<jvin>
alkisg, I agree ltsp is more than X, but I remember having a lot of fiddling with X at times when I was working with it more regularly ~2005/6. I figured that ltsp would be involved closely with whatever new solution that was replacing X.
00:21
and probably already seeing what's on the horizon a lot earlier than everyone else .. so thought I'd ask.

Case study... epoptes is asking thin client to send screen thumbnails to the teacher.
21:34
We experienced rare crashes under heavy load, and were trying to troubleshoot it for a couple of days now.
21:34
It turns out that it was asking the whole screen from the X server (=LTSP client) to the X client (=LTSP server) and *then* it did the resize operation.
21:34
On extreme load, with video playing + iperf stressing the network, that sometimes took even more than 10 secs, as opposed to the usual few msec!
21:34
We'll switch to using pixmaps to do x-server-side scaling with cairo, but it was educating to see why thin clients crawl when xvideo plays, even if the video itself plays fine.
21:35* vagrantc waves to alkisg
21:35
<alkisg>
Hey
21:42* alkisg is dizzy after 2 days of trying to troubleshoot python/amp/network related problems, to find out it was just X taking toooooo long over the network :)
21:45* vagrantc hasn't had a chance to test ssvnc
21:46
<alkisg>
For the next adventure, I'd like to try gstreamer for screen grabbing as a video stream, and then multicasting, either with gstreamer or vlc
21:46
If we can do that, we'll be able to show descent FPS on even 100mbps lans
21:47
Not for video broadcasting; just for teacher screen broadcasting. Ximagesrc: http://gstreamer.freedesktop.org/data/doc/gstreamer/head/gst-plugins-good-plugins/html/gst-plugins-good-plugins-ximagesrc.html
21:48
<vagrantc>
libnss-sshsock only seems to work with UIDs/GIDs above 500 ... not sure how we'll plug it into LDM or lightdm or whatever ... and how will we get the groups a person is a member of
21:49
<alkisg>
vagrantc: aren't the low-level GIDs supposed to be created by the system?
21:49
E.g. for access to sockets and stuff? If they don't already exist in the client, what good would it do to create them?
21:50
E.g. if I'm a member of vboxusers, why would I want to get that on a thin client if I don't have vbox installed + the group already there?
21:50
<vagrantc>
alkisg: you'll have inconsistant group info for sshfs and maybe NFS mounts, then.
21:50
and if you do install the group locally, the user won't be a member of it.
21:51
<alkisg>
True. I wonder if those support sockets though
21:51
<vagrantc>
so we're close ... just need to keep scotty excited to keep cranking on it :)
21:51
i haven't been very sucessful using libpam-sshauth either :(
21:52
i should've uploaded that to experimental, too.
21:52
<alkisg>
Gadi said that he got it working?
21:53
<vagrantc>
dunno. i just don't quite understand how to set it up, given the docs.

vagrantc: I'm pondering rewritting the "screenshot" tool in C... that would mean we'd have compiled code, different .debs for different architectures etc... is that bad somehow?
22:17
<vagrantc>
alkisg: only a little

vagrantc: I'm tempted to switch to C.... ^
22:47
<matrix3000>
alkisg: about that z stuff i was doing
22:47
now have all thin clients running the main part on themselves, taking load off the main server

<alkisg>
Phiew. Finally managed to do x-server-side scaling, in python, in 0.07 secs, not bad, not worth the C switch
23:57
<vagrantc>
alkisg: well, arch-dependent aren't a big deal
23:57
alkisg: if you did decide to go with C
23:57
<alkisg>
It's 0.02 secs there
23:58
So for a server with 50 clients it would make a difference
23:58
I'll keep the C implementation in case we need it in the future
23:58
For standalone clients it won't make a difference, as it's just 1 thumbnail per 5 seconds
23:58
<vagrantc>
alkisg: could make it possible to use either
23:59
alkisg: and ship both
23:59
<alkisg>
Well if we're going to have C in the package, no need to have python there
23:59
<vagrantc>
in a separate package
23:59
<alkisg>
I think we can switch when we write the whole client in C
23:59
<vagrantc>
makes sense
23:59
<alkisg>
With SSL + reconnections + inside the X session etc
