<map7>
I'm having trouble running localapps for just one user on my LTSP setup. If i login as a different user on the same thin client ltsp-localapps xterm works.
02:45
The user with the problem is in all the same groups as the working user
02:46
I'm using debian stable 7.8 on the server.
02:50
I can see that the command got passed to the daemon in the thin clients syslog
03:01
I have LOCAL_APPS=true in my lts.conf default section
03:15
I might of changed my sshkey, does this mean I have to do a ltsp-update-sshkeys and could this be the problem?

<championofcyrodi>
i wonder if I can copy the chroot to a ram disk on the server... and then have nbd serve that up.
15:42
the nbd is around 2GB max, and I have 8GB of ram on this PC
15:43
would likely be a lot faster than it's disk
15:43
running image rebuild and it's A LOT slower than my old server
15:56
<ogra_>
championofcyrodi, i used to do that in the past (years ago though) ... should work fine
15:57
just makes rebooting the server slow since you need to copy the chroot each on boot to serve it from there
15:57
(and you need to write some boot script magic)
16:05
<championofcyrodi>
ogra_: thanks. I'll likely give it a whirl.

<championofcyrodi>
hmmm... the chroot's /etc/hosts 'server' entry seems to be resolving the tftp server's IP rather than the actual ltsp server...
16:17
hmmm no that doesnt make sense...
16:18
the dhcp server's IP
16:18
the tftpd is running on the ltsp server.

<championofcyrodi>
of course... i forgot to 'commit' my mod to the dhcpd next-server... so i was still booting the old image!

<muppis>
map7, what you've tried?
23:04
<map7>
If I login to the same thin client as another staff member I can run 'ltsp-localapps xterm'
23:04
I've checked that my user & the working staff member are part of the same groups
23:05
I've checked the log on the thin client and can see that ltsp-localappsd is getting called when I try with my user but nothing is displayed
23:05
xterm does exist in the image
23:06
I haven't upgraded the sshkeys yet as I would have to get everyone off the network to rebuild the image.
23:06
I'm not sure if my ssh key has anything to do with it anyway
23:06
is there a manual test which I could do?
23:06
<muppis>
Using nbd for a image?
23:07
<map7>
I think I'm using NFS on this server, how do I check if I'm using nbd or nfs again?
23:07
I have exports for /opt/ltsp in my exports file
23:08
<muppis>
IIRC, Debian uses NFS by default.
23:08
<map7>
then I'm using NFS, I'm on Debian 7.8 stable
23:09
my client image however is using the 'testing' repo as I needed the new kernel for a new thin client I'm using
23:12
<muppis>
Shouldn't be a problem if other things works.
23:12
!local
23:12
<ltsp`>
I do not know about 'local', but I do know about these similar topics: 'install-localapp', 'localdev', 'localapps-print', 'RDP-localdev', 'localapps', 'LocaldevCommonGroupWorkaround', 'localxterm', 'local-disks', 'local-boot'
23:12
<muppis>
!localxterm
23:12
<ltsp`>
localxterm: Any applications that you launch on a thin client actually runs on the server, not on the client itself. If you want to open a program on the client locally, you can type 'ltsp-localapps <program>' in a run dialog or in a terminal. For example, 'ltsp-localapps xterm' to open a terminal running on the client.
23:13
<muppis>
!localapps
23:13
<ltsp`>
localapps: to access a tutorial on setting up localapps on jaunty, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/LTSPLocalAppsJaunty
23:13
<map7>
I wanted to use a local app for video feeds otherwise it sends a lot of data over the network.
23:14
So I've got vlc in the client image and this works for other users but not mine.
23:16
<muppis>
Created a new user and tested with it?
23:16
<map7>
Not yet, I'll give it a go.
23:17
<muppis>
Do that. If it works with new user then sounds like problem is in your profile and it needs to be cleaned.
23:18
<map7>
ok thanks

<map7>
muppis, the new user works fine
23:27
I don't really want to start my profile again from scratch, are there some things I should compare
23:31
<muppis>
You don't need to. Just backup your home dir, like renaming it, log in and test what you need to get working. Then check with 'rsync -nav /home/your_new_home/ /home/your_old_home/' which files has changed.
23:32
You can try fix them or just get rid of them, which you favor, and move back your old home.
23:33
Or you can directly compare your current home to new user which you just created.
23:34
rsync -nav /home/new_user/ /home/your_own/
23:34
Getting a idea what I'm talking about?
23:35
<map7>
Yeah sounds good. I'll backup and do that
23:36
<muppis>
Hopefully you get it working. I'll need catch some sleep now, alarm goes off in 5 hours. :D
23:37
<map7>
thanks for your help muppis
23:37
At least I know it's just my profile and not my LTSP setup
23:37
<muppis>
