<JustSomeGuy>
hi i have a problem with my ltsp installation under ubuntu 12.04. i installed the ltsp-server-standalone package and added ARCH=i386 and FAT_CLIENT_DESKTOPS="ubuntu-desktop" to ltsp-build-client.conf to make a fat client and changed the dhcpd config to use the 192.168.4.0 subnet. i then rebooted and build the client with ltsp-build-client. now when i boot the client it workes fine until the login screen. i added the user test to th
11:58
e ltsp image and am trying to login with the user but i just get "no answer from server, restart" after that the login manager restarts and i am not logged in. when i login via the tty it workes fine. any thoughts?

<markit>
hi alkisg :) a friend of mine has upgraded teh server and chroot, but now fat clients are stuck in "busybox initramfs" error after ubuntu boot screen, any idea?
14:17
<alkisg>
markit: upgraded from what to what?
14:18
<markit>
now he is going to that school, 20 min to arrive. As far as I've understood, simply something like "aptitude full-upgrade" inside a 12.04-32 or 64 bit
14:19
also strange he says to have a "/var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/pxelinux.cfg/ltsp" file that I've not (besides the 'default' one)
14:19
<alkisg>
markit: was he using the greek schools ppa?
14:19
<markit>
yes
14:19
<alkisg>
$ ls /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/pxelinux.cfg/
14:19
default ltsp ltsp-NBD ltsp-versions-AOE ltsp-versions-NFS
14:19
default.original ltsp-AOE ltsp-NFS ltsp-versions-NBD memtest
14:20
ltsp-pnp, or plain fat chroot?
14:20
<markit>
plain fat root
14:20
ah, mine (not yet upgraded) is
14:21
root@gs1204:~# ls /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/pxelinux.cfg/
14:21
default default_ORIGINALE ltsp-NBD ltsp-NFS ltsp-versions-NBD ltsp-versions-NFS memtest
14:22
<alkisg>
Yup, that new "ltsp" file replaces the "default" file, which now becomes a symlink
14:22
<markit>
will the upgrade process bring me to a config like yours, or I should purge packages and config and recreate?
14:22
<alkisg>
Just update
14:22
<markit>
"now" means from 5.4 o 5.5 I guess
14:22
<alkisg>
Yup
14:22
<markit>
I've to update my notes too then, lol
14:23* markit has a moving targhet
14:23
<alkisg>
The change was done in order to allow someone to edit the "default" file
14:23
Without it being overwritten in upgrades
14:23
And there are new symlinks now, e.g. ltsp-generic, ltsp-generic-pae etc
14:24
So it's much easier to create and maintain a custom default file, or per-client 01-mac-address files
14:24
<markit>
mm his "default" (now he is at school) is not a symlink I see
14:25
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 196 gen 10 13:14 default
14:25
<alkisg>
tell him to vnc to me, x11vnc -connect alkisg.dyndns.org

14:30
<alkisg>

14:30
(or from the epoptes remote assistance dialog..)
14:31
<markit>
btw, after upgrade I've the same files
14:31
# ls /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/pxelinux.cfg/
14:31
default default_ORIGINALE ltsp-NBD ltsp-NFS ltsp-versions-NBD ltsp-versions-NFS memtest
14:32
but don't want to distract you
14:32
<alkisg>
After updating the chroot AND running ltsp-update-image?
14:33
<markit>
ehm, no, I proceed then
14:34
he is trying through epoptes now
14:35
mmm says is not going through, he retries with x11vnc -connect alkisg.dyndns.org
14:36
<alkisg>
markit: can you try it from your current pc to verify that it works?
14:36
He does have internet connection, right?
14:36
<markit>
yep, he is in chat (gmail chat) right now with me
14:37
seenm that he can't resolve your hostname, let me try
14:37
<alkisg>
5.54.158.139
14:39
<markit>
he says "no way", let ME try
14:40* markit installing x11vnc
14:40
<alkisg>
Yup I see you
14:41
<markit>
yep
14:41
<alkisg>
Wow that's a lot of konsole tabs there :D
14:42
<markit>
really :) wondering what's wrong with him
14:43
I've closed the connection and told him to try again
14:43
but we don't want to waste too much of your time
14:44
<alkisg>
markit: he closed the vnc session
14:45
The problem is the "default" file, and I think the specific problem is that he doesn't have the ppa in the chroot
14:45
But I didn't get a chance to verify that, he closed vnc
14:46
<markit>
x11vnc on his side is at line "10/01/2014 15:48:23 called initialize_xfixes()"
14:47
if you want you can have ssh direct access
14:48
he tries vnc again for the last time
14:48
<alkisg>
markit: he connected to me, yes that was the problem
14:48
He only had the ppa in the server, not in the chroot
14:49
But he can't, or won't, enter his sudo -i password for me to add the ppa to his chroot...
14:49
<markit>
maybe he did not realized his intervention was requred
14:49
he trusts you blindly, be sure :)
14:49
<alkisg>
I think he's typing something.. .I don't know
14:49
If you can, ask him what is going wrong
14:50
<markit>
had been distracted by someone, and did not noticed you were waiting his input
14:53
unfortunately I've to run to take my children from sky
14:53
alkisg: in any case, thanks a lot lot lot for your help
14:54
maybe you can chat with him someway through vnc if needed
14:54
later I will try the upgrade of my test VM too
14:54
(yep, I've greek ppa in chroot ;P)
14:56
<alkisg>
markit:
14:56
he has dns issues, i'll leave those for you as I don't know how you want to solve them
14:56

Hello. I'm new to LTSP but I've just recently bought 10 HP T5520 thin clients and I'm having some issues with setting it up on my already running ubuntu server 12.04.3 LTS.

I'd appreciate any help. I had a headless ubuntu server machine(didn't need GUI/desktop environment) running for some time, and now I'm trying to incorporate LTSP server into it.
16:28
<other_ot1er_joe>
whats the problem?
16:28
<ncom0pl>
Some things have been a little confusing to me. Do I have to install a desktop environment itself on the machine, or does it install with the LTSP package?
16:28
So far I've installed ltsp-server-standalone.
16:29
<other_ot1er_joe>
you'll need to install a gui on the server
16:29
<ncom0pl>
The thin client boot's, I get to the LDM login screen, but when I try to login it "Verifies the password", then goes to black screen for a sec, and then sertarts the login screen again.
16:29
<other_ot1er_joe>
the clients will use X11 forwarding to run that gui

<other_ot1er_joe>
have a read over this
16:30
it should help you out quite a bit
16:30
the man page for lts.conf is also quite helpful
16:31
if you've got the clients booting and LDM showing up, you're well on your way. The hard part is over.
16:31
<ncom0pl>
Okay, thanks, I'll have a read. I guess it's okay to install some other DE like MATE, Xfce or even LXDE rather than the default Unity for ubuntu?
16:32
<other_ot1er_joe>
sure
16:32
I run fat clients with LXDE myself
16:33
<ncom0pl>
I'm wondering if it will eun on those thin clients anyway, as they have just 128MB of RAM.
16:36
WEll, the manual says it's enough so I'm crossing fingers.

but it still just restarts the logins screen on the thin client
17:12
when I try to run "mate-session" on the server locally(with a monitor plugged in, so basically just like a regular desktop), i get "** (mate-session:2721): WARNING **: Cannot open display:"

I managed to set up MATE and LXDE to work locally on the server, but when trying to log in via thin client it just restarts the LDM... Any ineas anyone?
18:55
<alkisg>
Which distro/version?
18:55
<ncom0pl>
In the ldm.log it says "starting X session", and the next second it goes "X session ended".
18:55

<alkisg>
From there, try: ssh user@server
18:55
Replace user with an existing username, leave server exactly as it is, don't replace it with anything
18:57
<ncom0pl>
Okay, it connewcted through ssh and let me log in.
18:57
<alkisg>
Did you see any warning about "trusting server" etc?
18:58
<ncom0pl>
Nope, nothing, just asked for pass and logged in.
18:58
<alkisg>
OK. Server side: tail -F /var/log/auth.log
18:58
Client side, alt+ctrl+f7, try to login in ldm
18:58
Did the authentication try succeed?
19:01
<ncom0pl>
Yeah, but then it goes "Jan 10 19:58:16 balin sshd[6909]: error: Failed to allocate internet-domain X11 display socket." in the auth.log.
19:01
<alkisg>
Hmm google that, it might mean that your sshd disallows ssh -X,
19:02
and in the meantime, you can try with [Default] LDM_DIRECTX=True in /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/lts.conf
19:03
<ncom0pl>
Do I have to reboot the thin client after modifying lts.conf?

<alkisg>
No
19:03
Ah sorry
19:03
Yes, the client yes, the server no
19:03
:)
19:04
<ncom0pl>
K, thanks :).
19:07
No change with LDM_DIRECTX=True, googling the ssh issue.
19:08
<alkisg>
From screen_02=shell, does `getltscfg -a` return the LDM_DIRECTX line?
19:08
I.e. did the configuration change actually reach the client?
19:09
<ncom0pl>
Yes it does.
19:10
<alkisg>
OK, check google, e.g. "either put "AddressFamily inet" in the sshd_conf "...
19:12
<ncom0pl>
MAGIC!
19:12
Yup, the "AddressFamily inet" did the trick
19:13
Thank You so much, I really struggled with it.
19:13
Wouldn't think it was an ssh issue.
19:14
<alkisg>
You're welcome
19:15
<ncom0pl>
Actually I was checking it on a laptop via PXE. Now let's chceck how it goes with the actual thin client with 128MB RAM onboard...
19:16
<alkisg>
With 128 mb ram you'd better use some tricks... like disabling sound, localdev, localapps etc
19:17
And you might want to use a newer ltsp version which saves some more ram, replacing cdpinger with udev rules etc etc

I was wondering if I could set up the thin client to use a swap partition.

19:18
<ncom0pl>
SWAP is not RAM, but it's better than running out of RAM...
19:19
<alkisg>
It should automatically use NBD_SWAP from the server
19:19
Check `free` on the client screen_02
19:19
<ncom0pl>
Yeah, I did, and it says 0 swap.
19:19
<alkisg>
Do you have an /etc/nbd-server/conf.d/swap.conf file on the server?
19:20||cw has joined IRC (||cw!~chris@phpgroupware/cw)
19:20
<ncom0pl>
Nope, no such file.
19:22
<alkisg>
Try this, I don't remember if it's there in 12.04 vanilla: sudo ltsp-config nbd-server
19:22
And check if it created the file
19:24
<ncom0pl>
It's not there, ltsp-config: command not found.
19:29
The 128MB RAM thin client freezes when logging in, probably due to low RAM.
19:30
It has less than 2500K RAM before logging in...
19:30
free RAM*
19:32
<alkisg>
I'd advice you to add that ppa to your server + chroot sources.list...
19:32
<ncom0pl>
Yep, I'll try to do taht now.
19:32
<alkisg>
If you don't want to, I think there's a wiki page that says how to manually create swap.conf
19:38
<ncom0pl>
Do I have to ltsp-update-image after upgrading from the ppa?
19:41willianmazzardo has left IRC (willianmazzardo!~textual@187.4.15.116, Quit: Computer has gone to sleep.)
19:42
<alkisg>
Yes
19:42
You need to add it to your sources both in the server and in the chroot
19:46
<ncom0pl>
Oh, ok, I only added it in the server.
19:47
Might be a newbie question, but how do I do that in the chroot? And do I have to run some other commands as well after adding in chroot?

Greetings All!
21:15
We have just implemented a LTSP server install on LinuxMint 15; problem is I cannot remote to it to assist. All of the clients are working, but I cannot get to the server from the "public" side of my LAN. Any ideas?
21:19
<||cw>
"get to" in what way? ssh?
21:20
what have you setup to allow remote assistance?
21:22

Either SSH or VNC; neither work.
21:23
I'm not sure where to go to set SSH up to allow access from the "public" side NIC.
