<bennabiy>
Can the tftp server pass nbd settings like the DHCP does? (for example root-path blah)
02:58
<jammcq>
bennabiy: no
02:58
the tftp server is simply a file transfer program
03:07
<bennabiy>
I mean at the kernel
03:07
in default
03:07
<jammcq>
I don't know what you mean
03:09
<bennabiy>
Basically' I have my system set up to boot thin clients i386 arch. But I run one fat client I am experimenting with' which is amd64 like the server' but I need to tell it a different nbd root path
03:09
as of right now' I have it getting that from the dhcp
03:09
option root-path
03:09
or some such
03:10
to tell nbd the context of which image to serve up
03:10
<jammcq>
ok, so dhcp can handle that
03:10
<bennabiy>
yes' but what if I did not know the mac address of a machine and needed to give a boot menu to choose thin or thick?
03:11
<jammcq>
ummm
03:11
I'm not sure what kind of options you can put in the pxelinux config file for the boot menu
03:11
<bennabiy>
I am hard setting a host in dhcpd.conf right now' and it works
03:19
oh well' tomorrow is another day.

How can I get screen locking to work with a fat client?
14:41hs366 has left IRC (hs366!~hs366@c-220-235.netlogon.liu.se, Remote host closed the connection)
14:48
<bennabiy>
When I log in to my fat client through a non administrative user, I can access the desktop fine, but when I try to log in through a user which I usually log into the server, it will not mount my home directory, causing many things to fail. Also, it will not allow me to lock the screen like a normal user.
14:48
can I copy my user to the chroot to allow for screen unlocking and such?
14:56
<alkisg>
Just set a password locally
14:56
After login
14:59alexqwesa has left IRC (alexqwesa!~alex@109.172.12.47, Ping timeout: 245 seconds)
15:00
<alkisg>
Or try to make LDM store the password hash in /etc/passwd...
15:02Phantomas has joined IRC (Phantomas!~Phantomas@ubuntu/member/phantomas)
15:02
<bennabiy>
would I need to hack ldm server for that, or is there an easier way?
15:02
Do you know why my administrative user is failing to mount home, when a standard user is fine?
15:03
I get a bunch of python errors with my admin user
15:03
<alkisg>
Python errors for mounting /home/username?
15:03
With sshfs?
15:04
<bennabiy>
python errors as a result of not being able to access home
15:04
<alkisg>
So it's irrelevant
15:04
Reboot a client. Login as your administrative user, after clean reboot. Does that work?
15:05
Then logout and check the output of `cat /proc/mounts` before logging in again
15:05
<bennabiy>
I am going to need to log out of this session... let me pull up this room as a different session

ok, so let me try to log in my fat client again
15:12bennabiy1 has joined IRC (bennabiy1!~Thunderbi@24-181-55-79.dhcp.gnvl.sc.charter.com)
15:12
<bennabiy1>
hmm. so it worked this time
15:12
I cleaned out all my cache.. I wonder if there was just a bad config stuck womewhere
15:13
<alkisg>
Try logout and then login again
15:13
<bennabiy1>
so how do I go about adding a password to this account, through the normal users and groups?
15:13
ok
15:13
<alkisg>
cat /proc/mounts inbetween, if you suspect that a problem will arise
15:13bennabiy1 has left IRC (bennabiy1!~Thunderbi@24-181-55-79.dhcp.gnvl.sc.charter.com, Client Quit)

15:16
<bennabiy1>
ok, in between it still showed my user home mounted. Should it unmount between, or will it just mount the next one once I log in as someone else?
15:17
<alkisg>
After logoff, /home/username should have been unmounted
15:17
What was the output of cat /proc/mounts?
15:17
<bennabiy1>
I still saw the gvfs entry for my user
15:17
let me try one more time

hmm, it bombed on me the last time with transport end point not connected
15:25
after reboot it let me in again
15:25
but no, home was not mounted, just the entry for gvfsd for my user
15:26
<alkisg>
No difference

<alkisg>
If any part of /home/username/* is mounted, then sshfs won't mount /home/username
15:26
<bennabiy1>
nope, nothing like that mounted
15:26
<alkisg>
Isn't .gvfs?
15:26
That's /home/username/.gvfs...
15:26
<bennabiy1>
it was /run/
15:26
tmpfs
15:26
<alkisg>
Which distro/verson/ltsp package version?
15:27
<bennabiy1>
Mint/Ubuntu 13.04
15:27
<alkisg>
And, output of `cat /proc/mounts`
15:27
Do you have the latest upstream fixes?
15:27
I committed a fix for that some months ago...
15:28
<bennabiy1>
yes, my build is based on upstream, including my latest fix for mint ( I know because it pulled my theme )
15:28
<alkisg>
Output of /proc/mounts?
15:29
<bennabiy1>
http://pastebin.mozilla.org/3479691
15:29
while logged in
15:30
I guess I can log out and then output to a file on the root, and then log back in again (hopefully ) and pastebin it as well
15:30
but there was no /home when I was logged out, just that last gvfsd-fuse /run/user/bennabiy/gvfs fuse.gvfsd-fuse rw,nosuid,nodev,relatime,user_id=1000,group_id=1000 0 0
15:30
<alkisg>
Or use epoptes, or screen_02=shell, or ssh etc
15:31
<bennabiy1>
I can pull up a root login while logged out... it is just a matter of getting the output to a place where I can screenshot it, or copy it
15:32
<alkisg>
scp file server:
15:32
<bennabiy1>
I am working from a one screen station :) I have the monitor hooked up to the server, and to the client
15:32
true
15:32
<alkisg>
or epoptes => open terminal => middle click for copy/paste
15:32
<bennabiy1>
I do not think I have client on this image yet
15:34
Let me give it a go and see what I can produce.
15:34
back in a bit.

when all users but root logged out
15:39
I wonder if it has something to do with programs not terminating by the time the logout happens, so something keeps home from mounting
15:39
You can diff the two entries
15:41
what would be the appropriate method for mounting another folder under /home (I keep a public folder there for all users to share)
15:41
would I have to do an NFS export, or could I do multiple NBD?
15:42
For example, can I pick and choose server folders that I want to make it to the fat client without having to do NFS?
15:43
<alkisg>
SSH_EXTRA_MOUNTS or something, read the lts.conf manpage
15:43freedomrun has left IRC (freedomrun!~freedomru@unaffiliated/freedomrun, Quit: So long and thanks for all the fish)
15:43
<alkisg>
So I guess the problem now is no longer /home/username/.gvfs, but /run/user/username/gvfs... that one needs to be unmounted on logout too
15:44
LOCAL_APPS_EXTRAMOUNTS
15:46
<bennabiy1>
ok.
15:46
Does lts.conf man page document all the fat client options?
15:46
<alkisg>
It should, if not it needs to
15:47
<bennabiy1>
alkisg: that file does not block login every time as I was able to log in with it being there, but it is the only user specific file still mounted on the system at logout
15:50

bennabiy1: sorry, I have 3 kids and 3 jobs, it's a little hard to chat too much on irc
16:23
No, that's not me
16:24
You can set a password from the ldm rc.d scripts
16:24
I don't use menu customizations
16:25
<bennabiy1>
alkisg: I understand that one... I try not to chat too much either, but I am trying to figure out this fat client thing. If you have something alittle more helpful than the generic outdated info on UbuntuLTSP then I would not bother you
16:26
although, I do like getting to know actual people too :)
16:26
But I guess that is part of why I live in a community of people
16:27* alkisg doesn't have any links to "better but hidden docs". It's all there in the ltsp.org wiki or in the distro wikis...
16:27
<alkisg>
Knowing people is nice, sure, but sometimes chatting too much online makes for less offline friends :)
16:27
