nope, i can't
11:29
it fails then
11:29
<alkisg>
What command line, and what error?
11:30
<zamba>
trying gnome-session-fallback
11:30
now something else happened
11:30
but i'm getting lots and lots of new windows, all named untitled
11:31
<alkisg>
Do they show up in `ps aux` ?
11:32

it broke my graphics here at my end

got lots of artifacts here now
11:34
loosing focus all the time
11:34
this is insane
11:34
why does this ALWAYS happen to me?
11:34
<alkisg>
There's an x2go mailing list, you can try to troubleshoot the problem with their help there
11:35
<zamba>
there.. had to kill x2go
11:35
<alkisg>
Usually x2go runs fine here, in 10+ setups...
11:35
<zamba>
well.. as i said :)
11:35
usually doesn't apply to me

zamba, again with the negative thinking!
11:55
You know if you go into things convinced that they're going to go wrong, you're dooming yourself, right?
11:59
<zamba>
Hyperbyte: i know :)
11:59
<Hyperbyte>
;-)
11:59
Meanwhile, have you added your LTSP success story to the LTSP worldmap?
11:59
<zamba>
hehehe
11:59
i have no ltsp success story to tell
12:00
<Hyperbyte>
!worldmap
12:00
<ltsp>
worldmap: If you're using LTSP, please let the world know and share your story at http://www.ltsp.org/stories/ Your can add a nice pin to our world map at your location, plus your setup will count towards the global LTSP usage statistics.
12:00
<Hyperbyte>
You're running LTSP, aren't you? :P
12:00
<zamba>
well.. it's not working..? :)
12:00
<Hyperbyte>
When it is, be sure to add it. :P
12:00
What problems are you facing now?
12:01
<zamba>
i don't know, since i'm not locally.. and that's why i need x2go to be able to see what's actually going on at the site
12:02
<Hyperbyte>
Are clients not booting at all, or is there some other problem?
12:02
<zamba>
they are booting, so there is some other problem
12:02
some application not working and similar
12:02
probably a user error
12:02
because i've upgraded the ubuntu version on the TC server
12:03
<Hyperbyte>
Wow... you did this remotely?
12:03
Without being there?
12:03
<zamba>
i had to
12:03
because nothing worked
12:03
<Hyperbyte>
:o
12:03
<zamba>
udhcpc was the problem
12:03
sent the emtpy vendor id thingy

12:04
<Hyperbyte>
What do you mean 'upgraded the Ubuntu version'? You went from 11.04 to 12.04 or something?
12:04
<zamba>
yeah
12:04
i think it was three upgrades
12:04
<Hyperbyte>
You know, I like living on the edge as much as the next guy, probably even more...
12:04
<zamba>
i believe i went from 10.10 to 12.04
12:04
as i said.. i had no choice
12:04
<Hyperbyte>
But doing these kinds of upgrades without being at the machine... that's wow.
12:04
<zamba>
well.. it's a virtual machine
12:05
<Hyperbyte>
Oh
12:05
So
12:05
<zamba>
running in xen, so i had the console all the time

Here's an idea

hi im using ltsp with ubuntu and try to do a simple failover system with uacrp the problem is that squashfs closes the socket when the secondary server takes over. is there a way to "reconnect" the squashfs to the new server without rebooting?

JustSomeGuy, you will need to use nbd-proxy
13:17
JustSomeGuy, you will also need to make sure your image is the same
13:18
JustSomeGuy, just add "NBDCLIENT=nbd-client-proxy" on the append line of your pxelinux.cfg/default
13:19
that's for 12.04
13:19

<kev_j>
for personalizing the xorg.conf files to each computer; do I need to make the config file on the computer first (i.e. I read someone's post about he used a live cd to get the xorg file and then copied it to the ltsp server), or is it sufficient to make it from within the LTSP enviro?
17:53
<||cw>
kev_j: I have one thing I do that for, found a configure-x.sh script that generates the conf using "Xorg -configure -novtswitch :1 > filename" and then it customizes it from there using a lot of sed
17:55
filename holds error output, btw

<alkisg>
Why not just use X_* lts.conf directives instead?
18:11
<||cw>
in my case, its a touch screen driver with an awkward service that expects an xorg.conf
18:11* ||cw slaps 3M around a bit
18:14
<kev_j>
holy crap...
18:15
<||cw>
for screen res and stuff I use the X_* stuff
18:15
needed a conf is rare
18:21
<kev_j>
is there a good example of all the X_* options/variables or just what's in the man page? (I don't really know anything about xorg past it managing video drivers... or whatever)
18:21
and by example I mean guide/readme or man page... that type of thing
18:26
<||cw>
what do you need to do that doesn't seem covered by the man page?
18:26
<knipwim>
man xorg.conf ?
18:26
<||cw>
no, the lts.conf X_* params
18:28
<kev_j>
oh, I missed the line about you probably won't need these except in special circumstances... the stuff about X_OPTION_*
18:29
so I guess it was just any options that I could use with it, but if I won't need it then it's a moot point
18:29
or I guess probably won't need it is a better way to say it
18:30
<||cw>
what are you wanting to customize?
18:30khildin has left IRC (khildin!~khildin@ip-80-236-226-111.dsl.scarlet.be, Read error: Operation timed out)
18:30
<||cw>
autodetect is pretty good, though I've had to set too high a resolution for some CRT's. they work, but really hard to read. the X options allow forcing a lower res
18:31
that's where I use them most
18:31
<kev_j>
I just have minor issues on certain computers (using desktops as thin clients to work out any bugs)
18:32
<||cw>
this is the only time I've needed to actually use an org conf https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/3MMicroTouchDriver
18:32
me too, desktops all around
18:32
<kev_j>
the ldm login box, which is usually in the middle, jumps to one monitor or the other somewhat randomly
18:33
<||cw>
oh dual screens
18:33
it'll jump to whatever screen it thinks should have focus
18:33
<kev_j>
on a system with a 5770 ati card running three screens wil turn the left screen purple on occasion...
18:33
just quarky things
18:35
well I understand that it would jump to whatever screen should have focus, but it usually doesn't jump until I log in and log back out.. stuff like that
18:36
<zamba>
how do i disable the screen saver lock for all users?
18:36
the problem is that the screen is locked after some minutes of inactivity
18:36
and when using autologin this is a problem
18:39
<kev_j>
how would you go about setting defaults for all users in general?
18:40
<knipwim>
alkisg, vagrantc i think it's meeting time, but only jamcq and Hyperbyte are present

vagrantc: quick question... are there any changes to how local_apps_menu_items works for the wheezy build?
18:42
<vagrantc>
kev_j: off the top of my head, i'm not sure
18:43

ok.. well I will keep playing with it and try to get it to work on my system. thanks anywho

kev_j: how?
19:18
kev_j: i tried using gsettings, but that didn't stick

19:19
<kev_j>
oh, I have no idea, I was adding on to your question.. I would like to know how to set defaults too
19:19
^zamba
19:20
<zamba>
i'm looking at gconf-editor now
19:20
http://library.gnome.org/users/gconf-editor/stable/defaults-mandatory.html.en
19:20
that
19:21
<kev_j>
personally I use lxde, but I switched over from gnome because I had too many issues... I was thinking it had to do with either /etc/skel/ or /etc/xdg/whatever
19:21
<zamba>
the settings have been set, but they're not applied
19:22
<kev_j>
the settings may be set in gnome, but if they're being overruled by something else than it wouldn't matter (I think)
19:22
<zamba>
there's some files in /etc/gconf/
19:23
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/DisableScreenLock
19:23
and i guess this doesn't apply either
19:24
remove gnome-screensaver, maybe?
19:25
<kev_j>
I dunno, wouldn't that just get rid of the screensavers themselves and not the lock screen?
19:25
<zamba>
one would think
19:25
but none of this is straight-forward, s
19:25
so
19:27
<kev_j>
Personally I am able to disable the screen saver just by going to the menu, prefs, screensaver prefs, and disabling it ...but like I said before, I am on LXDE
19:27
<alkisg>
zamba: $ cat /usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas/10_sch-scripts.gschema.override
19:27
[org.gnome.desktop.screensaver]
19:27
lock-enabled = false
19:27
...
19:28
That affects the defaults, it's not a mandatory setting
19:29
<zamba>
why that file now all of a sudden?
19:29
earlier it was /etc/gconf/
19:29
# cat /usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas/10_sch-scripts.gschema.override
19:29
cat: /usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas/10_sch-scripts.gschema.override: No such file or directory
19:29
<alkisg>
gconf was replaced with dconf + gsettings in recent gnome versions
19:30
<zamba>
but i need to set this mandatory.. because the users shouldn't be able to suddenly lock their screens
19:30
<alkisg>
sch-scripts is a package we use here in greece to automate ltsp installations
19:30
So it was just an example, it's not expected for you to have that file
19:30
Locking down gnome settings is a bit more difficult, let me get you a link...
19:31* vagrantc notes that lxde uses xscreensaver by default, which used to have a file located in /etc/X11/ somewhere
19:32
<alkisg>
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/edubuntu-users/2012-August/007069.html
19:32
Ah that's about lxde, not gnome screensavers? /me hasn't read all the chat...
19:32
<kev_j>
I'm using LXDE, zamba is using gnome, and I was looking for defaults in a more general sense
19:33
like the menu bar and default background and such
19:33
but I think I may have found it... maybe
19:35
I still haven't made any headway on the local apps thing yet though
19:35
running it from the terminal works, but local_apps_menu_items doesn't seem to do anything
19:36
so I am looking through the xdg directories because I found something saying that it uses that to change the way the menu works or something?
19:36
<vagrantc>
kev_j: you have LOCAL_APPS_MENU=true ?
19:36
<kev_j>
yeppers
19:36
<vagrantc>
and the apps installed in the chroot?
19:36
<kev_j>
to both
19:37
<vagrantc>
can you run the apps manually with ltsp-localapps FOO ?
19:37
<kev_j>
local_apps=true for good measure, local_apps_menu=true, and local_apps_menu_items=firefox
19:37
yes I can
19:38
<vagrantc>
and there's a firefox.desktop file in /opt/ltsp/i386/usr/share/applications/ ?
19:38
<kev_j>
yes.. except it is amd64
19:38
<vagrantc>
what package ships that file?
19:39* vagrantc only has iceweasel.desktop
19:39
<kev_j>
I double checked that.. it wasn't there before, but I cp'd the one from my server (same build and everything)
19:39
same install file in fact
19:39
<vagrantc>
so, you manually installed a .desktop file and wonder why it doesn't work?
19:39
<kev_j>
I am confused because it was working, and then I did some tweaking and now it doesnt'

to be honest (as if it is that hard to tell) I have no idea how the .desktop files work
19:41
guess I will read up on that and come back when I understand a little better

so I'm reading through this http://developer.gnome.org/integration-guide/stable/desktop-files.html.en and nothing jumps out at me that is wrong with the desktop file I am using

is there anything that stands out to you? http://pastebin.com/VAbbCjnv
19:53
oh, well there you go
19:56
<vagrantc>
kev_j: this is on a debian system? why not just use iceweasel?
19:58
<kev_j>
no idea, I had already removed it and put time into firefox by the time I realized that it is more or less the same thing
19:58
so somewhere between stubborn and stupid
19:59
<vagrantc>
using external software often leads to headaches.
20:00|GuS| has left IRC (|GuS|!~MysT@unaffiliated/gus/x-663402, Quit: Konversation terminated!)
20:00
<kev_j>
as I have been understanding better and better
20:00
<vagrantc>
what makes debian packaging work is more that people agree to abide by debian policy, not some technical superiority. when you use external third-parties, you don't generally have that.
20:01
(i mean, i think debian packaging is pretty technically impressive, but that's besides the point)
20:01
<kev_j>
well it was more because I didn't know that firefox plugins work with iceweasel and greasemonkey at the least is integral right now
20:04
I also have very whiny end users that don't like change.. if the menu bar moves from the bottom to the top, even if it doesn't change anything else, they pitch a fit
20:06
and I had not used iceweasel before.. I always just used a windows machine and ssh'd in to make changes
