<vagrantc>
alkisg: heh. I just realized that ltsp-manager lacks a depends/recommends on a desktop environment :)
08:12
<alkisg>
Hehe
08:14
<vagrantc>
ah, it pulls it in through ltsp-server-standalone recommends
09:25
<Hyperbyte>
Looks like I have some specific clients that don't switch to ldm properly after boot.
09:25
I removed the vt.handoff=7 I added earlier, I removed the SCREEN_* lines from lts.conf
09:25
But still someone is reporting they have to press ctrl+alt+f7 before they get a login screen
09:25
Yet when I try with a PXE boot with a VM everything is fine.
09:26
<alkisg>
Hyperbyte: do you have epoptes installed? Can we get access to that client when that happens?
09:31
<Hyperbyte>
mmmmm
09:31
Easy answer is no and no.
09:31
I mean, I'm not even physically there myself. :-D
09:31
<alkisg>
No need :)
09:32
I use epoptes to gain access to school servers and epoptes again to gain access to clients
09:32
All I need is the teacher permission...
09:32
Anyways, since ldm is going away, and we'll need to rewrite things for systemd anyways...
09:32
I don't think it's worth it to spend too much time to troubleshoot it
09:33
Did SCREEN_DEFAULT=07 help?
09:33
<Hyperbyte>
I didn't try that
09:33
I added it. We'll see if it goes away.
09:34
I've asked them to report to me tomorrow if it has helped.
09:35
<alkisg>
Nowadays xorg/wayland start on vt1, so using 7 isn't a good idea...
09:35
<Hyperbyte>
I was thinking couldn't I just use SCREEN_01=ldm ?
09:35
<alkisg>
We'll need a lot of rewritting to support newer distros, wayland etc
09:35
You would need to remove the tty1 task as well
09:35
<Hyperbyte>
Ah, okay

<vagrantc>
alkisg: the user sign-up request feature requires some additional hooks in ldm or something?
11:54
<alkisg>
vagrantc: a special lts.conf, documented in the wiki
11:54
2 more lines
11:57
<vagrantc>
yeah, found it
11:58* vagrantc tested an install of ltsp-manager from debian experimental on a clean stretch install
11:58
<vagrantc>
ipappend 3 wasn't set, and reminded me how annoying that is to correct :)
11:58
and apparently xdg-open isn't installed by default
12:03* vagrantc adds a recommends

<vagrantc>
hrm. lz4 compression is supported in mksquashfs, but not the debian linux kernels ... though that's largely fixable
14:07
gives about 50% compression on an ltsp fat image, compared to ~60% with gzip, but compression and decompression speed is much faster
14:07
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LZ4_(compression_algorithm)
14:07
might also be faster for slower clients

<Hyperbyte>
alkisg, SCREEN_DEFAULT=7 didn't help
15:15
<alkisg>
Hyperbyte: 07
15:15
<Hyperbyte>
Yeah, typo on IRC
15:15
<alkisg>
I'm not sure if the code can cope with 7
15:15
<Hyperbyte>
I have 07 in lts.conf
15:15
<alkisg>
O
15:15
OK
15:15
<Hyperbyte>
:-D
15:17
Any ideas what I can try next?
15:17ogra_ has left IRC (ogra_!~ogra_@p5098ed03.dip0.t-ipconnect.de, Quit: Coyote finally caught me)
15:18
<alkisg>
I think it might be some race condition with systemd initializing vts, and with ltsp trying to hijack them, as inittab isn't used anymore
15:18
I don't know why others haven't seen that, but the proper solution would be systemd units for each vt
15:19
Try removing quiet splash in case plymouth tries to handle vt1

alkisg, I think that might be it. Come to think of it, I don't think I had this issue before I added quiet splash.
20:47
Can I keep just 'quiet' and leave out only 'splash'?
20:47
<alkisg>
Hyperbyte: yes
