When nbd-client in persist mode is trying to reconnect because of nbd-server restart, it is highly probable that nbd-server will not be ready to serve a reconnection request in time causing nbd-client to exit with "connection refused" diagnostics. This change makes nbd-client in persist mode retry its reconnection attempts until succeeded.

...that sounds useful for a backport...

Hi. Setting up ltsp-cluster on ubuntu 12.04. For some reason, clients try to PXE boot, and I see the DISCOVER and OFFER log entries, but never an ACK entry, thus the thin-clients are not booting. Not sure if its something in my dhcp config files, but they sure look a lot like my working ltsp (non-cluster) environment. Any ideas appreciated!

mikec: DHCP doesn't involve DNS. Check if there's another authoritative DHCP server on your network, which rejects your LTSP server's DHCP OFFERs

18:56
have any of you done a direct Edubuntu 10.04 upgrade to 12.04?
18:56
I typicaly don't do OS upgrades but if LTS to LTS proves easy with an LTSP server I may just do it unless there's a compelling reason not to

19:01
<highvoltage>
roasted: I've done upgrade testing for that before release, and it passed the upgrade tests
19:03
<roasted>
highvoltage: so you'd say 10.04-12.04 is a safe bet?
19:03
I'd hate to rebuild everything if I don't *need* to, ya know. Sure, configs are backed up and whatnot but...
19:03
I would rather know what I'm getting into beforehand.
19:16
<highvoltage>
roasted: I usually make a copy of the filesystem on the filesystem just before doing something like that, just to be safe
19:16
<roasted>
highvoltage: copy of the FS? In terms of what... dd'ing everything?
19:16
<highvoltage>
(so basically just make a directory called oldroot and copy everything in / in there except for /dev, /sys, /proc etc)
19:17
<vagrantc>
highvoltage: just did my first test ltsp build after ldm/ldm-themes hit wheezy ... succeeded and pulled in the new default theme :)
19:18
<highvoltage>
dd'ing would work but it's slow since it writes the whole disk sector by sector, having a copy of the filestructure means that in a worst case scenario, I can just move the copy the files back and do a grub-install and its back
19:19komunista has left IRC (komunista!~slavko@adsl-195-098-016-210.dynamic.nextra.sk, Read error: Operation timed out)
19:19
<roasted>
highvoltage: when you say copy everything you mean sudo cp -R / /home/administrator/Desktop/backupoffilesystem ??
19:19* vagrantc uses partimage for full system backups
19:19
<vagrantc>
you'll want to use rsync or something that respects hardlinks
19:19
<roasted>
ah k
19:20
<vagrantc>
or some other utility designed for proper backups
19:20
<roasted>
clonezilla, etc?
19:20
<highvoltage>
roasted: yeah, basically. but yes as vagrantc says, use rsync instead, and exclude any kind of mounted filesystems
19:20
<vagrantc>
rsync is one of the simplest, but easy to get slightly wrong
19:20
<roasted>
highvoltage: I take it this is done via livecd?
19:20
<highvoltage>
roasted: I usually just use it on-system with no one logged in or otherwise using the system
19:21
<roasted>
no one logged in, in terms of clients?
19:21
not sure how you can initiate commands without being logged in somehow...
19:21
<highvoltage>
thin clients, using any web service, or anything that could change any data you care about
19:21
but you could be logged in, that's fine
19:21
<roasted>
k
19:22
I suppose I can just fire up the upgrade service via update manager? Or would I be better off apt-get upgrade && apt-get dist-upgrade'ing it?
19:22
<highvoltage>
apt-get dist-upgrade will definitely break it
19:22
<roasted>
oh my
19:22
why is that
19:22
<highvoltage>
it's the #1 way to break any lts upgrade
19:22
it's not supported on Ubuntu
19:22
<roasted>
oh
19:22
well shit?
19:23
I wasn't aware
19:23
<highvoltage>
update manager knows about problems between package upgrades and transitions that happened since 10.04
19:23
if you don't use it you're basically gauranteed to be screwed.
19:23
<roasted>
so you recommend DO use update manager?
19:23
<highvoltage>
yep, lots of people do it. that's why there's usually warnings about it in the release notes and upgrade instructions.
19:24
<roasted>
well imagine that
19:24
I figured the terminal way would be the one to rely on
19:24
<highvoltage>
roasted: yes, it's the tool you should use to upgrade ubuntu
19:24
<roasted>
k, I'm really glad I asked
19:24
appreciate it
19:24
<highvoltage>
roasted: you can use it from the terminal too
19:24
<alkisg>
dist-upgrade just means "update the packages" for 10.04, it's not about series upgrades
19:24
I think `do-release-upgrade` is the console equivalent
19:24
<roasted>
alkisg: hey there! been a while.
19:24
<alkisg>
Hi roasted, hi vagrantc :)
19:24
<highvoltage>
alkisg: well, he probably meant after updating source.list
19:24
<roasted>
(I still owe ya a case of beer) :P
19:25
<alkisg>
I heard paypal now accepts payment in beers :P :D
19:25* vagrantc waves to alkisg
19:25
<dead_inside>
lol
19:25
<roasted>
bahahaha. I'll have to be sure to utilize that feature!
19:25
<dead_inside>
glad to have you back alkisg
19:25
<roasted>
highvoltage: moral of the story, use update manager... got it. :D
19:25
<alkisg>
Hi dead_inside
19:26
<roasted>
alkisg: the console equivalent of updating to the new LTS via update manager, you mean?
19:26
<alkisg>
Yes, but I never use upgrades so don't take my word for it :)
19:26
<highvoltage>
vagrantc: oh awesome (regarding theme, sorry for lag, I'm interrupted constantly by in-real-life people :p)
19:26
<roasted>
alkisg: I don't either, but since this is already an LTS and fully set up, upgrading it (if its reliable) would be super nice.
19:27
<alkisg>
Sure, I understand the motives for upgrades
19:27
<roasted>
It's kind of funny. I set up LTSP at my last job... and then my buddy applied for it and got my old job...
19:27
<alkisg>
But since I've a simple script to install all my apps, and I have all my settings under /home, I don't bother... not many modifications in /etc to re-apply after format
19:28
<roasted>
so now my old boss (good working relationship with him) wants to re-hire me as a sub to train my buddy on LTSP, and upgrade to 12.04 in the process.
19:28
Hence, tomorrow's agenda.
19:28
It's been months since I touched that server, so I'm trying to jolt my brain back into that mode.
19:29
alkisg: I hear you. In this instance I know I did a lot of modifications to get the profiles to show up a specific way, etc. I just hate to redo all that when it's not 100% fresh.
19:29
if I can retain all of the mods I did, but upgrade it, we'd be golden.
19:30
I know I have a google doc I left behind containing every-single-last-step-i-ever-did, but to read that and effectively re-learn would take a decent chunk of time I don't have to spare right now
