Heh, nbd-server for windows: http://www.vanheusden.com/windows/nbdsrvr/
02:07
So I guess it's possible to use LTSP without Linux! (pxe/tftp => nbd => rdesktop)
02:11
<muppis>
Does LTSP stand for Linux Terminal Server Project?
02:13
<alkisg>
Yup
02:13
<muppis>
So it couldn't (as I think of..) be LTS anymore, if there is Windows as server..
02:13
<alkisg>
The boot OS would be still Linux :)
02:13
(the nbd image)
02:14
I mean that a Linux server wouldn't be necessary, but the virtual client disk would still contain a linux os
02:15
<muppis>
And I count it vice versa.
02:16
But using Windows in client disk would some kind of masochism..
02:16
would be..
02:16
<alkisg>
...if not impossible
02:18ogra has joined #ltsp
02:18
<muppis>
That's ture. Dos -based Windows (95/98/me) would work, done that.
02:19
<alkisg>
Yeah having a net disk over int 13h is easy, but that's not possible with the NT series
02:19
<muppis>
Actually I did diskless Win95. Booted from CD, created RAMdrive, copied whole punch from CD to RAM and then started Windows.
02:19
<alkisg>
The biggest problem is hardware changes on the clients though
02:20
So even with windows 9x, you can't have win-based thin clients that work out of the box independed of the client hardware
02:21
With linux, kids come to schools and boot their netbooks as thin or fat clients. That's pretty much impossible with any windows technology so far...
02:22
<muppis>
That's true.

By the way. It should be hottest time in year here in Finland (and sure it is, been over 25C whole month) and it's snowing NW part of Finland..

in ubuntu, are local apps set up on lucid the same as on jaunty? the ubuntu docs at help.ubuntu.com don't cover lucid

<alkisg>
pmatulis: the most recent page is about karmic, follow that one
08:05
Both the karmic + jaunty pages are unnecessarily complicated, but karmic is a little better.
08:06
So, something like that: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSPKarmicLocalAppsFirefox
08:06
<pmatulis>
alkisg: ok, thought that was especially for firefox
08:06wwx has joined #ltsp
08:06
<alkisg>
pmatulis: it is, but you can just use "apt-get install yourprogram" instead of "apt-get install firefox" there
08:07
<pmatulis>
alkisg: yeah, ok, thanks
08:08
<alkisg>
Feel free to write a new page at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/LocalApps with all the correct info for Lucid+

what is the trick to get a terminal running on the client again?
08:28
<alkisg>
!localxterm
08:28
<ltspbot`>
alkisg: "localxterm" :: while sitting on a thin client, open a gnome terminal. In that, run: ltsp-localapps xterm. An xterm will open. That xterm runs locally, so any commands you enter there are executed directly on the client.
08:29
<pmatulis>
alkisg: yeah, think that
08:29
is it

any of you had seen nbd_server Not enough magic in syslog ?
10:20

we do live in a more mundane world these days, it's true. funny that nbd would be the one to notice, though

mgariepy: no, I haven't seen it, that message seems to be in the request packet analyzing phase of nbd-server, so it shouldn't be too common
10:23
Maybe problems in nbd-proxy or in the network could cause it?
10:23
(I'm not using nbd-proxy...
10:26
<mgariepy>
alkisg, hmm i'll try disabling nbd-proxy
10:27
i'm aware it's not common it's the first time i saw this in 30 months ;)

Hi, i use ltsp5 and ubuntu 9.04, suddenly vinagre doesnt find vnc servers in network, possibly vncserver doesnt notify to avahi
13:19
so i cannot monitor users
13:21
to monitor them i have to put manually servername:5900, 5901, etc..
13:39
<alkisg>
coordinador: I filed this bug, maybe you should do the same: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=625062
13:39
It isn't LTSP related, I don't think anyone here will be able to help you.
13:39
<coordinador>
thank you very much, alkisg , i will check it
13:42
<alkisg>
muppis: about the local firefox and the themes problem, I think the missing package is gnome-settings-daemon. E.g. if you try `killall gnome-settings-daemon` in a normal session, you'll lose the decorations and it will look like a localapps firefox.
13:43
Unfortunately, it depends on gconf, so I'm not sure if it will work. If you ever try to install it in the chroot, make a backup first.

alkisg, thanks for info about localapss firefox. I was doing other case past two weeks, so I haven't done nothing about this. I must try it at monday morning.
15:44
Not two weeks, this week only.
15:44
<alkisg>
muppis: ok, but I don't think it'll work because of gconf, so do keep a backup of /opt/ltsp before you try it
15:45
<muppis>
I try to remember that.
