Hello all!
00:02
Does LTSP support FreeNX for remote terminals? I heard there was some work being done on that a couple years ago. Wondering if it ever went mainstream.

<vagrantc>
Selveste1: i wasn't able to see the image ... but you should only have /opt/ltsp in exports, not /opt/ltsp/i386
14:15
<Selveste1>
Both are there... just wile I'm testing :)
14:15
<vagrantc>
Selveste1: where does your pxe configuration come from? it's not standard LTSP
14:15
Selveste1: yes, but having both there can *cause* problems.
14:16
Selveste1: could you paste the output of the following command:

<Selveste1>
The PXE is an allready working PXE, with a lot of other Images (net install of Ubuntu and debian and stuff)
14:17
<vagrantc>
Selveste1: well, your working PXE config has options in it that will likely break LTSP.
14:17
Selveste1: etch doesn't support NBD, for example, and you've added options for NBD
14:17
<Selveste1>
Btw. I will ul the image in a sec :)
14:18
<vagrantc>
Selveste1: debian lenny was also released last month- LTSP is much better supported in lenny.
14:19
<Selveste1>
http://img25.imageshack.us/my.php?image=ubuntultspboot.png - I know that lenny is out, but I will wait for a wile to upgrade to lenny just to be safe
14:20

14:20* vagrantc wonders why it is named "ubuntultspboot" when it is debian...

14:24* Ryan52 thinks that that's a really weird way to awk it..
14:24
<Ryan52>
why would you want the version and package name on separate lines?
14:24

"Selveste1" pasted "Debian - LTSP - after upgrade" (8 lines) at http://pastebot.ltsp.org/285
15:03
<vagrantc>
Selveste1: ah, there was a bug in etch's initramfs that made it so you can't specify the ip address with nfsroot
15:03
Selveste1: so you'll have to configure your DHCP server to pass the appropriate next-server option
15:04
<Selveste1>
Yes, and the next-server option is the one I use
15:04
I haven't specify any IP in the LTSP ore PXE config
15:04
<vagrantc>
Selveste1: yes, but you passed nfsroot=ip.of.server:/opt/ltsp/i386 on the commandline
15:05
<Selveste1>
that's true :)
15:05
<vagrantc>
i think that will trigger the bug.
15:05
Selveste1: can't you pass root-path via dhcp?
15:05
Selveste1: alternately, you could build a lenny ltsp chroot on an etch server.
15:06
Selveste1: you're running the tftp server on the LTSP server, right?
15:06
<Selveste1>
yes I am, but not the DHCP-server
15:06
<vagrantc>
right. so the next-server argument should point to the LTSP server
15:07
<Selveste1>
yes and it already dos - cause that is the same server as my PXE is on already
15:09
<vagrantc>
Selveste1: could you paste your dhcpd.conf ?
15:09
Selveste1: and the actual contents of your pxelinux.cfg/default ?
15:09
<Selveste1>
yes - just a sec
15:11

15:13
ups sorry
15:13
rung window :)
15:14
<vagrantc>
Selveste1: you need in dhcpd.conf: option root-path "/opt/ltsp/i386";
15:14
Selveste1: and remove the nfsroot= option in pxelinux.cfg/default
15:15
Selveste1: and drop the "rw" argument
15:17
<Selveste1>
still same error as the image I pasted
15:17
<vagrantc>
Selveste1: did you restart dhcp3-server ?
15:17
<Selveste1>
yep
15:19
<vagrantc>
oh well
15:20
can't think of what else it could be. i've tested on *many* etch servers without this sort of trouble. so likely some missing configuration option somewhere.
15:20
Selveste1: run ltsp-update-kernels on the ltsp server
15:21* vagrantc can't help but feel like LTSP in lenny is already old, let alone etch
15:23
<stgraber>
vagrantc: hehe, you also have that feeling ? :) must be even worse with Debian's release cycle.
15:23
<vagrantc>
stgraber: what gets me through is keeping up decent backports
15:24
<Selveste1>
vagrantc: so you mean that I have to upgrade to lenny then ?
15:25
<vagrantc>
Selveste1: i can't figure out your issue, and i only have so much time for non-standard setups on old releases
15:25
Selveste1: have you tried a more conventional install? i.e. an LTSP server with two nics, one for internet access and one for the thin clients?
15:26
reducing the varaibles
15:27
<Selveste1>
The LTSP server is on a local network, and only have to run fat and thin clients
15:27
<vagrantc>
yes, but you could set up a test server, get familiar with how LTSP works, and port it over to your real setup
15:29
<Selveste1>
thats right :) I will try that then :) I have a clean installed etch server anyway
15:36
vagrantc: is this option right "option root-path "/opt/ltsp/i386";" is it not suppose to be "option root-path "/opt/ltsp";" ? like the chroot on the LTSP server ?
15:36
in the dhcp.conf
15:37
<vagrantc>
Selveste1: the former
15:37
as i pasted earlier
15:37
<Selveste1>
okay

hi
16:41
just a question, do you know why i have to wait between 7-8 min between the choose of PXE boot and the prompt for login/password on my lightweight client?

16:51
<furiousdraz1>
vagrantc: boot : PXE, 2Go RAM, Centrino Vpro 2 Nvidia quadro
16:52
<vagrantc>
furiousdraz1: that's your "lightweight client" ?
16:52
<furiousdraz1>
with direct connect 1Gb to the server
16:52
yes
16:52
<vagrantc>
gigabit networking?
16:52
<furiousdraz1>
it's juste a test with my personnal computer (a new HP)
16:52
vagrantc: yes
16:53
it's why i think that the "lightweight client" is not the problem
16:53
<vagrantc>
no idea what would make it so slow ... i use a 2.4GHz server, with 400MHz-1Ghz clients and they boot in just a few minutes
16:54
without gigabit
16:56
<furiousdraz1>
vagrantc: why 7 min to boot my lightweight client !!?
16:56
maybe LTSP configuration file?
16:57
is there any options or filte to configure to custom my boot in /opt/ltsp/i386
16:57
??
16:57
<vagrantc>
not really
16:57
<furiousdraz1>
ohhh
16:57
<vagrantc>
i mean, you can customize the files in /opt/ltsp/i386, but nothing i can think of that would affect your slow boot.
16:58
furiousdraz1: i guess you could install bootchart, and see where it's hanging ...
16:59
<furiousdraz1>
i hear about : /opt/ltsp/i386/etc/lts.conf ...
16:59
<vagrantc>
furiousdraz1: yeah, but there's no LTSP_IS_SLOW=True option :P
17:00
furiousdraz1: is there anywhere it hangs on boot?
17:00
furiousdraz1: any messages on the screen that sit there a long time?
17:00
<furiousdraz1>
i have to install bootchart on my chroot environnemnt?
17:02
at the boot (like dmesg) it stoped à 2" an 220" on mouse and keyboard but i don't remeber the message
17:02
<vagrantc>
or you could just watch the boot process and see what messages seem to stall
17:02
well, boot it and get the message
17:03
<furiousdraz1>
ok, just wait 8 min ;)
17:03
<vagrantc>
or indstall bootchart: LTSP_HANDLE_DAEMONS=false chroot /opt/ltsp/i386 apt-get install bootchart
17:04
i don't remember what all you need to configure with bootchart
17:04
so if you can just look at the boot messages and figure out which places it stalls, that would be easiest.
17:05
furiousdraz1: besides, it will probably not take 8 minutes to find the place(s) where it is stalling
17:07
<furiousdraz1>
