ltsp is architecture agnoitic isnt it?. i'm thinking about netbooting PCs from a sunblade 150
03:53
PC's=intel based things
03:54
<sep>
Kamping_Kaiser, if you know what your doing that should not be a problem, the chroot that the clients mount as thir root must ofcouse match the clients
03:54
<Kamping_Kaiser>
i should be able to manage that, so thats cool. thanks for the answer :)
03:59
<chsch>
Hi! We are using ltsp with fujitsu siemens A200 thin clients (X driver: fbdev). rdesktop works properly on one screen and kdm appears on the another one. The first problem: after logging in with kdm (fullscreen) the kde session (ubuntu 6.06) does not use the full screen. There is a blue border on the left and bottom of the screen. Any ideas?
03:59meduxa has joined #ltsp
04:00
<chsch>
The second problem: parts of kdm (screen 2) sometimes appear on the rdesktop screen (screen 0) making it unusable.

<markit>
hi, newbie question... is it possible having compriz and all those nice 3D effects with ltsp?
07:02
<sep>
markit, i expect that would require some awsome thin clients with great gfx cards and take a lot of bandwith
07:02
markit, none of my thin clients have gfx chips with 3d capabilities atlest.
07:03
markit, if you use ltsp to run diskless workstations then yes you can use whatever you like
07:03
<markit>
sep: maybe "next generation" will ;) or mini-itx has
07:04
but is the xgl part already included in ltsp?
07:06
<sep>
markit, the new ltsp builds the chroot for the client from the packages of the host system,
07:07
so you should rather check what is in the packages of the ltsp server.
07:07
<markit>
ok, thanks
07:08
wondering how much bandwidth will eating each client

Hello
09:01
Has anyone here done authentication to Active Directory?
09:04RiXtEr has joined #ltsp
09:06
<cliebow_>
Petaris:via winbind..yes
09:07
<Petaris>
cliebow_: I have been using sadms (which uses windbind) but I have been having issues
09:08
<cliebow_>
mine lost its mind once in a while..i had to restart sambahoutlry just to be sure
09:08
<Petaris>
my users logon but sometimes the system will not let them logon again until I delete their local home directory on the server
09:08
its odd
09:08
and annoying
09:09
<cliebow_>
very odd..never had to go there..
09:09
<Petaris>
also, on occasion I will have to reset their password to get it to log them on
09:09
what distro?
09:09
<cliebow_>
recreate the homedir?
09:09sbalneav has joined #ltsp

09:19
<ogra>
https://blueprints.launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+spec/edubuntu-network-auth-server
09:19
<Petaris>
hrm
09:19
Hi ogra
09:19
<ogra>
its *not* the ubuntu-directory-server
09:20
ubuntu will likely build something different here, all we will do is include smbladp by default, its very likely that ubuntu will go a different path
09:21
<Petaris>
ogra: that looks more like using ubuntu as a network auth server
09:21
I was inquiring about authenticating to Active Directory
09:21
<ogra>
there is also a client spec
09:21
<Petaris>
ahh
09:22
<ogra>
https://blueprints.launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+spec/edubuntu-network-auth-client
09:23
<Petaris>
hrm
09:26
that client seems only intended to be used with the edubuntu-auth-server
09:27
or can it also be used to auth against active directory and edirectory
09:28
<ogra>
its the default client that will be used in ubuntu as well, but probably with pam-mount enhancement
09:28
<Petaris>
ok
09:28
but will it be able to auth to AD and eDirectory?
09:29
<ogra>
no idea
09:29
<Petaris>
hrm
09:29
<ogra>
the focus for edubuntu is to atuth against the edubuntu server first place
09:30
<Petaris>
you mean the ltsp clients right?
09:30
<ogra>
no
09:30
<Petaris>
I know that, but I'm talking about the users
09:30
<ogra>
all "client systems"
09:31
<Petaris>
oh
09:31
<ogra>
or lets better say "sessions"
09:32
<Petaris>
but what about user authentication
09:32
is there something then that can be done server side
09:33
that would allow the user auth to stem from either AD or eDirectory?
09:33
there are a lot of orginizations that use one of those two products

<moquist>
Petaris: edubuntu-network-auth-client depends on ajmitch's authtool, which supports AD and LDAP (and I don't remember what else).
09:51
<Petaris>
moquist: ahh, ok
09:52
<moquist>
ogra: BTW, I think edsadmin is basically ready to go except that sorting and searching in the main window are, at best, limited. We need separate columns for first and last names, and they need to be sortable. The entire form should be searchable.
09:53
ogra: I've been working on the sorting but I'm having to learn GTK as I go and I haven't had a breakthrough yet. :\
09:54
<jammcq>
hey, it's O'Quist
09:54
<moquist>
ogra: The problem is that once you have more than, say, 30 users, it becomes a big pain to find people in the list.

hi scotti :)
14:25
jammcq: yeah I built it
14:25
<sbalneav>
So, at what point on the checklist does it fail?
14:26
<bill_c>
sbalneav: works when logged in as root perfectly, but as user, it mounts on device, creates icon on desktop, mounts to server, but user has no permission to access folder
14:26
and neither does root have perms to access when logged in a user
14:26
<sbalneav>
what's the ownership of the fusermount binary?
14:27
<bill_c>
root:root, suid/guid
14:27
<sbalneav>
755?
14:27
<bill_c>
yeah
14:28
<sbalneav>
what version of fuse?
14:28
<bill_c>
2.5.2
14:28
<sbalneav>
What version kernel?
14:28
<bill_c>
2.6.5-7
14:28
<sbalneav>
ok
14:29
what happens if you try to run the command: ltspfs ws00x:/tmp $HOME/foo
14:29
you'll want to do this on an xterm on the terminal, as the user you're logged in as.

14:32
It should be in /usr/bin I beleive.

ahh ok, I'll list the rpm

14:34
cd foo ; ls
14:35
<bill_c>
permission denied to the foo dir
14:35
as user and root
14:36
<sbalneav>
Well, it will be as root
14:36
shouldn't be as user.
14:37
Do you have sshfs installed on the box?
14:37
<bill_c>
no
14:37
<sbalneav>
Sounds to me like your fuse install is broken.
14:38
<bill_c>
what version of fuse you recommend?
14:38
<sbalneav>
2.5 should be fine.
14:39BadMagic has joined #ltsp

<bill_c>
ok I'll try more recent kernel, it works great on some of my other boxes with more current kernel
14:40
<sbalneav>
Did you work through the checklist? What did you get for step 4?
14:40
<bill_c>
yeah, ws240.ltsp
14:41
everything works if I log in as root on the terminal
14:42
but logging out and back in as user, goes through all the motions, I can see it mounted in mount, just no perms for users to access
14:42
I did have some trouble getting fuse to build with 2.6.5 kernel though....

yanu: you want it to automatically log in?
15:37
<yanu>
no, just if user visitor enters with username and passwd, only firefox may come on screen
15:37
i can make a wm-file, but then there will always be the choises of kde, gnome, fvwm ...
15:37
<vagrantc>
without hacking ldm, there's probably no way to do that
15:38
<yanu>
so , we need to hack ldm ...
15:39
hmm, ldm, that's not a script, i suppose ...

another thingy, gnome-menu-editor doesn't seem to exist anymore ...

yanu: it's under preferences, Menu Layout
15:42
<yanu>
hmm , its a python script
15:42

yanu: there might be a better way to disable it, but i think that will work. but if you upgrade the ldm package, your changes will be overwritten.
15:43

<Gadi>
(are yousure it was booted from the correct LTSP server)
