if I have a .deb I wish to install in my image, then can I simply copy it into /opt/ltsp/amd64, then install it and update image?

I have 8 spare HP laptops along with a spare HP workstation... I was thinking of removing all the hdds from the laptops and intsall ltsp on the workstaion then donate it to my sons school. The tech lady at my sons school doesnt know anything about linux (and im guess only abit about networks). Would this setup need its own seperate network (ip range) to work properly or could it be dropped their network and let the ltsp server pick up a d
14:13
ive only played around with this at work where the ltsp server wasnt plugged into the network, just a switch with the laptops on the rest of the ports.
14:16alexxtasi has left IRC (alexxtasi!~alex@unaffiliated/alexxtasi)
14:18
<mmetzger>
pp20: I think the problem is they'd have to setup a PXE boot config on the normal DHCP server.
14:18
Might be easier to dual NIC the workstation and setup the LTSP side as its own network
14:21mikkel has left IRC (mikkel!~mikkel@93.176.85.50, Quit: Leaving)
14:25
<pp20>
mmetzger: sorry, got caught up... right OK, makes sense. so if i put another nic into the workstation, let the first nic obtain a dhcp address from the school network, then on the second nic (which will be plugged into a switch where the laptops are plugged into) set that up with a seperate ip address range?
14:27
<mmetzger>
pp20: I think that should work. You'll have to setup some IP tables translations for the NAT, and some weird apps may not work if the school is NAT'd as well, but it should do most activities. Then you also don't have to worry about whether the school's physical network is crappy.
14:27
Now whether they'll let you actually plug into the school network is a whole different story.

<ageis>
is there any problem with running LTSP server on a virtual host (specifically Windows Hyper-V)? one would need to forward ports
14:43
<pp20>
mmetzger: thanks dude! it would be a case of i would set the whole thing up, install all the apps i think they would use tuxmaths etc, then donate it and hand it over as it. whether they use it as that or format the lot and install windows will be up to them i guess.
14:44
what i dont wont to do is just format the hdds (which have xp on) then hand them over. they wont have time/resources to get anything up and running.
14:44
<mmetzger>
aegis: I've run it on XenServer in production and on VMWare locally - no port forwarding necessary.
14:44
<pp20>
at least i could present them with a working setup (and be linux :) )
14:46
<mmetzger>
pp20: Agreed - it's a beautiful system. Most of my implementations are fat client ones which is so beautiful to not have to monitor / freeze / update remote systems.
14:48
<pp20>
mmetzger: Im UK based and the school is in a village with really slow internet, at least this way I was thinking get the LTSP rocking on the workstaion, install all the apps and packages they could think of using (found a lot a educational packages they could use) so they dont have to use the internet at all/hardly.
14:49
apps like TuxMaths etc would be perfect for them to use. it can obviolusly be monitored too, forget the app name whereby the server can see all the screens??
14:50
and removing the hard drives from the hp 4400 laptops, means using less power and generating too much heat of course. an added bonus.

sorry to ask (only few mins left at work) can i install latest version of ubuntu, then install ltsp on top? downloads seem to suggest its only available in the 12.04 alternative iso
16:34
iso downloads on ubuntu site i mean
16:34
<vagrantc>
it's available in all versions of ubuntu
16:35
<pp20>
so when doing a fresh install of the latest ubuntu, i can do this?...
16:35
Once you boot up the CD, hit F4. The "Modes" menu will pop up. Select "Install an LTSP Server". Now just move on with the install.
16:35
qoute taken from : https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/LTSPQuickInstall
16:40
<vagrantc>
i'm not sure if the alternate install CD supports LTSP anymore, but you can always install it after-the-fact.
16:42
<ogra_>
there is no alternate install cd anymore ... that might be the bigger blocker :)
16:52
<pp20>
ok, thanks guys! appreciate the help... as always from irc :)

you can install the minimal server and then install the desktop package you want, then the ltsp package

17:07
<JuJuBee>
I've been trying to get virtualbox installed into my image but everything I try leaves me with an error when running VB telling me to run /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup So I do and still get same error...
17:10
<||cw>
JuJuBee: the vboxdrv need to be setup for the same kernel version and arch as the clients run
17:10
so if the server is booted on a different version, or different arch, it'll fail
17:11
<JuJuBee>
My server is amd64 and so is client
17:11
<||cw>
one option is to boot one client in nfs read/write and let it do the work, then you can go back to RO
17:11
<JuJuBee>
RO?
17:12
<||cw>
read only
17:12
<vagrantc>
eeyk.
17:12
<||cw>
vagrantc: is that no longer the way?
17:12* vagrantc wonders why people still use virtualbox
17:12
<||cw>
oh
17:13
<vagrantc>
it seems to require some ugly hacks just to get it to do simple things
17:13
<JuJuBee>
vagrantc: what should I use... I want the students to be able to install/reinstall windows/linux to play with different OS's
17:14
<vagrantc>
i guess i'm just stuck on qemu (with kvm support) and virt-manager ... but basically anything that uses qemu/kvm
17:15
i guess it requires virtualization capable hardware and a linux host...
17:15
<JuJuBee>
I have fairly new hardware (less than 2 years) and use linux hosts
17:16
<vagrantc>
well, give it a try :)
