<ageis>
im noticing that people are using NFS instead of NBD now. is that better?
08:53
<alkisg>
How are you noticing that?
08:54
I think people are mostly using NBD...
08:55
<ageis>
in LTSP 5.5. the built-image all gives NFS as default in pxelinux.cfg/default
08:55
<alkisg>
In what distribution/version?
08:55
The default depends on the distribution, not on the ltsp version
08:55
<ageis>
debian jessie
08:55
<alkisg>
Right, debian defaults to NFS
08:56
Ubuntu defaults to NBD
08:56
And, some debian users switch to NBD too...
08:56
<ageis>
i havent been able to get nbd working on either debian or jessie though. constantly "cannot connect to NBD server" errors. have tried so much. but NFS works nice so I think I might do that
08:57
<alkisg>
If you want to troubleshoot it, ask. If you want to choose NFS, do so. Compressed NBD is about 5 times faster than plain NFS, but for thin clients, that mostly affects boot times only.
08:57
NBD mostly matters for ltsp fat clients, not for thins
08:58
<ageis>
we were using nbd for thins. I've been troubleshooting for 24 hours straight. I've posted some of my configs and asked for help.
08:58
if you want, take a look: https://gist.github.com/ageis/ca7cbfa1b78523d7316a (these have been tweaked in many ways)
08:59
<alkisg>
If you want to solve it, I suggest a shared vnc session, it will take 5 minutes, as opposed to 50 minutes of reading online logs...
08:59
!vnc
08:59
<ltsp>
I do not know about 'vnc', but I do know about these similar topics: 'x11vnc', 'kvm-vnc', 'vnc-plinet'
09:00
<ageis>
I run x11vnc persistently, but it's password protected, and I'd rather not give a stranger access to my desktop.
09:00
I can let you observe while I demonstrate.
09:01
<alkisg>
!learn vnc-alkisg as To share your screen with me, run this: sudo apt-get --yes install x11vnc; x11vnc -connect alkisg.no-ip.org This is a reverse connection, it doesn't need port forwarding etc.
09:01
<ltsp>
The operation succeeded.
09:01
<ageis>
alkisg, I don't need this helpp, I already know the commands.
09:01
ok so
09:01
<alkisg>
ageis: No worries, I don't mind
09:01
<ageis>
this will share my screen, but no control?
09:01
for you?
09:01
<alkisg>
I'm just helping daily 10+ teachers here, and that's the fastest thing for help
09:01
No that's with control
09:02
You'd need a -viewonly for view only
09:02
But your configuration is a lot screwed up
09:02
So, it will need much time to tell you what to run, what to fix, to give commands, to give feedback etc
09:02
<ageis>
I'd prefer viewonly, but I'll show you everything and maybe if you have any ideas we can go from there.
09:03
<alkisg>
Sorry, I don't have that much time
09:03
Btw I'm an LTSP developer, if it helps your feelings
09:03
<ageis>
you jsut offered. you're saying you don't have enough time unless you have input access/
09:03
<alkisg>
Yes
09:03
<ageis>
lol
09:04
<alkisg>
I do have 5 minutes, but not 50
09:04
I'm sorry, but I do that 10 times a day, I really know what I'm talking about
09:04
Anyway, good luck :)
09:04
<ageis>
yes, I'd appreciate your help. let's start in 1 min, i have to tidy something.
09:06
<alkisg>
ageis: let's start by stating your goals. I suggest: dnsmasq in proxydhcp mode, no tftpd-hpa, and nbd
09:06
dnsmasq will do the tftp too
09:06
And, tftp in /var/lib/tftpboot, not in /srv/tftp
09:06
<ageis>
I have dnsmasq in proxydhcp, i have tftpd-hpa (what's wrong with that, you'd rather use dnsmasq for it?) and i use nbd-server
09:07
<alkisg>
Because those are the defaults for ltsp-config
09:07
ltsp-config dnsmasq --overwrite will give you a clean configuration, and ltsp-config nbd too
09:07
<ageis>
oh ok.. i can move that, had been using /srv/tftp
09:07
<alkisg>
No need to diverge from the defaults for no specific reason
09:08
Give me a root shell somewhere, and you'll see the history of the commands afterwards for your internal documentation of what we did
09:08
<ageis>
yeah, have done those
09:08
<alkisg>
OK, give the vnc command as stated above ^ when you're ready
09:10
<ageis>
yup
09:14
<alkisg>
ageis: are you using amd64 or i386 for the chroot?
09:15
<ageis>
i386
09:16
thanks for backing up stuff
09:17
will dnsmasq now take over the tftp? tftp-hpa is still running.
09:17
oh lol
09:17
right as you do that
09:17
damn you a pro :)
09:18
i had those inetd.conf things commented out before... but I'd been trying both inetd and nbd-server to see if either would work
09:20
can you check my lts.conf too
09:21
thats alternately been /opt/ltsp/i386 or ltsp_i386
09:23
also check my ltsp-update-images.conf plz
09:25
sorry about that. it works after a reboot sometimes.
09:27
<alkisg>
Where do you see the dnsmasq logs?
09:27
We'll chech ltsp-update-image.conf after it boots...
09:27
<ageis>
dont think there are any..
09:27
hm
09:27
<alkisg>
The ltsp_i386 was a temporary thing only for 12.04, the proper is /opt/ltsp/i386
09:27
In ubuntu, I have /var/log/syslog, I have daemon.log etc
09:27
You have those too in Jessie, but why are they empty? It's already switched to systemd?
09:28
Vbox works much better with the extension pack and the intel nic
09:28
<ageis>
i think I turned some of em off.
09:28
let me check
09:29
anything look missing here?
09:29
extension pack i.e. guest addons? I was told this particular card was best for PXE
09:30
im down to switch the virtual interface tho
09:31
oh there ya go
09:31
try restarting vm completely
09:32
<alkisg>
ageis: you try it
09:32
Somehow the mouse doesn't behave well for me
09:32
(12:29:31 μμ) ageis: extension pack i.e. guest addons? I was told this particular card was best for PXE => no, guest addons are a different thing
09:32
<ageis>
heh yea i try to jump in quick but its no good fighting over mouse
09:32
<alkisg>
extension pack is firmware for intel nics, for pxe
09:33
<ageis>
so these intel ones will work fine ?
09:33
<alkisg>
http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/4.3.12/
09:33
They won't work at all, unless (1) you use ipxe.iso, or (2) install the extension pack
09:33
Let's go for (2)
09:34
Sorry
09:34
I shouldn't even try to use the mouse :D
09:34
Check your virtualbox version
09:34
<ageis>
its the latest
09:34
fully updated
09:34
<alkisg>
Specifically?
09:34
Tell me number
09:34
<ageis>
4.3.12 r93733
09:35
now how do you load the pack?
09:35
oh i got it
09:35
<alkisg>
http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/4.3.12/Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-4.3.12-93733.vbox-extpack
09:35
Either let the browser open it, or via vbox
09:35Grembler has joined IRC (Grembler!~Ben@cpc29-aztw22-2-0-cust128.18-1.cable.virginm.net)
09:35
<ageis>
installed
09:35
now what?
09:35
<alkisg>
OK, try with the intel nic
09:36
And let's see the dnsmasq logs too
09:37
<ageis>
i dont think we setup dnsmasq for tftp did we?
09:37
or we did...
09:39
dont i need nbdroot and nbdproxy=false and nbdport in my default file?
09:39
that ties into the ltsp-update-image.conf which we'll get to.
09:41
<alkisg>
The problem is that dnsmasq doesn't hook :69 for tftp, while it should
09:41
ageis: do you have anything like eg. a firewall or some custom configuration against that?
09:41
<ageis>
nope not at all
09:41
tftp-hda was working fine
09:42
ha there it is
09:43
extra running dnsmasq process, knew it
09:44
there we go...
09:45
<alkisg>
ageis: see why I don't want to use IRC for such messed up setups? :D
09:45
<ageis>
now this looks like my /etc/nbd-client within hte image, right?
09:45
<alkisg>
Missing /etc/dnsmasq.d/README made the service not start, without any messages...
09:45
<ageis>
oh weird you cant delete a readme
09:46
<alkisg>
!nbd-client
09:46
<ltsp>
nbd-client: To try mounting the NBD image from the client initramfs: nbd-client 192.168.67.1 -N /opt/ltsp/i386 /dev/nbd0
09:47mikkel has left IRC (mikkel!~mikkel@mail.dlvs.dk, Quit: Leaving)
09:49
<ageis>
sorry
09:49
one sec
09:50
i just switched the vm to 64-bit
09:50
<alkisg>
No need
09:50
The problem was that you created nbd-server.allow
09:50
<ageis>
oh? but it had all the appropriate ips in it...
09:51
nbdroot and nbdport are not set in default atm
09:51
<alkisg>
ageis: switch the vm back to 32 bit
09:51
There's no need for nbdroot nor for nbdport
09:51
<ageis>
i see
09:52
curious about this /sbin/init-ltsp thing
09:54
<alkisg>
Ah ok now the problem is that you have an older ltsp version, from 12.04
09:54
I think that one does need nbdroot, let me check...
09:54
<ageis>
older ltsp within the image right?
09:54
<alkisg>
ageis: btw, why 12.04 for the chroot?
09:54
Yes
09:55
<ageis>
alkisg: the actual host is actually 12.04 too, im just testing this at home for the moment :P
09:55
<alkisg>
Haha... so you're testing switching from nfs to nbd, while the actual server already has nbd? :D
09:55
<ageis>
no haven't been able to get this work here or there
09:55
im gonna have to copy the stuff you did over to there
09:56
<alkisg>
Mainly, I reverted your own configuration, back to the ltsp defaults...
09:56
Let me see what was needed after 12.04 to avoid the server's ip in the command line...
09:56
<ageis>
i was getting far before. Ubuntu splash screen, etc.
09:57
then it would dump to Cannot connect to NBD server
09:57
and busybox
09:57cyberorg has joined IRC (cyberorg!~cyberorg@opensuse/member/Cyberorg)
09:57
<alkisg>
The splash screen is the same, ie it comes from the initramfs
09:57
It didn't get further
09:57
Now nbd works, and you only have a command -line issue
09:57
<ageis>
oh ok
09:57
so its just cause quiet and splash is off
09:57
<alkisg>
Yup
09:57
<ageis>
makes sense
09:58
i have to say you're quite a pro, and I thought I was a pretty good sysadmin
09:58
<alkisg>
You are!
09:58
I'm not a sysadmin, I'm a windows programmer :P :D
09:58
Haha
09:59
OK let me check the cmdline
09:59
<ageis>
i had all these before append ro initrd=initrd.img root=/dev/nbd0 init=/sbin/init-ltsp plymouth:force-splash vt.handoff=7 autoconf=dhcp nbdport=2000 nbdroot=192.168.1.2:ltsp_i386
10:00
i tried nbdport=192.168.1.2:2000 even
10:00
that seems to work sometimes
10:00
but im missing that init-ltsp thing
10:01
btw is NBD_TYPE=f or r
10:01
(/etc/nbd-client) in image
10:02
Unterminated quote string

<alkisg>
Err ok that nbd-client configuration file isn't used
10:05
<ageis>
alright
10:05
<alkisg>
But, what about the syntax error? Have you changed any files in the chroot, after that last time that you run ltsp-update-kernels?
10:05
<ageis>
there was an ltsp-nbd script in initramfs-tools/scripts before but it's gone now
10:06
i'm inclined to chroot in, update the initramfs, then ltsp-update-kernels
10:06
<alkisg>
Because now I only pasted 5 lines from upstream, to udhcp, and it produced a syntax error, which wasn't supposed to happen...
10:06
No, don't
10:06
<ageis>
ok
10:07
oh im looking at the bash code for init-ltsp
10:11
ah now the other thing I wanted you to look at ?
10:12
no modifications to init-ltsp, md5sum is same from ubuntu precise's pkg
10:12
<alkisg>
ageis: the problem was in lts.conf, you had an extra " there
10:12
<ageis>
alkisg: hoorah!
10:12
<alkisg>
:)
10:12
<ageis>
alkisg: thank you for the expert help
10:13
<alkisg>
ageis: oh well, it took 1 hour
10:13
Too many issues, we'd need many many hours over plain irc
10:13* alkisg closes vnc...
10:14
<alkisg>
Ah, we didn't look ltsp-update-kernels, keep your pxelinux.cfg/ltsp in backups
10:14
So as to restore it if ltsp-update-kernels breaks it due to messed up configuration
10:14
<ageis>
ok
10:14
<alkisg>
So, starting from plain 12.04, you would only need nbdroot, or the patch to udhcp that I applied, nothing more
10:15
The rest was just undoing changes...
10:15
<ageis>
and copying the dnsmasq config too
10:15
or just doing that with ltsp-config ? no customizations?
10:16
and what's the patch to udhcp?
10:16
<alkisg>
Just ltsp-config dnsmasq --overwrite
10:16
Diff the udhcp from backups/, with the modified one
10:17
About ltsp-confid dnsmasq, you might need to change amd64 to i386 if you're using amd64 server and i386 client in the production environment too
10:17
<ageis>
gotcha
10:18
that is gonna be the case :) only the kernel will be amd64 but rest of server os is i386
10:20
what was wrong with authfile=allow ?
10:21
<alkisg>
No idea, I just reverted to the defaults
10:21
Btw, some nbd-server versions did have problems parsing the auth file
10:21
I filed a bug about it, it was solved, but I don't remember in which nbd version
10:21
So that's why the default in ltsp still is not to use an auth file
10:22
<ageis>
so its totally fine to just leave authfile blank then?
10:22
<alkisg>
Try the changes you want with baby steps, so that you see which one breaks it :)
10:23
I think blank authfile will mean "no clients are authorized"
10:23
While, non-existing authfile means "all clients are authorized"
10:23
Try it
10:23
The bug I mentioned was wrong parsing, i.e. nothing worked wrt authentication
10:23
<ageis>
does lts.conf have to exist both in tftpboot and in ./tftpboot/ltsp/i386 or just the latter?
10:23
sure thing
10:24
<alkisg>
Just the latter
10:24
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=676678
10:24
That's the bug ^
10:24
<ageis>
okay :)
10:24
okay last Q is in my query, look at that config and let me know if theres extra options...
10:29
heh, the ltsp-config cmd apparently doesn't work in 5.3
10:29
er doesn't exist
10:30
alkisg: you think the trusty ltsp-server packages would work on precise?
10:32

10:33
<ageis>
thats awesome!
10:33
thank ye
10:33

I think actually most precise users are using that, instead of the ubuntu one...

Hi! I'm struggling with quad screen setup with nvidia driver (basemosaic) on ubuntu 14.04. It seems that I could do everything within lts.conf. Saves me from updating the thin-client image every time I'm testing new xorg.conf file. But the documentation is vague. Does anyone have a example?
