<ltspuser_69>
HI
11:43
I need some help
11:43
I need to install nvidia drivers on the chroot
11:43
What I need to do?
11:44
the first obstacle is that I have different kernels on Ubuntu machine and on chroot that Ubuntu provides...
11:44
I don't know why
11:45
<Hyperbyte>
ltspuser_69, ltsp-build-client builds a 32-bit kernel by default on most Ubuntu versions, because many thin clients don't support 64-bit
11:46
<ltspuser_69>
and when I try to install nvidia-current package it says that I don't have the modules for that kernel in /lib(modules because the system is detecting kernel 3.2.0-26-generic-pae and on the chroot I have 3.2.0-32-generic
11:46
<Hyperbyte>
If your clients do support 64-bit, you could rebuild the chroot by rm -rf'ing /opt/ltsp/i386/ and doing ltsp-build-client --arch=amd64 (if memory serves)
11:47
<ltspuser_69>
The performance gets better?
11:47
<Hyperbyte>
Are you using thin or fat clients?
11:47
<ltspuser_69>
thin
11:47
<Hyperbyte>
Then it probably won't matter much.
11:48
If you're using thin clients, I'd say it's better to use 32-bit, because you'll support a much wider range of clients, rather than just the ones with 64-bit capable CPU's.
11:48
<ltspuser_69>
ok
11:49
<Hyperbyte>
Thin clients run most of their stuff on the server anyways, so the performance boost 64-bit could give you, is neglible anyways.
11:49
<ltspuser_69>
but What I need to do to install the nvidia drivers?
11:49vmlintu has left IRC (vmlintu!~vmlintu@59ec6c11.adsl.tnnet.fi, Ping timeout: 250 seconds)
11:50
<Hyperbyte>
Honestly, I have no idea. Someone else will though, hang around in here for a few hours. :)
11:51
What steps are you taking to install the drivers?
11:53
<ltspuser_69>
I just install the nvidia-current
11:53
<Hyperbyte>
Be specific
11:53
<ltspuser_69>
but the difference of the kernel produces an error
11:53
<Hyperbyte>
Which commands are you typing at the command line?
11:54
And pastebin the exact error, or even better, the whole terminal output (including the commands you ran)
11:54
!pastebin
11:54
<ltsp>
pastebin: the LTSP pastebin is at http://ltsp.pastebin.com. Please paste all text longer than a line or two to the pastebin, as it helps to reduce traffic in the channel. Don't forget to paste the URL of the text here.
11:54
<ltspuser_69>
because I make a chroot to the filesystem but if I do a command uname -r it shows the kernel of Ubuntu
11:55
sorry but I don't have the error on this console...
11:55
but what's the procedure to install drivers on the chroot?
11:57
<muppis>
It's little tricky, I think, get it working in 32 bit client to due the kernel name difference. You can try fool installer by making little uname bash script which always returns corrected name for kernel.
11:59
<ltspuser_69>
yes :P
12:00
I will try
12:00
thank you

Hi
14:16
I have a question
14:17
if I in file /etc/nbd-server/conf.d/ltsp_i386.conf readonly= false
14:18
I can run a terminal and install some packages and this chages will be replicated to the chroot provided??
14:24
do I need to run some command to update the chroot image?

<||cw>
i guess technically that would work, as long as there's only one client on the image
14:30
though, why not just chroot and install from the server?
14:30
then rebuild the image?
14:30
<ltspuser_65>
because the chroot has a different kernel
14:31
and to install nvidia drivers I need to change uname and other things...

14:31
<ltspuser_65>
it's easier if I do all the things on the terminal
14:32
But I didi everything and then when I reboot the terminal it gaves an error and the chroot didn't change
14:32
is there any command that I need to run?
14:32
like the ltsp-update-image but from the terminal side?
14:41
<||cw>
ah. yeah those get tricky
14:41
I think there's some guides on installing and setting up an auto-config for nvidia and ati at the same time
14:42
assuming readonly= false does what it implies (I don't really now) then just doing it form the client should set it in the image.
14:42
but I don't think it's recomended to do that, since next time you ltsp-update-image it'll blow away your chages

Hi
18:40
I'm trying to install cups in a chroot and it won't start
18:41
I don«t undertand one thing... If I go to the directory /opt/ltsp/i386/etc/init.d/
18:41
the cups service exists
18:41
but after a run in a terminal...
18:41
the service do not exist
18:42
I need this service because I changed the Firefox to run locally on the terminal and If I want to print, or see a pdf or do something I need to have all those things on the terminal too right?
18:42
<||cw>
did you run ltsp_update_image?
18:45
<ltspuser_44>
yes
18:45
all the other things are on the image
18:48
I don't understand
18:49
<||cw>
so ther file is there, but the service won't start?
18:49
<ltspuser_44>
no
18:50
the file is on the server... but on the terminal doesn't appear
18:50
and the service don't start
18:50
<||cw>
thenthe image isn't udpated. did you reboot the client?
18:50
<ltspuser_44>
but can I put firefox running locally and using all the apps from the server?
18:50
yes
18:51
I have made many operations and all of them were successfull
18:51
but cups didn't work
18:51
<vagrantc>
some services get removed on boot.
18:52
cups may be one of them.
18:52
<ltspuser_44>
do I need to add cups service on some startup file or something?
18:52
<vagrantc>
at least with recent versions of LTSP
18:52
<ltspuser_44>
and how can I put cups booting?
18:55
<vagrantc>
i forgot how exactly...
18:56
you can add it to KEEP_SYSTEM_SERVICES in lts.conf, but i think there's a better way to do it.
18:57
ltspuser_44: what version of LTSP are you running? what distro and version?
18:58
<ltspuser_44>
ii ltsp-server 5.3.7-0ubuntu2.2 Basic LTSP server environment ii ltsp-server-standalone 5.3.7-0ubuntu2.2 Complete LTSP server environment ii ltspfs 1.1-2 Fuse based remote filesystem for LTSP thin clients ii ltspfsd 1.1-2
18:59
<vagrantc>
ltspuser_44: could you paste the output of ltsp-info to a pastebin?

18:59
<ltspuser_44>
how can I add it on keep system services?
19:00
I downloaded the last one
19:00
I'm using ubuntu 12.04
19:02
<vagrantc>
ltspuser_44: does /etc/cups exist on the thin client?
19:03
<ltspuser_44>
yes
19:03
<vagrantc>
ltspuser_44: and you're running firefox as a localapp?
19:03
<ltspuser_44>
yes
19:04
how can I put cups in KEEP_SYSTEM_SERVICES?
19:04
<vagrantc>
ltspuser_44: does /etc/cups/client.conf exist?
19:05
<ltspuser_44>
yes
19:05
<vagrantc>
ltspuser_44: does it point to your server?
19:05
this is on a booted thin client, yes?
19:05
<ltspuser_44>
it points to the ldm server...
19:06
<vagrantc>
ltspuser_44: adding it to KEEP_SYSTEM_SERVICES isn't necessarily the right thing to do, but you'd add it to lts.conf
19:06
<ltspuser_44>
yes
19:06
<vagrantc>
ltspuser_44: is cups configured on your ldm server?
19:06
<ltspuser_44>
but how??
19:06
yes but I need to use it locally
19:06
right??
19:06
so the firefox have access to printers
19:06
<vagrantc>
you have a printer connected directly to the thin client?
19:07
it should be configured to use the server's cups instance
19:07
which it sounds like it is...
19:07
<ltspuser_44>
no
19:07
I have network printers...
19:07
<vagrantc>
it's been a long time since i've mucked with local printing...
19:08
<ltspuser_44>
I understand
19:08
<vagrantc>
ltspuser_44: so no printers show up in firefox?
19:08
<ltspuser_44>
but you know the line to put in lts.conf
19:08
in keep_system_services
19:08
?
19:08
no...
19:08
<vagrantc>
ltspuser_44: i'm trying to get it working the way it's suppose to work.
19:08
<ltspuser_44>
if I run firefox on the server the printers appears
19:08
ok
19:09
<vagrantc>
i'm not *sure* that adding it to KEEP_SYSTEM_SERVICES is the right thing to do, but edit (or create) /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/lts.conf
19:09
in the [default] section, add:
19:09
<ltspuser_44>
yes
19:09
and add which line
19:09
<vagrantc>
KEEP_SYSTEM_SERVICES="cups"
19:09
if that works, then i guess we're good.
19:10
<ltspuser_44>
ok
19:10
I will try
19:10
thks ;)
