<alkisg>
vagrantc: Hello! You said you'd work on finding good names for RM_SERVICES etc :P
05:16* alkisg will implement that today, and then do a thourough precise ltsp testing
05:21
<alkisg>
Ah vagrantc btw I renamed "-d", i.e. --mount-dev-pts, to "-t", because of the new "--mount-dev" I introduced to ltsp-chroot, hope it's not much of a problem
05:22
And also, if you have input about making NBD_NAMED the default... do you need NBD_INETD for backwards compatibility, or can we just remove the ltsp-update-image code that updates inetd?

<_UsUrPeR_>
good evening folks
05:24
<alkisg>
Hi _UsUrPeR_
05:24
<_UsUrPeR_>
I would like to state, for the record, that as of Monday, I will no longer be associated with disklessworkstations.com
05:25
<alkisg>
Oh... will you continue to work with ltsp systems? Or will you move on to other areas?
05:25
<_UsUrPeR_>
it has been a wonderful experience, and it great to speak with all of you. I will still be around, just not in the official capacity I once was.
05:26
I am more than happy to assist and mess around with LTSP as time permits.

hi! is should install ltsp to suse linux enterprise server 11. however, the repository http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/server:/ltsp/openSUSE_11.1/ is not available anymore. where can i find it from?
06:12_UsUrPeR_ has left IRC (_UsUrPeR_!~jsass@c-76-112-192-21.hsd1.mi.comcast.net, Quit: Leaving)
06:14
<haba713>
hmm... i think i got it installed
06:15
but not yet configured.
06:16
now, can i configure it to serve my win 7 remote desktop client? what i need is my normal linux desktop shared with remote desktop protocol. no thin client suppot like pxe booting or so...
06:21
<vagrantc>
haba713: rdesktop or freerdp is what you're looking for
06:21
rdesktop has been around longer, freerdp has seen more recent development
06:22
<haba713>
i know rdesktop client but has it server also?
06:26
what i need is a remote desktop server for linux. i'm not sure if such a thing is available. :P
06:27
we currently use vnc but i think that remote desktop protocol performs better and needs no separate client installed in windows desktops.
06:29
<vagrantc>
i forget what it's called, but there is an rdp server for linux
06:30
<haba713>
i think i found it: http://www.xrdp.org/
06:30
<vagrantc>
xrdp
06:30
yup
06:31
<haba713>
vagrantc: thank you for your time! i wish all the best to ltsp which seems to be interesting but not for my purpose.
06:31
bye!
06:32

vagrantc: hehe, too late
09:14
When you wake up I'll be done, so do any changes you want later on :)
09:15
<vagrantc>
in general, i'd like to keep backports as backwards compatible as possible (i.e. the current debian stable release doesn't support named exports, although it might not be difficult to backport NBD)
09:16
<alkisg>
vagrantc: I left inetd support there, I just made named exports the default
09:17
So --openbsd-inetd updates inetd.conf
09:17
(I'd prefer --inetd, but -i was taken)
09:17
(and also it separates it from xinetd)
09:18
But for code readability, we should remove all that port/inetd based configuration stuff in some later version
09:18
...and probably we should use nbd-server/conf.d instead of writing nbd-server/config

Guys, any idea why latest LTSP5 on gentoo is reading the lts.conf from the chroot instead of the tftpboot dir?
13:02
<_UsUrPeR_>
[GuS]: I am incredulous. I have never used LTSP with a gentoo installation, actually, I have never even used gentoo, but the implementers couldn't have screwed up LTSP on it that bad :)
13:02
<[GuS]>
:P
13:02
<_UsUrPeR_>
are you 100% sure that it's using /opt/ltsp/i386/var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/lts.conf?
13:02
<[GuS]>
Well, I had one older version of LTSP5 and was reading the conf file from the tftpboot folder...
13:03
_UsUrPeR_: /opt/ltsp/x86/etc/lts.conf. Yes i am sure
13:03
<_UsUrPeR_>
oh. Okay. I think that's a version of LTSP I have never used
13:03
may be ltsp4.2?
13:03

No..
13:04
is LTSP5
13:04

DO NOT COMPILE IN THE CHROOT
13:32
<Stefan544>
hm ok
13:32
<knipwim-work>
the only thing i can think of is it tries to download it from tftp, and uses the fallback location on the chroot when that fails
13:32
<_UsUrPeR_>
here's what you do:
13:32* [GuS] booting
13:32
<_UsUrPeR_>
get an i386 machine with the same kernel version
13:32
<Hyperbyte>
_UsUrPeR_, I believe the /etc/lts.conf in the chroot is used for NFS implementations. It's not needed with NBD.
13:32

Stefan544: get an i386-capable machine with the same kernel version, and build freerdp in there.
13:33
Stefan544: when you have successfully compiled freerdp, use checkingstall to create a .deb package
13:33
Stefan544: you can then just copy the .deb package in to the ltsp image, and run it in the chroot
13:34
Stefan544: does that make sense?
13:34
<Stefan544>
Ok, well in that case, why not in THE machine "hosting" ltsp..? You mean that after I have compiled it in a machine with same kernel and architecture, just copy the whole program folder into the ltsp build and then run "ltsp-update-image" ?
13:35
<_UsUrPeR_>
Stefan544: that could work too, yeah. As long as the program folder is working properly
13:36
<Stefan544>
Ok, thanks. I will do some testing and get back here again if it fails.
13:36
<_UsUrPeR_>
Stefan544: I normally serve LTSP on a 64-bit arch, so I always have to do this on a separate machine
13:36

13:36

19:13
<vagrantc>
i still wonder if i shouldn't go with NBD...
19:14
<stgraber>
what was the reason for sticking with nfs?
19:15
<vagrantc>
it's a lot easier to maintain, in my experience.
19:15
<stgraber>
right, modifying the chroot and having the changes apply immediately is kind of nice
19:16
<vagrantc>
and having to explain ltsp-update-image, not editing lts.conf in place, all that mess.
19:16
that said, NBD definitely has better performance
19:17
although with the new initramfs code, it's easier to switch back and forth...
19:17
so it'll be easier for people to decide...
19:17
<stgraber>
yep
19:17
<vagrantc>
might even be able to switch back and forth on a per boot basis... which would be nice for development testing.... but then switch to NBD once everything is set up.

should be easily doable, it's really just a matter of having both installed and changing the tftp entry
19:19
<vagrantc>
right... wonder if there's an easier way pre-tftp
19:20
<stgraber>
we might be able to abuse dhcp for that ;) or make the init scripts do the right thing and fallback to nfs if nbd isn't available
19:21
<vagrantc>
ok. i'll get ldm uploaded and then we'll see what i can do with LTSP today.
19:22
<stgraber>
ok. Would be nice to have trunk tested on both Ubuntu and Debian before we tag 5.3, just so we don't need to tag 5.3.1 a day later ;)
19:23
<vagrantc>
yeah, i should have time to work on it today and monday
19:23
you've got a fairly hard deadline of tuesday for ubuntu?
19:24
<stgraber>
I need to upload ltsp on Thursday at the latest but I'd prefer to have a few days to spare
19:25
if Thursday works better for you, I can deal with tagging 5.3 on Wednesday night / Thursday morning and uploading it then
19:25
<vagrantc>
i hope to have it in good shape for debian by today or monday at the latest :)

nbd-proxy have a small issue when reconnecting. but francois-denis will fix it soon.
19:47
<vagrantc>
nbd--proxy is disabled by default now, yes?
19:47
highvoltage: and presuming i get all that done.,, ltsp-cluster* :)
19:48
<mgariepy>
vagrantc, yes :)
19:49
<vagrantc>
nbd-proxy mostly had issues with slower clients?
19:50
<mgariepy>
the first release had issues with dual core processor
19:52
the second one is working extremely well with port based export, i haven't had issue with the fixed one. (i don't have <64M client either)
19:55Parker955_Away is now known as Parker955
19:57
<mgariepy>
and from the tests i made with port based exports, i had almost no difference for performance when using it.

although i didn't really test the new features, it's a small code change and didn't break the defaults.

<vagrantc>
stgraber: so, it seems debian will ship with aufs (no idea about overlayfs) ... would it be back for the initramfs hooks to force_load both aufs and overlayfs for you?
22:18
<stgraber>
vagrantc: doesn't the current initramfs hook work with both already?
22:19
<vagrantc>
stgraber: yes, it works with both, but doesn't include the aufs module.
22:19
<stgraber>
ah, what happens to force_load if the module doesn't exist?
22:19
<vagrantc>
stgraber: it complains that it doesn't exist
22:19
the it still runs...
22:19
<stgraber>
does it still work though?
22:19
ok, good
22:19
aufs was entirely removed from Ubuntu, so as long as it doesn't make update-initramfs fail, I'm fine.
22:22
<vagrantc>
think it should work fine... we could also add some more conditional logic to check if the module is present and only load it in those cases...
22:23
got some weird issue where //etc/hosts ends up with a line "server server"
22:23
<muppis>
:D
22:29
<vagrantc>
stgraber: i guess i could just drop another hook in there for debian to force_load aufs instead of forcing it upstream.
22:29
although for backportability, probably easier to have both work
