hi alkisg :) Bad luck at my school, APC ups is not working anymore (has been turned on / off max 50 times since installation), lol

we have received some money, I'm thinking about replacing the recycled PC with new ones like these: http://www.yashiweb.com/it/specifiche_tecniche/9822/

mm just got a call from a professor... one PC frozen while saving work, another had OpenOffice not starting and was not possible logoff either, and all PC seems incredible slow
05:26
my guess is they are using a very large image / images (pictures) in Impress
05:26
but the fact that so often pc freezes is really bad
05:26
often = one every lesson, or something less

alkisg: I've 512MB swap, and not verified (I tested the setup on my home, but not at school, just applied the same settings that worked at home)
06:45
<alkisg>
I wasn't able to make clients hang (with big pictures in impress and firefox etc) when I had enough swap
06:45
<markit>
also impress and libo 3.3 is not very fast itself, and the server has only 8GB for 16 clients
06:45
<alkisg>
RAM on the clients? 256?
06:45
<markit>
alkisg: what about increase swap to 1GB? wondering if will put my lan on it's knees
06:45
<alkisg>
No 512 is enough, if it's actually working
06:45
<markit>
alkisg: from 256 to 512, depends, don't know that particular one
06:47
<alkisg>
My experience with hangs is something like this: 70% = swap, 20% = graphics card, 5% = network problems, 5% = no idea
06:52
<muppis>
Any hint for this? Failed to save user : Failed to add user to LDAP database : cn: value #0 Invalid per syntax.
06:52
<markit>
mine at the moment are 100% no idea :)
06:53
alkisg: we are going to buy some new PC that will act as fat client, do you strongly suggest have a HD also for local swap?
06:53
<alkisg>
No, imho network swap works just fine
06:53
<markit>
I try to have 4GB ram
06:53
<alkisg>
I couldn't get it to crash
06:53
<markit>
ok
06:54
<alkisg>
Tested with e.g. 128 RAM on the client and forced it to use 400 MB swap. It crawled but it didn't hang.
06:54
When I closed firefox and impress and gimp etc everything was fine again
06:54
(fast)
06:54
<markit>
unfortunatly I've not there, and the teacher called me too late to ssh in and do a fast check
06:55
I have to tell them a couple of "mainteniance" things also, like kill zombie processes
06:55
and students are saving documents in the "share" area instead of their own home, don't know why
06:56
or they create a directory inside Documents with their name
06:56
even if I've explained them that each student has his OWN home, indipendent
06:56
from others
06:56
we need some hours of basic computer trainning, OMHO
06:57
I have the issue of acl and shared area unresolved still... things seems to be overcompliceted sometime wiht GNU/Linux

mr_engblom: do you use ACL by chance? (not related with your problem, is my problem :))
07:51
<mr_engblom>
i am using kde3 (trinity)...
07:51
yes, i use acl
07:53
<markit>
I've not the details here, but I want to have 2 directories in /srv
07:53
one where students and teachers can read/write
07:54
and another where teachers can r/w, but students only read
07:54
with my setup if a teacher CREATES a file in the r/w everything is fine
07:55
if instead COPIES from his home to there, the file permissions are "reduced" and only himself can r/w, other only read, if I remember correctly
07:55
do you have the same need and was able to solve in a brilliant way? :)
07:55

Guys, i was having a problema bout Read-only filesystem in a newest LTSP installation in Gentoo, to make it work i ad to modify ro to rw in /etc/exports /opt/ltsp *(rw,no_root_squash,async,no_subtree_check). Is this ok?
10:34alkisg has joined #ltsp
10:49
<alkisg>
[GuS]: don't use rw nfs root, because then any client can write anything to your exported NFS disk and that's a major security issue

<[GuS]>
alkisg: if i dont, when the client boots it says read-only filesystem full of errors...
10:50
<alkisg>
OK, but that means the problem is elsewhere
10:50
Mounting nfs rw is not a proper solution
10:51
<[GuS]>
I know... but i dont know what else to do... i been one week with this now :S
10:51
<alkisg>
Check your initramfs, something is wrong with the COW setup
10:51
Why don't you use some distro where it's more out of the box?
10:51
<[GuS]>
alkisg: believe me i whish so... but in my work we use Gentoo :S
10:51
and everytime i've install ltsp5 in gentoo i have a new error...

10:53
<alkisg>
What system does Gentoo use for the initramfs? Dracut?
10:54
<[GuS]>
Yep, iirc
10:55
<alkisg>
http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Initramfs
10:56
<[GuS]>
i've already tested if the problem was cause a old quickstart profile. That didnt solved, reinstalled ltsp-server, reinstalled quickstart and re-built again ltsp client... no look at all... and is a fresh Gentoo installation... i've installed before ltsp5 in gentoo many times, fixed errors but works... now does not
10:56
<alkisg>
If that's the default, then it's not dracut...
10:56
<[GuS]>
well, i am not sure then...
10:57
<alkisg>
Anyway it's there you should be looking
10:57

Interesting. This is an ipod connected to a client running ltsp from this server:

root@minerva:~# ls -l /media/marilyn/

ls: cannot access /media/marilyn/MJEVANS: Permission denied

<MorningSon>
so if i use 'ltsp-build-client --fat-client ubuntu-desktop' will the ltsp server give it the whole image at each boot?
21:18
or is it about the same as the image used for thin clients just configured so that some apps run locally based on the lts.conf file?

<nutron>
so, now I'm trying to save my ltsp install as being "unreliable" and generally "slower" than disk-based stations.
22:03
That's fine, but can anyone comment on my setup? See if I'm going wrong somewhere?

Octo-core xeon, 24G ram, 32G swap running Lenny.
22:04
NFS mounted home directories to the equivalent machine on the other end of the wire.
22:05
I have a secondary app server that I'm in the midst of setting up, but is my setup bad? Should we experience lag while using thunderbird (icedove)? hmm, I don't know what else to tell you.
22:05
Maybe my expecations were too high?
22:06
Oh, the thin clients all have 512mb athlon xp 2500 or better motherboards.
22:06
Network is 100mbit uplink for each station, then each switch (24 port) uplinks via a 4 gb lag connection to the upstream switch, which then links to the app server with a 4 gb bond connection again.
22:07
After watching the traffic, people can even watch video on the 100mbit connections. The switches seem to be able to handle it.
22:08
Overall, the system feels lagged, well really only when starting to type.. then it looks like it catches up.
22:09
Seems that really the only real culprit is icedove (thunderbird)... so I don't really know what I'm asking. Do others have these experiences? or is it just me?
22:09
oh yeah 25 concurrent users at one time.

nutron: if it's only on icedove, you could try running it as a localapp
