This is for the "I don't control the dhcp server" part
06:29
Now, for ipxe, do you mean that your clients don't have "boot from lan" option in their bios?

alkisg: I'm not sure. They're Dell Optiplex GX270s and from a bit of googling it seems that they do support that. So the ProxyDHCP will be enough if they do support it?
06:36
<alkisg>
Yes
06:37
If they don't... do they have an OS like e.g. Windows preinstalled?
06:42Mobe has left IRC (Mobe!~Mobe@adsl-85-217-42-202.kotinet.com, Ping timeout: 276 seconds)

<holloway_>
The clients are currently running Edubuntu 11.10 standalone. I don't mind wiping the boxes or installing anything that would be more appropriate.
06:44
But I'll try the boot from lan first I guess, thanks for your help alkisg!
06:44
<alkisg>
holloway_: there's a grub-ipxe package
06:44
You can install that to have ipxe in your edubuntu boot loader
06:44
<holloway_>
cool, that sounds easy.
06:45
<alkisg>
The problem is that it started being available in 12.04, so you'll have to download and double-click the .deb from the packages.ubuntu.com site
06:45
If you don't manage to have them boot from lan, ping me for details
06:46
<holloway_>
manual install of a .deb is fine. I've got a few backup options now so thanks for your help :)
06:47
backup options... I meant fallback options to try if one doesn't work, anyway, I'll go and try that now. thanks again
06:47

Hi folks, I got a small problem with asus-notebooks working as ltsp clients. They start up with internal numpad switched on. Means <fn> and <num> have to be pressed together to switch it off. Is there a chance to bypass this?

piet, try asking in #ubuntu. It doesn't sound like an LTSP-related issue to me.
11:05
<elias_a>
piet: Do they boot OK if booted to Ubuntu from HDD or USB?
11:06
<piet>
@hyperbyte: ok, I thought it would be, because it doesn't happen during standalone startup of same client with same version of ubuntu . . .
11:06
@elias: yes . . . .
11:08
<elias_a>
Hyperbyte, piet: That's what I thought. It is a LTSP issue after all...
11:08
I recall reading of something similar ages ago.
11:09
<piet>
yes, so I do, isn't there a way to switch it off by any kind of terminal command?
11:10
<muppis>
How it comes to mind there package callerd numlockx installed in client?
11:13
Meaning, that could be the reason, as atleast I don't have it installed in this local system running oneiric.
11:18
<piet>
@muppis: I just checked the chroot it is installed, most probabely by standart installation. Do You have asus note, as well?
11:22
<Hyperbyte>
elias_a, that could just mean it's an issue with the way the client is configured. Carry on though, I'm not trying to get rid of anyone. :-)
11:27
<elias_a>
Hyperbyte: Well, I thought so :)

@knipwim: Do You mean lts.conf and switching it off or on?
11:58
<muppis>
piet, yes.
12:11
<piet>
folks, I checked the X_NUMLOCK with true and false. It doesn't matter at all . . .
12:13
My problem includes the special notebook-key <fn>, so switching numlock on and off is not the real problem, but anyhow it was worth a try.

<alkisg>
piet: no, it's not related to LTSP, file a bug against numlockx
12:52
The file you're looking for is there: /etc/X11/Xsession.d/55numlockx
12:52
That's part of the numlockx package, not of LTSP
12:53
Tell them to try to detect the keyboard type before turning on the numlock, to not do it in laptops etc
12:54
From their changelog:
12:54
Someone that does NOT want NumLock to be enabled by X11 initialization
12:54
scripts does NOT need this package (Closes: #202045, #202046).
12:54Parker955 is now known as Parker955_Away
12:55
<alkisg>
So just mention in these bug reports that we do want the package because we have many clients booting from the same chroot but we don't want it to function on laptops

you'd think people would google the proposed project name first to make sure it doens't end up ambiguous

that's it...so there is no solution yet?

no idea, been reported upstream? is there an upstream? you should at least hit the "Does this bug affect you?" link at the top
17:16
a bug that affects 1 person, as it stand now, doesn't really get a high priority for someone else to fix.

piet: He was just a member from the community that happened to see your question. As he said, and as I told you too, it would be better to file a bug report.
17:28
About "my project", if you mean LTSP, it's easy for LTSP to disable the numlockx xsession file at boot when X_NUMLOCK=False... but that would be an LTSP-specific workaround to the numlockx bug that you didn't report
17:29
pem725: because you didn't install a desktop environment, thin clients need it

I thought I did.

perhaps not.

<pem725>
why would my desktop environments not show up in my sessions options (ubuntu 11.10 server)?
21:23
at boot that is...
21:23
sorry about being so obtuse.
21:25
<alkisg>
pem725: you installed some DE on your server, and yet the clients don't show them on the login screen (LDM)?
21:25
<pem725>
yep
21:25
installed xfce4 and gnome
21:25
<alkisg>
On the server, run: ldminfod
21:25
<pem725>
neither show up in my session options.

<pem725>
ran it...now waiting for the client to boot.
21:27
<alkisg>
pem725: no, don't boot the client yet
21:27
Did you see any sessions in the ldminfod output?
21:27
<pem725>
yep
21:27
<alkisg>
OK, now do: grep ldminfod /etc/inetd.conf
21:27
<pem725>
several
21:28
9571 stream tcp nowait nobody /usr/sbin/tcpd /usr/sbin/ldminfod 9571 stream tcp nowait nobody /usr/sbin/tcpd /usr/sbin/ldminfod
21:28
whoops
21:28
sorry about the double paste

<pem725>
so I see inetd contains ldminfod...do I need to restart inetd?
21:31
<alkisg>
pem725: no, just check if it's listening:
21:31
sudo netstat -nap | grep 9571
21:32
<pem725>
yep, ports listed
21:33
<alkisg>
Do you have anything weird in your setup?
21:33
Multiple servers, -cluster, LDM_SERVER in lts.conf, anything?
21:34
<pem725>
multiple nics
21:35
I can stop them
21:35
<alkisg>
Nah
21:35
Anything in /etc/hosts.deny ?
21:35
<pem725>
lts.conf has simple defaults.
21:36
<alkisg>
!SCREEN_02
21:36
<ltsp>
alkisg: SCREEN_02: To get a root shell on an Ubuntu thin client: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/ClientTroubleshooting#Using_a_shell_SCREEN
21:36
<alkisg>
From a local terminal on a thin client (or from another pc), try: nc server 9571
21:36
<pem725>
I have SCREEN_02 config'd in my lts.conf
21:37
<alkisg>
That should give you the ldminfod output
21:37
<pem725>
ok
21:38
no ldminfod on the thin client on SCREEN_02.
21:39
<alkisg>
Did you check /etc/hosts.deny on the server?
21:39
<pem725>
yep
21:39
<alkisg>
And?
21:39
<pem725>
not listed.
21:39
<alkisg>
Well it sounds like a firewalling problem
21:40
Check what's blocking port 9571
21:40
<pem725>
I do use denyhosts and block ssh for those script kiddies but it did not block my ip address.
21:40
OK

alkisg: do you think the firewalling problem would be restricted to port 9571? Everything else seems to work but the sessions are not listed. I cannot login via ldm but I can get to local root screen.
21:57
<alkisg>
pem725: from the server try `nc localhost 9571`
21:58
If that works from the server but not from another pc on your local network, then yes it's a firewall problem. Then try the same with other ports
22:04
<pem725>
returned a bunch of python errors
22:04
uid not found
22:04
I might have screwed some uid's up when I transferred the passwd, shadow, and group files over from my other server.
