:09
<alkisg>
It needs less space than a chroot + an image
13:09
You create a loopback compressed btrfs partition
13:10
Move /opt/ltsp/i386 in there, and delete /opt/ltsp/images/i386.img completely

18:41
<Schroeder>
do the hardware requirements at http://wiki.ltsp.org/wiki/Installation assume a graphical environment?
18:43
<vagrantc>
Schroeder: those specs are a bit outdated
18:44
<dead_inside>
you could probably still do graphical with those specs
18:44
<Schroeder>
well
18:44
<vagrantc>
128M is still pretty much the realistic bare-minimum for a graphical thin client
18:44
<Schroeder>
I actually am planning on a purely text-mode environment
18:44
<vagrantc>
64M might work for a text-mode environment
18:44
<Schroeder>
and those specs seemed a bit high for that
18:45
<dead_inside>
then you will be fine
18:45
<Schroeder>
which is why I asked
18:45
<vagrantc>
but some distros may not even boot with so little ram
18:45* Schroeder is a dedicated Slacker, so no problem there :)
18:45
<dead_inside>
lol
18:45
<vagrantc>
interested in getting upstream LTSP support into slackware?
18:46* Schroeder would even use an older version if necessary
18:46
<vagrantc>
my first thin client implementation acctually started off essentially using slackware :)
18:46
<Schroeder>
it's basically to provide an interface to our catalog and circulation system for a private membership-cooperative library I'm working with
18:46* jocarter used to love slackware a long time ago
18:46
<jocarter>
(and then I came to my senses)
18:47
<Schroeder>
so a curses UI over SSH is sufficient
18:47
so as long as the thin clients can run a recent version of ssh, I'm happy
18:47

If you're using LTSP and you think it rocks, add your success story to the LTSP world map at our brand new website: http://www.ltsp.org/
18:49* vagrantc has mixed feelings as to weather LTSP at freegeek is a success story :(
18:50
<vagrantc>
it used to be an obvious success ... now i'm not so sure
18:50
<jocarter>
maybe you're just to close to it
18:50
if you get to close to anything you say all the ugly hairy parts
18:50
<vagrantc>
maybe
18:51
we did make a significant improvement by throwing a nicer server at it
18:51
never really had the time to get fatclients and/or localapps working well.
18:51
though we could realistically set up hardware that could

<Schroeder>
oh, so there's no way to just download a simple source tarball
19:05
LTSP just became MUCH less attractive
19:05
<dead_inside>
ltsp is not a program, its a consept
19:06
<vagrantc>
Schroeder: it is an install of $OS into a chroot, configured to be network booted
19:06
<elias_a>
:P
19:06
<Schroeder>
vagrantc: yes, I know
19:06
<elias_a>
Back to basics! :D
19:06
<vagrantc>
is it that hard to bootstrap a slackware chroot?

<Hyperbyte>
alkisg, I found a great tutorial about dual touch-screen setups on Ubuntu
19:20
Should be able to mock it all into an RCFILE I can load into lts.conf. :-)
19:20
Else I'll need to write some /etc/xdg/autostart/ magic. Either way, I think I can figure it out. :-)
