I have a strange problem with gdm, where the face browser is no longer showing login pictures. It happened when I added a new user, but I can't figure out whether it might be an ltsp related thing or not....I have tried switching login themes, and to standard and back to graphical...still no luck...any ideas?

Any suggestions on where to start troubleshooting why dhcp3-server doesn't start on its own after bootup? I can manually start with "sudo /etc/init.d/dhcp3-server restart" where it reports stop [fail], start [ok] and works correctly. Using Kubuntu 6.10 and ltsp.
07:17
<sep>
jvin248, check the symlinks in the /etc/rc[runlevel].d dirs

<bronze>
cliebow: that actually makes sense. Imagine how many thin clients a 390 could handle. like the old IBM thin-net terminals, it could probably number in the thousands.

ahoy all! (long time no see).. I have a nice LTSP setup with dual Opteron serving ~24 KDE workstations to students learning BASH scripting... Problem is they sometimes make while : loops and, worst, those loops write to a file.
09:42
so it does happen that the system is sluggish since all the resources are assigned to that oddball user. I am attempting to figure out sane /etc/security/limits.conf in such an environment and was wondering what impact a "time" limit has on a user process (is it killed?)
09:42
if anyone can point me to a more thorough documentation than the manpage I would greatly appreciate it!
09:42

hi all... im reading some docs about ltsp with a failover server... ... i found a term, i dontk now what is... what would be an ltsp in "single nic mode" ?
09:43jvin248 has quit IRC

--- maybe they mean there is only one nic in the server..

so your kernel loads..initramfs is in place but fails goin back for second dhccp to determine root-patrh?
11:06
<sh3mh4mf0r4sh>
yes
11:06
i'm tired to check all :S
11:07
i don't know what more i do :\
11:07
<cliebow_>
what card is on the client/
11:07
<sh3mh4mf0r4sh>
r8169
11:07
Realtek 8111b
11:07
but it's simliar because before the error said
11:07
modprobe r8169
11:08
insmod /lib/modules/2.6.16.1-ltsp-2/kernel/drivers/net/r8169.ko
11:08
and catch cool
11:08
i tri too thinkin if that will be the card of server and othing either
11:08
<cliebow_>
i am not positive that driver is in the initramfs
11:08
<sh3mh4mf0r4sh>
because client catc ok the insmod to /bla/bla/bla/again/e1000.ko
11:09
if i put NIC = e1000 client insmod ok and said more. Intel Network e1000 etc
11:09
but continues out dhcpcd failed
11:09
<cliebow_>
r8169 in the client?
11:10
<sh3mh4mf0r4sh>
both
11:10
i test both
11:10
<cliebow_>
so two cards in the client..both gig cards? whopper of a thin-client?
11:11
<sh3mh4mf0r4sh>
no no
11:11
client have only 1
11:11
i just test both
11:11
<cliebow_>
that client card is what you must pass an option for in dhcpd.conf..
11:11
<sh3mh4mf0r4sh>
ok.. so have kernel panic
11:12
<cliebow_>
so the client has what for a crd?8169?
11:12
<sh3mh4mf0r4sh>
what? i dont understend .. my english is poor
11:13
<cliebow_>
so the client has what card?
11:13

yes, although I haven't tested a ton of sites. Flash works anyway

sound-wise
13:58

awesome. thanks for the info

hi all
13:58
any one works on ltsp4.2 with scanner on thinclent
13:59
<pscheie>
is that quantity 1? Does it PXE-boot?
13:59
<monteslu>
pscheie, yeah. But I don't know if it will PXE boot
13:59
<pscheie>
so, can you use it as an LTSP client then?
13:59
<monteslu>
i sent them an email asking just that
14:00
<pscheie>
their website says 'X clients' for its software; wonder what that means
14:00
<monteslu>
you can use it as an x client apparently, but that wouldn't cover sound
14:00
hehe jinx
14:00
<pscheie>
ah
14:01
<monteslu>
i think it loads its own(probably linux) os, and does an x query
14:01
it would be cheaper if it didn't include the flash ram, but just did PXE ilke the 6020P
14:01
but 139 is nuts
14:01
<pscheie>
I paid $149 for the 6020P
14:02
<monteslu>
not bad
14:02
<pscheie>
so, $10 for sound I guess
14:02
if quantity > 30, they'll drop the price to $130
14:02
<monteslu>
the 6040A has a sound card, but slower cpu
14:03
but the 400mhz chip is fanless
14:03
<pscheie>
yes, the 6030P does make a bit of sound from the fan, but I don't think it's really noticeable
14:04
the clicking from the keyboard is louder
14:04
<monteslu>
I've already bought 30 of jammcq's thin clients, but I need another 30 or so

my gdm login screens are only showing the default 'nobody.png' faces in the face browser, but up until now they have been working fine. I googled around and saw that the latest version of gdm (2.8) disables the face browser when mounted over nfs. I have gdm 2.6, but I'm guessing this is the problem...have you come across this problem before? Is there a workaround?

jammcq, Hey Jim
19:28
...and while I'm here, Google isn't helping me. Anyone know how to start ssh at bootup for a port forward? Perhaps in init?
19:28
Whe I use the -n switch, it doens't give a connection... but I don't need a shell either.
19:28
<rjune>
you want to setup an ssh port forward?
19:28
would stunnel work?
19:28* PMantis nods
19:28
<PMantis>
Hmmmm
19:29
<rjune>
You might try writing a script to do it, then put the script in /etc/inittab
19:29
<PMantis>
I don't know much about stunnel... ipcop doesn't have stunnel on it, I don't think.
19:30
<rjune>
oh, sorry
19:30
<PMantis>
I could perhaps connect to another machine for stunnel, but should I should limit the open ports
19:30
<rjune>
stunnel == ssl tunnel
19:30
I don't know how to forward ports with ssh.
19:31
I usually use openvpn
19:31
<PMantis>
Yeah, I unsderstand stunnel in concept, but can it be considered as secure as ssh?
19:31
Oh?
19:32
Wow, I would've expected you to be an old pro with *all* of ssh. :)
19:32spectra has quit IRC
19:32
<PMantis>
But that's with *my* view, based on the order which *I* learned things.
19:33
But anyways... with stunnel, can you limit the connection to only a specific "user"... perhaps only to the party with a key, like with ssh rsa keys?
