<TheProf>
Hello and happy new year! I'd like to set up a directory with PDFs and images that all the students using our LTSP server can access simultaneously. I tried creating a folder /home/common and giving it wide open read permissions but it isn't visible to anyone. I'm using both thin and fat clients. How would I set up this common directory please?

<sbalneav>
You'll need at least 755 permissions for read-only access. If you want read-write, there's better ways than just 777
18:22
You'll probably want to create a group with all the students
18:22
chgrp students /home/common
18:22
chmod 2770 /home/common
18:22
need the setgid bit set.

<TheProf>
sbalneav: Hello! I had made the permissions 777 just for testing
18:50
I thought if it works with that I can then proceed to tighten it up but it was not visible.
18:52
sbalneav: I will try out the group and setgid as you recommended. I noticed as a thin client user I thought I can't see anything above my own directory because of how the thin clients are getting an image, etc.
18:56
<sbalneav>
TheProf: It's going to depend entirely how home dirs are shared out
18:56
<vagrantc>
there's a feature to mount extra directories
18:57
LOCAL_APPS_EXTRAMOUNTS=/home/common
