Hi
01:29
Can anybody help with a missing video driver question

<jakob__>
Is there a channel for LTSP 4.x?
01:34
<rcy>
jakob__: yer on it.
01:37
<jakob__>
OK I need to add an xorg video driver to my ltsp4 xorg-server. Is there an easy way to do this, maybe some prebuild drivers for ltsp-4
01:38
What I need is a s3 or via driver

When I boot my thin client (3 different types) they all end up using the vesa driver.

Is there somewhere a repository of prebuild xorg video drivers for LTSP 4?

<gvy>
jakob__, ugh -- ltsp4 is very weird stuff :(
02:20
if at all possible, move off onto 5
02:20* gvy went so far as hiring a person and adapting ltsp5 for ALT Linux

02:22
<jakob__>
There are certain things I havn't solved regarding LTSP 5. We use kde (kubuntu) the login screen looks very wierd, but first of all the problem is that most of the clients arent fast enough to handle the ssh compresshion
02:31
<gvy>
jakob__, well you can try altlinux
02:31
we prepared the port in a way so older clients wouldn't suffer that much
02:31
in particular, ssh isn't use

03:01
<jakob__>
gvy, Where du I find it? Hopefully you don't meen switching distro?
03:01
<gvy>
jakob__, ftp://ftp.altlinux.org/pub/distributions/ALTLinux/4.0; depends on your setup and troubles
03:02
<jakob__>
I was thinking rippnig the LTSP 4.2 tree. Is that possible
03:07
<gvy>
I once went there to replace some driver but finding a compatible (re options) build was too hard
03:07
and ltsp4 was doomed here anyways. :)
03:08
<jakob__>
OK, so I'm left with rebuilding from the lbe
03:09
<gvy>
maybe
03:09
have you got something that's not supported by already present drivers?
03:11
<jakob__>
via
03:11
s3
03:13
<gvy>
ugh, both can be tricky :( didn't fiddle with both since xorg's properly maintained in alt...
03:14
older drivers like those in fc4 or what ltsp4.2 was based on could have troubles though
03:15
s3 trio64 was rather broken in xfree86 4.x/xorg so far
03:17
<jakob__>
my clients are HP T5135 the specs say via S3
03:22
<gvy>
via c3?
03:24
<ogra>
jakob__, gutsy has a kde theme for ldm and the option to switch off compression (and boots as fast as 4.2)
03:24
oh, and ldm is in C now ... way faster ...
03:25
we worked pertty colse with Riddell and the other kubuntu guys to get kde support rocking over the next two releases (full sound and localdev integration for example)
03:26
<gvy>
ogra, morning :)

<jakob__>
How about the driver question?
03:27
<ogra>
it doesnt see the virtual alsa card
03:27
<jakob__>
ok
03:28
<ogra>
and since kde doesnt use gnome-vfs and doesnt monitor /mdeia either, you dont get icons on the desktop for mounted usb keys
03:28
beyond that and a missing kde theme for ldm all was fine though
03:29
<jakob__>
Does gustu-kubuntu get USB keys right (very important)
03:30

<jakob__>
By the way is Gusty released?
03:35
<ogra>
no
03:35
it will release in october
03:35
but we released a new milestone yesterday
03:35
<jakob__>
OK I guess that anwers my prior question too :-)
03:36
Is the plan to have LTSP-5 mature on release?
03:36
kmix and stuff like that?
03:36
<ogra>
ktsp5 is mature and the latest upstream release since edgy
03:36
*ltsp5
03:36
i know Riddell was working on getting kmix fixed
03:37
<jakob__>
ktsp will that be an actual package?
03:37
<ogra>
the missing desktop icons arent fixed yet, i'll probably add a small wrokaround to the mounter script though
03:37
no
03:38
<jakob__>
Can't it be done like LTSP 4, usnig udev and fuse
03:38
<ogra>
there might be a ldm-qt at some point, the new ldm makes that easily possible
03:38
it is done that way
03:38
in fact we use the latest ltspfs (ltsp 4 isnt develped since 2 years anymore)
03:39
<jakob__>
Why isn't it working on LTSP-5 then? works fine on LTSP-4
03:39
<ogra>
because we want to implement it properly
03:39
<jakob__>
Fair enough :-)
03:39
<ogra>
the way it worked in 4.x was a hack
03:40
i'll add that hack back and add an option for lts.conf in gutsy i think, so kde people can enable it
03:40
for gutsy+1 we'll use hal and all problems will go away magically
03:41
(at least the ones with the differnt UIs)
03:41
<jakob__>
I might want to help out at some point, just not right now.

hi, i am trying to build a network boot image (with cramfs) that starts a simple web browser and therefore needs no terminal server, only dhcp + tftp. do you know projects like this (customizing ltsp may be possible, but i assume it is way to big) ?
04:32
<ogra>
on ubuntu you would run ltsp-build-client --kiosk
04:33
<lol>
ogrs: so this exists already. thanks.
04:33
<ogra>
that removes the ltsp login manager and various other bits from the ltsp tree and installs firefox and a window manager in the client environbment instead
04:34
it could need a lot improvement though ;)
04:34
<lol>
ogra: that is *exactly* what i need, thanks
04:34
ogra: why a window manager ?
04:34
<ogra>
its pretty much the example at the bottom of https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HowtoWriteLTSP5Pluginsn what we use
04:35
whoops
04:35
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HowtoWriteLTSP5Plugins
04:35
lol, firefox wont get the right screen dimensions to run fullscreen if there is no WM
04:36
you can start it with --fulscreen ... but then it wont cover the whole screen in most cases
04:36
*fullscreen
04:36
<lol>
ogra: years ago i had opera on some clients w/o a window manager
04:37
it always got it
04:37
<ogra>
well, you can use opera if you want :)
04:38
i cant put it in an uubuntu ltsp defaulzt install since we dont have it in the main archive ... but installing stuff in a chroot is trivial ...
04:38
thats the whole point of ltsp5 ;)
04:38
<lol>
okay i am on debian etch now
04:38
so i assume that is not right
04:39* lol goes booting feisty
04:39
<ogra>
debian etch should have a similar version of ltsp5 as ubuntu edgy had
04:39
there are backports of the feisty version as well somewhere
04:39
<lol>
oh thanks

<Janet32766>
Gadi, if i have a user logged in (non-root), and a terminal session, how can i 'su' to a priv'd (root type) session from that non-priv'd user acct? su root or su myserverprivacct doesn't accept passwd
10:40
<Gadi>
if that user is non priveleged, you would need to do:
10:40
su - <priveleged_user>
10:40
and then give the password of the priveleged user
10:41
so, if 'bob' is priveleged and you are on joe
10:41
do:
10:41
joe#: su - bob
10:41
password: bobspassword
10:41plamengr has joined #ltsp
10:41
<Gadi>
then, you will be bob and can sudo
10:46
<Janet32766>
sysadmin is my priv'd user, su - sysadmin doesn't work, note, this is in an LTSP env
10:46
<Gadi>
it should be independent of LTSP
10:47
you're just one user wanting to switch to another
10:47
<Janet32766>
i wish :)
10:47
<Gadi>
perhaps you have the wrong password
10:47
spelling counts ;)
10:47
<Janet32766>
negative
10:48
<Gadi>
what error do you get?
10:48
<Janet32766>
invalid login
10:48
<Gadi>
do you get prompted for a password?
10:48
<Janet32766>
yes
10:48
<Gadi>
is sysadmin a simple, local user
10:48
?
10:49
<Janet32766>
yes
10:49
<Gadi>
do you have any kind of network authentication as well?
10:49
<Janet32766>
this is a standard edubuntu install w/LTSP, i can only sudo su when parent process is sysadmin
10:50
<Gadi>
parent process?
10:50
you mean when you open a terminal as sysadmin
10:50
<Janet32766>
i start an x session w/sysadmin login, then sudo su
10:51
<Gadi>
right
10:51
<Janet32766>
if i start an x session as 'bob', i can't sudo su - sysadmin
10:51
<Gadi>
right
10:51
you *should* be able to just: su - sysadmin
10:51
no "sudo"
10:52
<Janet32766>
i'll try...
10:52
<Gadi>
(bob can never sudo - poor bob - he has no sudo privileges)
10:52
