<jvin248>
itknight: Xubuntu worked like Kubuntu (6.10) though I haven't been able to get client sound to work on either. I also installed ltsp on Linux Mint Bianca test machine. I have to sign off, sorry for the post length, but here are the steps: sudo apt-get install ltsp-server-standalone openssh-server; sudo ltsp-build-client; sudo nano /etc/ltsp/dhcpd.conf (or use vim, change IP address, adjust 'authoritative'); sudo invoke-rc.d
05:56
dhcp3-server restart; sudo ltsp-update-sshkeys; then google for 'rom-o-matic" and get a boot floppy if your client machine won't network boot on its own. Hardware I've found works back to AMD/Cyrix/P2-200's vintage, mostly due to Linux Kernel 2.6 default, probably could do older machines if installed kernel 2.4 in ltsp directories but haven't tried (find location in ltsp.conf). Good Luck!

:D
08:30
ogra: the root-tree of the ubuntu_6.10_i386 does not have /etc/inittab, it's start which init 1??
08:31
<ogra>
it starts the scripts of /etc/rc2.d by default ...
08:31
ubuntu uses upstart instead of init ...
08:31
upstart uses the files from /etc/event.d instead of inittab
08:34
<IRCzito_home>
ok, thanks... I want know this to work in slackware root-tree :D
08:34
<ogra>
well, look at the code from breezy or dapper, they used sysvinit
08:36
<IRCzito_home>
ow thanks, I have root-tree of debian_etch_i386, do you know if this use sysvinit?
08:36

hey chuck
10:11
<jammcq>
wow, look who showed up
10:11
<laprag>
heh, forced indoors by the rain
10:11
<ogra>
so
10:11
<laprag>
'sup?
10:12
<ogra>
i got nfs4 running
10:12
not really any exciting performance gains :/
10:12
<jammcq>
laprag: hey, I was down in Brazil last week. Ran into one of your norwegian buddies
10:12
ogra: any gain at all?
10:13
<laprag>
oh? small world
10:13
<jammcq>
laprag: remember Knut ?
10:13
<laprag>
Yrvin?
10:13
<jammcq>
yep
10:13
<laprag>
ah
10:13
he gets around
10:13
and you!
10:13
<jammcq>
yes, he's doing some evangelizing for TrollTech these days
10:13
<ogra>
jammcq, nope .... bootchart shows even 20sec more boottime of my vm ...
10:13
<laprag>
oh is he? scott's old job?
10:13
<ogra>
but you have to load a lot for nfs4 ...
10:13
<jammcq>
yeah, I think he's got part of that job
10:14
laprag: Knut seems like he was put on this earth to just have fun, and so far, seems to be successful at it
10:14
<laprag>
hehe
10:14
you're right
10:14
he knows how to do that
10:14
<jammcq>
i've bumped into him a few times over the years, and I've never seen him without a big ole smile
10:15
<ogra>
i wonder why he's still not in politics ...
10:15
<jammcq>
that would prolly spoil the fun
10:15
<laprag>
heh, an honest politician? not even here
10:15
<ogra>
he should be on his way to become mayor in his ages
10:15
*age
10:16
<laprag>
i think his dad used to be
10:16
<ogra>
well, he once told me it would be his biggest dream
10:16
<jammcq>
really? wow
10:17
ogra: hey, we're planning a few events over the next several months, if you'd care to partake in our fun
10:17
<laprag>
ogra: any great news in feisty for ltsp?
10:17
<ogra>
send me dates :)
10:17
<jammcq>
the week of July 23rd, many of us will be in Portland, OR for OSCON,Ubuntu-Live and another hackfest
10:17
<ogra>
i'm planned for an amount of EU confs
10:17
<jammcq>
then, somwhere around Oct 27th, we'll be up in Maine for the next BTS
10:17
<ogra>
for which i dont know the exact dates yet
10:18
i'll likely be at ubuntu-live ... not sure yet
10:18
<laprag>
jammcq: you sure about the venue for BTS now?
10:18
<jammcq>
ogra: which dates don't you know yet?
10:18
laprag: well, the Ubuntu UDS this fall will be in Boston, and the dates have been announced, so we can start making BTS plans
10:19
<ogra>
two for one tour to stoxckholm and another one to cyprus
10:19
<jammcq>
ah
10:19
<ogra>
one must be in june or july ...
10:19
i'm not even sure i have tbe there
10:19
<jammcq>
laprag: also, in about 10 days, we'll be in Seville, Spain for UDS
10:19
<ogra>
but if, then it has highest prio
10:20
<laprag>
in Seville, eh? Pick up one of Robert Wilson's books for a dark introdction
10:20
<ogra>
heh
10:20
<jammcq>
and, Scotty and I will be having a mini-hackfest in Minneapolis the weekend of June 16th
10:20
laprag: hmm, got a particular book in mind?
10:21
<laprag>
too busy to get any work done?
10:21* ogra is really sad ...
10:21
<laprag>
jammcq: Hidden Assassins is the last
10:21
<jammcq>
laprag: all the while, trying to get lots of work done
10:21* ogra had expected a lot more from nfs4
10:21
<laprag>
I'm only a third into it
10:21nf1 has quit IRC
10:22
<laprag>
ogra: are you getting longer boot times?
10:22
<ogra>
yeah, slightly
10:22
<laprag>
is that feisty?
10:22
<ogra>
i had expected a performance increse by switchig to v4
10:22
yep
10:22
well, half way gutsy already :)
10:22nf1 has joined #ltsp
10:23
<laprag>
hmm
10:24
<ogra>
it took me 1 1/2 days to get the initramfs in shape ... and its great to have an encrypted filesystem ... but the speed doesnt convince to make it a default ...
10:26
<mistik1>
jammcq: Hey, ever hear of anyone hacking Xorg to change the default grey screen to an image or some other color
10:26
<ogra>
mistik1, ubuntu and redhat have patches for that
10:26
<jammcq>
mistik1: dunno why anyone would want to do that
10:26
<mistik1>
hehe
10:27
<cliebow>
hehe
10:27
<mistik1>
jammcq: To not see the ugly grey screen
10:27
ogra: got a link anywhere?
10:27
<jammcq>
if you are seeing an ugly grey screen, you have a problem
10:28
<mistik1>
jammcq: Not for ltsp bro
10:28
<cliebow>
be happy!!
10:29
<mistik1>
There are some things I do for which I dont use a wm at all and setting a background image takes an extra step I dont need
10:30
<ogra>
-br create root window with black background
10:30
from Xorg -h
10:30
i *think* thats even upstream and not a patch anymore
10:31
ldm uses it to avoid the grey screen
10:33
<jammcq>
ah
10:33
<ogra>
Apr 22 17:33:07 edubuntu kernel: [319532.180000] nfs4_cb: server 127.0.0.1/192.168.100.253 AUTH_UNIX 0 not responding, timed out
10:33
aha
10:34
so it might be possible to have it faster :)

jarhed: if you need help, you really need to ask your question
11:10
<cliebow>
jrahed: gaining?
11:14
<jarhed>
k...can't get any client to login. I've installed an ubuntu version with ltsp and the edubuntu version
11:14
both download the images and startup to the X, then I lose the signal to the monitor
11:15
<jammcq>
sounds like X is over-driving the monitor
11:15
can you try a different monitor?
11:15
<jarhed>
yes
11:15
i've set XSERVER=vesa,
11:15freemind has quit IRC
11:15
<jarhed>
its a cirrus 1MB onboard
11:15
<ogra>
that wont work
11:15
<jammcq>
that's just the driver to use. that doesn't effect the frequency
11:16
<ogra>
1M isnt enough
11:16
<jarhed>
but I also can't with a vmware instance
11:16
so there ARE minimum requirements
11:16
<ogra>
you will need to set X_COLOR_DEPTH=8 or so to make an 1M card work at all
11:16
<jarhed>
I;ve set that also
11:17
<jammcq>
the old cirrus logic cards are a real problem
11:17
<ogra>
sure there are minimum reqs :)
11:17
<jarhed>
ok...well if that's the case, I'm not crazy :)
11:17
<ogra>
48M ram and at least 200Mhz for clients ... 2M garphics card
11:17
<jarhed>
i've read and read and thought I had set every option I could find
11:18FreeBPX999__ has joined #ltsp

but I've read some old P1 systems would work ... is that a different setup?
11:18
<ogra>
no
11:19
you might even get 486 systems to work with enough ram and patience :)
11:19
lots of patience ...
11:19
lots and lots of patience ... ;)
11:19
<jarhed>
patience I have, it's the lack of knowledge that's killing me

yes, huge difference
11:20
<jarhed>
is there somewhere that I could find more documentation for 5?
11:21

11:21
<jammcq>
no, the workbook thing
11:21
is that up on the wiki now?
11:21
<ogra>
jammcq, thats the edubuntu handbook, included in edubuntu
11:21
<jammcq>
ok, maybe that'll help him
11:21
<ogra>
no idea if thats anywhere online

i know there is a svn for te contributors ... but i dont know if its exported to html or so
11:22
<jammcq>
what format is it?
11:22

i only get he finished sourcepackage, sign and upload it :)
11:22

11:22

docbook ?
11:22

its yelp documentation
11:23
i guess so
11:23
ask scottie
11:23
<jammcq>
I would, if he were here. maybe i'll call him. need to talk with him anyway
11:23
<ogra>
i only know the other side of things where the stuff comes out ;)
11:23
he's on te input side
11:27
<jarhed>
any suggestions for the cirrus card?
11:28freemind has joined #ltsp
11:29
<ogra>
not really
11:29
1M is just not enough
11:31
<jarhed>
ok
11:31
drats
11:31
<jammcq>
it's enough for 800x600 16-bit
11:32
<jarhed>
i'd like to solve the X display,,even if it's really lousy display
11:32
<jammcq>
ogra: does ltsp-5 support X_MODE_0 = 800x600 ?
11:32
<ogra>
jarhed, can you boot to console ?
11:32
jammcq, you know it doesnt
11:32
we discussed it pretty often before
11:32
<jarhed>
if I kill the X, is see the terminal and yes I can log in
11:32
<jammcq>
yeah, but my memory ain't what it used to be
11:33
<ogra>
jarhed, check the modelines in /etc/X11/xorg.conf
11:33
do they start with 1024x786 ?
11:33
<jarhed>
as for setting it to boot to console ... I have to find how to do that with the startup stuff / I knew how with inittab
11:34
<ogra>
SCREEN_xx=shell gives you a console ... nothing changed there
11:34FreeBPX999_ has quit IRC
11:34
<jarhed>
setting it now...
11:35
i've read that you can specify a X file in lts.conf, would that work?
11:35
<ogra>
yes, thats why we look at the existing one ;)
11:35
so do your modelines have 1024 entries ?
11:35
<jarhed>
yes
11:35
higher also
11:36
<ogra>
remove them ... the higher ones as well
11:36
<jarhed>
default is 24
11:36
<ogra>
leave 800x600 and downwards in place
11:36
change the depth to 16
11:36
<jarhed>
and i am assuming your talking about the xorg.conf in the opt/... dir
11:36
<ogra>
save the file and try to run /etc/init.d/ltsp-client start
11:37
i'm talking about the xorg.conf you see on tty1 on te client
11:37
i'm not talking about anything on the server
11:37
<jarhed>
ok
11:38
<ogra>
if you ge a login screeen with the above, scp the xorg.conf to the server ... save it in /opt/ltsp/i386/etc/xorg.conf-custom and add /etc/xorg.conf-custom to te lts.conf
11:39
<jarhed>
sorry ...it's coming up slowwwwly

11:51
just to clarify. .. the root passwd is set IN the client
11:51
but the accounts are ON the server?
11:51
<ogra>
yes
11:51
<jarhed>
so I should have been able to log in with a student account
11:52
<ogra>
on the server, yes
11:52
the chroot hsa o accounts at all
11:52
*has
11:52
*has no
11:54
<jarhed>
ok i see 2 xorg.conf
11:54
xorg.conf and xorg.conf.20070422124837
11:54
<ogra>
xorg.conf is the one you want to edit
11:55
<jarhed>
that one has identified the cirrus video card
11:55
<ogra>
right
11:55
check the modelines and color depth
11:58
<jarhed>
color depth was 24 - changed it to 16
11:59
mode lines are 1024 and down
11:59
<ogra>
drop the 1024x786 from there
11:59
then run the ltsp-client initscript
11:59
<jarhed>
on the client?
12:00
<ogra>
ideed
12:03
<jarhed>
ok I've edited and saved the file
12:03
what should my options for the aspire be in lts.conf
12:03
i've used XSERVER / X_MODE / and DEPTH
12:04
delete em?
12:04
<ogra>
doesnt matter with a fixed config
12:04
as soon as you set XF86CONFIG_FILE they will be ignored
12:05
<jarhed>
so XFCONFIG_FILE=/etc/xorg.cong_aspire
12:05
?
12:05
<ogra>
if oyu saved it like that, yes
12:05
<jarhed>
gotcha
12:05
<ogra>
just make sure to scp it to the server
12:05
and copy it over ito /opt/ltsp
12:06
<jarhed>
yes and yes
12:07
i don't see that command
12:07
<ogra>
/etc/init.d/ltsp-client ....
12:07
run it with the start option
12:08
(thats the piece that writes "Staring LTSP client ..." on your screen
12:08
)
12:08
<jarhed>
off she goes [thanks]

nope
12:10
i ran the init script / it came back to the prompt and then lost the signal to the monitor
12:10
should I cycle it?
12:11
<ogra>
hmm, can you ge back to tty1 ? /var/log/Xorg.0.log should have soe ifo

<jarhed>
whopping 32
12:19
i know i know ...
12:21
the other problem I had was not being able to get passed the login prompt on the vmware instance
12:21
<cliebow>
jarhed:it is just ttoo challenged at 32 meg to run ltsp5
12:22

ok ..

that's what I have been realizing thanks to you guys

i thought it could work

<cliebow>
even ltsp4.2 will kill x at 32 meg agfter a while..
12:25
<jarhed>
but why would it not allow a login past the login greeter [could user/passwd]
12:25
err. good user/passwd
12:25
<cliebow>
33 meg would work though 8`)
12:26
im not sure..
12:26
<jarhed>
well this one has 512 w a 64MB NVidia card
12:26
i get the login screen ...enter info ... login screen again
12:26

12:27

how does that work?

12:35

i was a alittle syrprised..i thought the nvg card would balk
12:36
<jarhed>
but looking at the aspire it looks like its still using the olc xorg.conf
12:36
well it's the first time I booted that box
12:36
i have a slew of other's
12:36
where can i find a complete list of supported options for lts.conf for 5?
12:37
<cliebow>
jarhed:if you are s tuck with the older machines you might try 4.2/...
12:37
jarhed didnt we find it in /opt/ltsp/i386/usr/share/doc/
12:37
<jarhed>
can you run them in parallel
12:37

yes.
12:37
but

you'll have to turn on xdmcp..

16:17
<freemind>
[default]
16:20

<jarhed>
yes
16:25

reat..learned a lot then..
16:25
<jarhed>
the final item was not getting the x file via hostname but via MAC
16:26
<cliebow_>
you missed an a in you nick didnt you/

?

in lts.conf
16:26
<cliebow_>
you nick ought to be jarhead?
16:26
8~)
16:26
<jarhed>
oh ...yeah
16:26
well ...
16:26
<jammcq>
jarhed: you can do it by hostname, if your dhcpd.conf and /etc/hosts file is setup correctly
16:27
check the 'dhcp' page on the ltsp wiki
16:27
<jarhed>
never occured to check the host file as i thought the ip would always change
16:28
but now that u mention it --- makes perfect sense
16:28
<jammcq>
if you have parameters that MUST be tied to a specific workstation, then MAC address is prolly your best choice
16:29
<jarhed>
thanks again ...learned a lot....gonna split
