Hello again guys, does anyone know how to disable the LTSP disable the mounting home user feature over SSHFS when users log in (default behavior of LTSP) without adding "NFS_HOME=/home" to lts.conf? I want /home to be mounted through ZFS
11:36
ahh sorry, I wrote wrong, I don't think I was clear, again:
11:37
Hello again guys, does anyone know how to disable LTSP mounting home user dir feature over SSHFS when users log in (default behavior of LTSP) without adding "NFS_HOME=/home" to lts.conf? I want /home to be mounted through ZFS
11:39
I just had an idea, if it works, I will let you all know
11:43
<vagrantc>
if the user's homedir already exists, it doesn't try to mount it over sshfs...
11:43
but how are you mounting ZFS over the network?
11:51
<gchaos>
vagrantc, so, I thought I would be able to mount without NFS, but I guess the best option is to use "sharenfs" ZFS property, so I would still use NFS
11:52
vagrantc, the main reason I want to use ZFS is because of its "deduplication" feature, what would save a good amount of disk space
11:53
<alkisg>
gchaos: zfs is on the server, so it doesn't matter if you use nfs or sshfs to access it
11:53
The deduplication happens on the server, not on the network..
11:53
<gchaos>
and I wasn't sure if it would work via NFS, I am goint to test and report the result
11:53
yes alkisg, it seems so
11:53
<alkisg>
So you can use zfs + the default sshfs just fine
11:53
<gchaos>
alkisg, you are right

yep, it just worked like a charm :D I just had to enable ZFS sharenfs and dedup features :D

<fiesh>
alkisg: also, I was too early with saying nfs4 made things better -- it sucks just as much. I have no idea why nfs is causing so much trouble, I also get tons of "testing state ID with incorrect client ID" in dmesg... it appears the current nfs implementation in linux is just not really stable
15:49
<bcg>
I have few hundreds of ltsp terminals using nfs (v4.1 or 4.2, don't remember) for both root (ro) and home (rw) mounts. It's very stable for me.

<gchaos>
I'm also using nfs4 for rootfs and home in my fat-clients, and haven't got any problem so far
16:30
<alkisg>
bcg: how are you booting over nfs ro? Stock ltsp is using the kernel's overlayfs, which is reported to be unreliable
16:30
gchaos: same ^
16:31
Are you using some custom implementation using bind-mouns or dm mapper or something else?

<bcg>
alkisg: bind-mounts, yes. https://git.launchpad.net/~bcgss/ltsp/+git/ltsp-rhel7/commit/?id=c0851f1afe3f587b0ab39c23484bc6aa0d08327b
19:12
i want to rework it for nbd someday.
19:13
<alkisg>
bcg, yeah we removed bind-mounts support from ltsp...
19:13
<bcg>
redhat branch was so outdated when I started that I'm slowly catching up with debian etc.
19:14
<alkisg>
although I think that's unionfs per directory, not bind-mounts per file
19:15
bind mounts in ltsp had to maintain a list of all the writeable files, which was error-prone
19:15
<bcg>
yes:
19:15
+# unionfs-mount writable directories
19:15
+for dir in /etc /var /root; do
19:15
...
19:15
+# tmpfs-mount other directories. /home should be added to lts.conf as FSTAB_1 line.
19:16
+for dir in /media /mnt; do
19:30
<alkisg>
writeable directories are much more manageable than dozens of writeable files, although unionfs isn't in-kernel like overlayfs
19:31
Aufs over NFS works in Debian as well, yet it's not in-kernel either
19:33
<bcg>
I tried with overlayfs first but that didn't work, just deadlocked.
19:34
I'll retry later. We'll see.
