<frifri>
hey everybody
08:27
i'm trying to set firefox as a ltsp local app, but somehow it remains executed on the server
08:27
<m4xx>
how are you trying to run it?
08:28
<frifri>
via lts.conf
08:28
[DEFAULT] LOCAL_APPS=TRUE LOCAL_APPS_MENU_ITEMS=TRUE
08:29
<m4xx>
what if you do ltsp-localapps firefox
08:29
<frifri>
nothing happens
08:30
<m4xx>
is firefox installed on the client image?
08:30
<frifri>
oh..
08:30
perhaps thats the issue
08:31
you know how to make that?
08:32
<m4xx>
on my ubuntu install i would "chroot /opt/ltsp/i386 && apt-get install firefox"
08:32
changing i386 for what ever your arch is
08:33
why do you want to run firefox on the client?
08:34
<frifri>
because i need a fluent replay of flash video
08:35
but thanks so far
08:37
<markit>
m4xx: no need for mount -t proc /proc /proc and export LTSP_HANDLE_DAEMONS=false ?
08:38
<alkisg>
Not for firefox, it doesn't contain any daemons
08:44
<markit>
hi alkisg :)
08:44
<alkisg>
Hello :)
08:44
<markit>
I thought that all the mount -t proc was because of the inside of aptitude
08:44
in any case, will not damage using it :)
08:45
alkisg: yesterday night I've been back to school server, to finish setup... is a shame I'm still working at it, but I've few time and took a wrong road I had to correct
08:45
(script for student account generation)
08:45
in addition, KDE should be fixed / empowered to have a decent global setup utility
08:45
like gnome has

whoo. I sure do hate it when a major network line fails, and it takes 72 hours to get it back up due to shoddy wiring

09:39
<robehend1>
of course ;)
09:40
would have helped, mind you, if the previous tech had labelled the patch panel by something feasible, like room numbers. Instead of labelling it as the name of the staff that was in the room at the time, 15 years ago

robehend1, 15 years ago they thought that y2k will never come.

<robehend1>
say, out of curiosity, is that a graphical or cli tool that will let me see what clients are booted to my LTSP? Just want to see their IP and Mac address, more info of course always welcome
09:48
<muppis>
robehend1, from terminal with w you'll see wherwe user has logged in. LTSP users are easy to spot.
09:48
<robehend1>
muppis: how will they be different, so I know what i'm looking for?
09:51
<muppis>
robehend1, if I recall coreectly, it shows X display number in where -info.
09:51
<robehend1>
when i type w, i get username, from, jcpu, idle, and login time.
09:52
<muppis>
Hold, just booted my own ltsp client to check.
09:53bobby_C has joined #ltsp

<muppis>
It's just lazy to boot. Loads over 54g wlan.
09:54
<robehend1>
fun stuff
09:54
i looked at setting up a roaming LTSP setup that would hook up to my LAN via 54g wlan, but idk if t he throughput would be able to handle 15 clients all doing firefox.
09:55
Server would be connected to the clients via gb switch, it would just be connected to the internet via the wlan
09:55
<muppis>
If not n -serie wlan, it would die under load.
09:56
<robehend1>
thats what i figured
09:56
and by god if the 2nd graders cant play flash games..
09:56
<muppis>
:)
09:56
<robehend1>
i'd hoped Gcompris and Childsplay would be enough for them. but i guess not
09:57
<muppis>
I made my htpc to boot over wlan. Booting is lazy, but need for sd h264 video.
09:58
<robehend1>
no local os on the htcp? I use ubuntu running XBMC for mine
09:58
<muppis>
No local. Installed xbmc as localapps and autostarting that after autologin.
09:58
<alkisg>
If the server is connected to the clients via gb switch, then it'll run fine...
09:59
<robehend1>
alkisg: even if they are all attempting to go out to a website at once?
09:59
alkisg: a horrendous, flash based website full of shiny things?
09:59
<alkisg>
Sure, you have more than 50mbps internet connection?
09:59
That's just internet traffic (downloading the flash site), it doesn't have anything to do with ltsp...
09:59
<muppis>
System runs fine, but loading sites would be terrible.
09:59
<alkisg>
Why/
09:59
?
09:59
We have 2 mbps internet connection in our schools
09:59
<robehend1>
The server would be hooked into the internet via wlan 54g
10:00
<alkisg>
54 >>>> 2...
10:00
<robehend1>
i was wondering if that had the throughput to support it is all
10:00
<alkisg>
robehend1: so what's your internet connection speed?
10:00
<robehend1>
12 mbps
10:00
<alkisg>
Is it really more than 50 mbps?!
10:00
So, your wlan doesn't limit anything at all
10:00
You can even lower it to 20 mbps and not see a difference from if you had a cable connection...
10:00
<robehend1>
hmm, alright. I'll have to give it a shot when theres freetime
10:01
bbiab, office calls
10:01robehend1 has left #ltsp
10:02
<muppis>
alkisg, wlan drops more quickly when attempting to utilize that.. I have seen dropping from 125 Mbps to disconnection when trying load meny files at once.
10:02
Hmmm.. My ltsp didn't boot..
10:02
<alkisg>
muppis: are you talking about connecting ltsp clients via wlan, or just the server to the internet via wlan?
10:03
<muppis>
Just server to the internet.
10:03
<alkisg>
Never seen problems with that... especially since the internet connection is 5 times slower than the wlan connection
10:03
<muppis>
Had 8 Mbps at that time.
10:04
<alkisg>
Maybe you had a poor signal?
10:04
E.g. with torrents one has lots of concurrent connections, I never heard of problems over wlan with that
10:05
<muppis>
Nope. AP couldn't handle the traffic.
10:06
Darned. Client doesn't start and can't check now why, kids watching toons.

i'm trying to modify the bootsplash for my thin clients, i've created my own images and modified the symlink in /opt/ltsp/i386/etc/alternatives and that didnt work, then i tried renaming my theme's directory to ubuntu-logo which didn't work, i also tried tochanged the ubuntu-log.png to my logo which also didn't work, i've update the ltsp image after each change, none seemed to have an effect.

i've decided that I hate 3com
12:28
<muppis>
Why so?
12:28
<robehend1>
i've got this 3com switch, which worked fantastically for over 2 years..and now its crapping out on me every 3 hours or so
12:28
i lose all connection to the devices plugged into the switch, but if i hard power it off and reboot, it comes back like nothing happened
12:29
<muppis>
Maybe just end of life?
12:29
<robehend1>
its 2 years old
12:30
<muppis>
2 years sounds like ROHS fault..
12:30
<robehend1>
not familiar with that
12:31
<muppis>
Bad soldering caused by missing lead.
12:31
<robehend1>
ah..
12:31
See, what really bugs is that when it's working, it works great! but when it drops..since its in my core distribution, it drops alot..

i'm trying to scan the network with wireshark, but i dont know enough of what i'm looking at
12:36
<muppis>
What you are trying to find out?
12:38
<robehend1>
if something is causing a large amount of network noise which could be screwing things up
12:39
<muppis>
Then you might want to look for broadcast traffic.
12:39
<robehend1>
thats ARP, isnt it?
12:42
<muppis>
ARP uses broadcasting, but shouldn't cause problems.
12:45
<robehend1>
hmm...i'm seeing what I *think* is a lot of broadcast.
12:45
<muppis>
More like some program multicasts something. Try look for IP over 200.x.x.x
12:47
<robehend1>
dont see any
12:47
<muppis>
ifconfig shows your broadcast IP, look for that also.

when i filter it down to ethernet broadcast, i get tons.
12:48
<muppis>
Any protocol or source mentioned?
12:48
<robehend1>
512 packets out of 4655
12:49
combination of ARP and NBNS, for the most of it.
12:50
or maybe its just a crappy switch. I'm assuming that if the other switches seem to be doing fine, on the same LAN, that it likely isnt network noise?
12:54
<muppis>
Switches should handle that amount of ARP and NBNS just fine, so it more likely faulty switch you got there. 512 packets of ARP/NBNS is just like saying hello in public place.
12:54
<robehend1>
thats what i figured.
12:54
Guess its time to see if this old Cisco 3500 series is any good, to get us through
12:55
<muppis>
You should receive different results at least.
12:55
If ain't any better.
12:55
<robehend1>
true. means i need to track down a serial cable to see what version of the IOS this thing has..been in storage since I started here ha
12:56
<muppis>
Sounds good..
12:58
I've been happy with HP at work. No hw based problems so far..
12:58
<robehend1>
I'm looking at HP for our new building. This building is in the "hope and pray it lasts a year" stage
12:59
also known as the "even though you can bring the switches with you, we wont buy them until we're putting them in the new building"
12:59
<muppis>
:)
13:01
<robehend1>
ha, and oddly enough, i just had a quote for some extremely entry level unamanged 24 port gigabit HP Procurves come across my desk
13:02
<muppis>
Not bad, for start.
13:02
