Anybody about who could answer a question about Modifying the Places menu on Ubuntu ltsp ?
09:41
<Hyperbyte>
davew, you need to really just go ahead and ask your question when you want help on IRC.
09:41
But some advice I can give you, since this is not an LTSP related question, is to ask in #ubuntu
09:50alkisg has joined IRC (alkisg!~alkisg@ubuntu/member/alkisg)

Hey Alkis!
09:52
Remember the problem I was having with insanely high CPU usage for Firefox, Thunderbird and ksoftirqd yesterday?
09:52
http://artipc10.vub.ac.be/wordpress/2012/07/01/leap-second-causing-ksoftirqd-and-java-to-use-lots-of-cpu-time/
09:53
<muppis>
It's all about the Java..
09:54
<Hyperbyte>
:(
10:08
<joulez>
does ltsp support encrypted drives? (usb)?
10:08
no
10:12davew has left IRC (davew!02604527@gateway/web/freenode/ip.2.96.69.39, Ping timeout: 245 seconds)
10:20
<alkisg>
Hyperbyte: nice catch :)
10:21
joulez: if you're using fat clients, sure, but with thin/ltspfs, dunno, is the whole partition encrypted or just files?
10:21
Has anyone tried directvnc? It looks like we could use it for ancient 32-64 Mb RAM clients...
10:22* alkisg would also like to try ltsp 4 at some point, as he's heard it was working with 16 mb ram clients as well
10:28
<Hyperbyte>
I honestly cannot believe there are still people with 16mb computers.
10:28
Or 32 or 64.
10:29
I mean, I know it's true - but I just can't wrap my head around it.
10:29
<alkisg>
We have lots of such labs in high schools, and no labs in primary schools
10:29
So we could reuse a _lot_ of such computers
10:30
I just tried it, I can watch youtube videos very nicely
10:30
My mouse doesn't work (it's probably due to the vbox tablet-mouse thing), and no greek, but I think I can solve those
10:31
Memory usage is about 33Mb, I think I can optimize that, but I don't think I can make the ubuntu initramfs small enough to boot with 32 Mb, even if it would work after booting
10:31Trixboxer has joined IRC (Trixboxer!~Trixboxer@115.124.115.71)

<alkisg>
So maybe tinycorelinux + directvnc, on a windows setup.exe bundle would be very nice for those ancient clients
10:33komunista has joined IRC (komunista!~slavko@adsl-195-168-242-060.dynamic.nextra.sk)
10:33
<alkisg>
(01:29:49 μμ) alkisg: We have lots of such labs in high schools ==> we're not using them though, they've been replaced with newer labs
10:35
Hehe even fullscreen youtube works, with ~700mbps bandwidth though :)
10:37
<Hyperbyte>
With directvnc?
10:37
<alkisg>
Yup
10:37
I wonder why it's so lightning fast, while normal vnc sucks here for me
10:41
<Hyperbyte>
Well, I did tell you before I don't have your experiences with VNC either...
10:43
<alkisg>
With Ubuntu in both ends? Strange, I've had this in every system I tested for many Ubuntu versions now
10:44
Ctrl+X on the server was unimplemented on the client though and it crashed vino-server...
10:45
<Hyperbyte>
No, not Ubuntu on both ends.
10:45
Fedora, TigerVNC.
10:52
<alkisg>
Hmm freerdp also supports directfb... teachers here would reeeally appreciate an nbd image servable by e.g. their windows 2008 servers that would allow their 32mb RAM clients to connect to them... but I don't think I can force myself into working on that :D
10:55
<Hyperbyte>
Never shake hands with the devil in order to do the Lord's work.
10:56
:P
10:56
<alkisg>
Actually they could also use 1 plain windows xp "server" with cracked termserv.dll, but that's completely out of the question :)
10:57
Proxydhcp and nbd work fine on windows, so that'd be a _very_ plug 'n' play setup... but nah :D
11:00
<Hyperbyte>
alkisg, why is that out of the question?
11:01
Afraid Bill Gates is gonna come looking for you? :P

11:50
<ltsp>
alkisg: fatclients: You may find some info about the Ubuntu/LTSP implementation of fat clients at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/FatClients
11:52
<joulez>
currently on 5.1.10-2 here
11:52
need to upgrade, but have a few legacy apps holding us back.
11:52
<alkisg>
" but with thin/ltspfs, dunno, is the whole partition encrypted or just files?"
11:53
<joulez>
a removable device like USB
11:53
<alkisg>
If you mount it without decrypting it and run `ls`, do you see files?
11:53
<joulez>
not if its encrypted with cryptsetup
11:54
usually you are prompted with a passphrase within gnome or kde.
11:54
its no big deal.
11:54
<alkisg>
Yeah then you'd have to patch ltspfs a bit to prompt about the passphrase
11:56
<joulez>
we are stuck with lenny for a while
11:56
<alkisg>
If you could code up a patch for lenny it'd probably be accepted upstream for newer versions too...
11:57
ltspfsd can look up the user's display and prompt with ldm-dialog
11:57
<joulez>
cool

TeslaTrav: it's likely a locking issue, maybe the read only attributes arent being propagated properly. rdesktop and freerdp have mailing lists, but I don't think they have irc channel

Yeah, i thought it had something to do with read only as well... Especially when the .zip files continain docs worked just fine

zip files get extracted a local temp folder that's read/write, that issues deosn't exist there

TeslaTrav, before you can access files in zip, they must be extracted to temp dir, which means they transferred to server at same time and thus make them work in Office.
22:10
When trying directly access files with Office, it tries to (afaik) open them in rw mode, which makes them unavailable or causes some other odd behaviour.
22:11
Mostly due lag or protocol/security incompabilities.
