<munesh>
i have pc with two lan adaptor
09:34
and pre install ubuntu server 14
09:35
hi
09:35
<alkisg>
!ltsp-pnp
09:35
<ltsp>
ltsp-pnp: ltsp-pnp is an alternative (upstream) method to maintain LTSP installations for thin and fat clients that doesn't involve chroots: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/ltsp-pnp
09:35
<alkisg>
Try this one ^
09:36
Don't use ubuntu server, use ubuntu desktop cd
09:36
And one network card
09:37
<munesh>
but i have loat to applications on my ubuntu server
09:38
<alkisg>
The ltsp server needs to have xorg installed, a graphics environment tec
09:38
etc
09:38
The ubuntu server cd doesn't have a graphics environment installed
09:38
You can install it now if you want, but I don't know of any tutorials to help you with that
09:38
<munesh>
but i install desktop gui in server
09:39
<alkisg>
Then why didn't you use the desktop cd?
09:39
<munesh>
becuse i try to convert my existing system in to ltsp
09:40
<alkisg>
OK
09:40
<munesh>
my main requrment is use ltsp clint for development in my company
09:41
<alkisg>
You can install ltsp on top of your existing system, and it should be easy
09:41
Unfortunately I don't know of any good tutorial that describes how to do that classic setup
09:41
<munesh>
i done evry thing
09:42
and i also build thik clint suscessfully
09:42
<alkisg>
When you try to boot a client, what message do you see?
09:42
<munesh>
but i thik i make some mistake in dhcp configuration
09:43
it try to connect and after some waiting thine clint boot with there origenal os
09:46
can send me proper networking configuration setting for ltsp
09:47
i my cash i have one router with ip range from 192.168.1.0 to 192.168.1.100
09:48
<alkisg>
What IP do you have for your internal network card?
09:50TatankaT has left IRC (TatankaT!~tim@193.190.253.114, Ping timeout: 246 seconds)
09:52
<munesh>
i use 192.168.1.5 for ltsp server machine
09:52
on network adaptor eth0
09:52
<alkisg>
and for eth1?
09:52
<munesh>
192.168.1.102
09:53
<alkisg>
When you install ltsp with 2 network cards, they are supposed to be in different subnets
09:53
If they are not, then use one NIC, not two...
09:54
<munesh>
know tell me if i use one NIC then how i can shear internet in termnals
09:54
<alkisg>
The terminals will get internet from the router
09:55
You have one subnet, don't you?
09:55
<munesh>
ok , please can you send me proper configuration setting for one nic
09:56TatankaT has joined IRC (TatankaT!~tim@193.190.253.114)
09:56
<alkisg>
With one nic, you don't install dhcp server in the ltsp server
09:56
You use the one from the router
09:56
!proxydhcp
09:56
<ltsp>
proxydhcp: A proxy DHCP server is defined by the PXE specification as a server which sends auxiliary boot information to clients, like the boot filename, tftp server or rootpath, but leaves the task of IP leasing to the normal DHCP server. More info: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/ProxyDHCP
09:56
<alkisg>
Read this ^... but also remove isc-dhcp-server
09:59

Hello all, I'm on Debian Wheezy and trying to switch from NFS to NBD. The contents of "pxelinux.cfg/default" are already correct. But when the client boots, I get the message "can't open '/scripts/nbd'". Obviously "/usr/share/initramfs-tools/init" wants to source "/scripts/nbd", which does not exist. Shouldn't it be instead "/scripts/local-top/nbd"?

myrdd: you probably have the wrong cmdline for nbd
15:04
It's not "boot=nbd", it's root=/dev/nbd0
15:05
You shouldn't need to edit that by hand; set update-kernels.conf instead
15:08
<myrdd>
alkisg: in the update-kernels.conf: CMDLINE_NBD="root=/dev/nbd0"
15:10
In pxelinux.cfg/default it _does_ end up as "root=/dev/nbd0"
15:11
However, there's no "nbdroot" option – is this an issue?

17:24
What do you have there?
17:24
(in the chroot)
17:25
Or, try adding boot=local in the command line
17:25
boot=nfs => uses scripts/nfs
17:25
nbd uses scripts/local
17:25
The BOOT variable in the configs lets you define something else
17:26
But nothing sets BOOT=nbd, so it's some local change in your setup
17:27
Also remove quiet to make it more verbose

<vagrantc>
default is usually boot=local, at least with initramfs-tools ...
18:17
nbd hooks in with a local-top script
18:19
myrdd: i missed some of the context, what's the issue?
18:21
<myrdd>
Hi vagrantc, the issue is, I need to manually set "boot=local", otherwise the client cannot boot. The message is as follows:
18:21
Begin: Mounting root file system ... /init: .: line 220: can't open '/scripts/nbd'
18:21
I have no idea where the BOOT=nbd comes from
18:21
<vagrantc>
what distro?
18:21
<myrdd>
debian wheezy
18:22
both server and client, both amd64
18:23
I suppose the DHCP server isn't involved here. No?
18:24
<vagrantc>
is your pxelinux.cfg/default a symlink?
18:25
either in /srv/tftp/ltsp/amd64/ or /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/amd64 ?
18:25
is this a new install, or an old one?
18:26
myrdd: is the BOOT=nbd in your pxelinux.cfg/default file? what about pxelinux.cfg/ltsp?
18:26
<myrdd>
No symlink. Also, none of the parent dirs is a symlink.
18:27
<vagrantc>
ok, if pxelinux.cfg/default isn't a symlink, then ltsp-update-kernels won't update it ... it only updates pxelinux.cfg/ltsp*
18:27
and creates pxelinux.cfg/default as a symlink to "ltsp" if not already present ...
18:28
this allows local admins to configure custom boot entries... and shoot themselves in the foot :)
18:28
<myrdd>
So "default" should be a symlink?
18:28
ah-ha -.-
18:28
<vagrantc>
myrdd: is the BOOT=nbd in your pxelinux.cfg/default file? what about pxelinux.cfg/ltsp?
18:29
or rather, boot=nbd
18:29
<myrdd>
one moment pls
18:30
<vagrantc>
myrdd: is this a new install, or an old one?
18:31
<myrdd>
old install, that is, it has been a fresh wheezy installation, and now I'm switching the existing chroot from NFS to NBD
18:34
vagrantc: In fact pxelinux.cfg/default _does_ change when I run "ltsp-update-kernels"
18:34
<vagrantc>
but it's not a symlink?
18:34
<myrdd>
no
18:34
<vagrantc>
i thought that was implemented in wheezy, but maybe not till after wheezy...
18:35
myrdd: could you paste your update-kernels.conf ?
18:37
<myrdd>
vagrantc: update-kernels.conf, without comments: https://pastebin.mozilla.org/8846315
18:39
<vagrantc>
myrdd: and where is the BOOT=nbd or boot=nbd showing up?
18:41
<myrdd>
ah. Nowhere visibly. I am _guessing_, due to the source code, that BOOT appears to be "nbd".
18:42
This is what I'm referring to: http://anonscm.debian.org/cgit/kernel/initramfs-tools.git/tree/init?h=wheezy#n220
18:43
line 220
18:44
<vagrantc>
so, you had this working with NFS ... what *exactly* did you change when you tried to switch to NBD?
18:44
<myrdd>
The client shows the following message -- before showing a Kernel Panic -- :
18:44
Begin: Mounting root file system ... /init: .: line 220: can't open '/scripts/nbd'
18:45
<vagrantc>
with wheezy, you should be able to specify both options in update-kernels and use a menu to select between them
18:45
<myrdd>
vagrantc: IIRC I just changed BOOT_METHODS and ONTIMEOUT

18:48
That grep shows nothing…
18:49
<vagrantc>
what do you mean you have a menu? your update-kernels.conf doesn't show a menu configured... ?
18:49
what's in pxelinux.cfg/default? could you paste that?
18:50
it my be in /srv/tftp/ and /var/lib/tftpboot ... see if there are any differences between the files
18:50
<myrdd>
I meant that when I set "PXELINUX_DEFAULT=menu", then I get a menu at the client.
18:51
<vagrantc>
yes, and then you can set BOOT_METHODS="NBD NFS"
18:51
and select which at boot
18:51
or BOOT_METHODS="NFS NBD"
18:51
<myrdd>
yes, that's true. Thanks for that one.
18:51
<vagrantc>
it should default to the first one in BOOT_METHODS
18:52

<vagrantc>
how did you generate the NBD image?
18:55
<myrdd>
vagrantc: That `grep` has 58 lines. Wanna see it?
18:56
<vagrantc>
myrdd: yes please
18:56
<myrdd>
https://pastebin.mozilla.org/8846324
18:58
<vagrantc>
myrdd: where's your tftp dir?
18:58
<myrdd>
To generate the NBD image, I simply ran `ltsp-update-image`
18:58
<vagrantc>
myrdd: sha256sum $tftp/ltsp/amd64/initrd.img* /opt/ltsp/amd64/boot/initrd.img* | sort -n
18:59
do the checksums match?
18:59
<myrdd>
Well, there's /var/lib/tftpboot and /srv/tftp -- I don't know the difference yet.
19:00
<vagrantc>
they're both present?
19:00
<myrdd>
yes
19:01
<vagrantc>
what's your tftp server?
19:01
<myrdd>
umm, dnsmasq
19:01
<vagrantc>
grep -r tftp /etc/dnsmasq*
19:02
<myrdd>
tftp-root=/var/lib/tftpboot
19:02
<vagrantc>
is tftpd-hpa installed?
19:03
<myrdd>
Okay, /srv/tftp is very old -- I must have created it when I set up LTSP
19:03
<vagrantc>
dpkg -l tftpd-hpa
19:03
well, /srv/tftp is the default directory for tftpd-hpa ...
19:04
<myrdd>
I see. Yes, I once had tftpd-hpa installed. It's now uninstalled (status "un")
19:04
<vagrantc>
which was probably installed by default when you initially installed ltsp ... though dnsmasq can also work.
19:04
<myrdd>
that's it
19:05
So I'll remove /srv/tftp
19:06
<vagrantc>
and after you remove it, see if your client boots at all...
19:08
which directory did your paste of pxelinux.cfg/default come from?
19:08
<myrdd>
Yes, it's no problem, still works.
19:08
<vagrantc>
ok, so ...
19:09
myrdd: sha256sum /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/amd64/initrd.img* /opt/ltsp/amd64/boot/initrd.img* | sort -n
19:09
do the checksums match?
19:10
<myrdd>
sry the delay. so many terminal windows :) -- all sha-sums matched
19:10
It's been /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/amd64/pxelinux.cfg/default
19:12
<vagrantc>
myrdd: lsinitramfs /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/amd64/initrd.img-3.2* | grep conf

By the way vagrantc, thanks for your help! I'll keep using my workaround to get NBD working. However, do you have any idea where the source of that issue could be?
20:30
<vagrantc>
last place to look is in the initramfs itself ...
20:31
or you're not booting off the server you think you're booting off of
20:31
something in the initramfs is overriding the specified boot arguments
20:32
since weheezy, the same initramfs should be usable with both NFS and NBD, so it shouldn't require any hard-coding.
20:32
wheezy
20:33
but older versions did require different initramfses
20:34
<myrdd>
I could try with a fresh chroot setup. It's possible to have a Jessie ltsp-chroot on a Wheezy server, no?
20:35
<vagrantc>
why not just switch to jessie entirely if you're going that route?
20:36
official support for wheezy will likely end in about 6-7 months...
20:36
<myrdd>
Some of the server software we're using is not compatible yet with Jessie.
20:36
Yes I know :)
20:36
So I'll stick with the workaround for now
20:37
<vagrantc>
wheezy will likely get LTS support for another couple years on amd64/i386, at least
20:43
though there are builds running on bpi0 and hb0 ... if the console has lost connection to them, i wonder if it will be able to actually kill the running jobs
20:44
oops
20:44
