Can anyone confirm if client connected printers in Edubuntu 12.04 64bit install work? I have a new install and ltsp.conf spec locks the client boot process on just that client, client with static ip address. Appears to be related to jetpipe problem. Reverted back to 10.04 and have no problem.

So now that I have 12.04 working on my thin clients... fantastically I might add thanks to this forum... hows the best way to go about editing the desktop for the thin clients so they get our app menus and to remove I don't want them playing with?
18:30JesseC has joined IRC (JesseC!JesseCW@wsip-98-175-20-126.br.br.cox.net)
18:31
<mikec>
after much ado, I finally have the cluster up and clients logging in. but of course there is still an issue. now when users log in they just get a blank desktop with no launcher. not very usable. what packages do I need to install and where (on the app server I'm assuming or in chroot?) in order to get a normal gnome desktop going?
18:36
i've installed ubuntu-desktop
18:37
<blakes>
mikec, are you using a thick client?
18:38
<mikec>
nope, thin, diskless
18:39
again, i followed these instructions and only installed the packages listed https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/LTSP-Cluster
18:39
and according to it, there should be a desktop environment once logged in, but I just get the ubuntu desktop background, with right-click abilities and all, but no app launcher
18:41
<blakes>
I don't have any experience with clustering... so YMMV. However, we did, from time to time experience this problem with our thin clients on 10.04LTS and ltsp5. The problem was in a corrupted desktop in the user's home directory, not in the image.
18:43
<mikec>
perhaps i should try creating a new user on the root server
18:46PhoenixSTF has joined IRC (PhoenixSTF!~rudi@78.29.175.178)
18:49
<blakes>
There's an idea.
18:49
<vagrantc>
with thin clients, you install software on the server itself, just like a regular desktop computer.
18:51
<mikec>
right, so i take that to mean I need to install apps on the app server. right now i have only one app server in this ltsp-cluster environment. to get a full gnome desktop, are there packages beyond ubuntu-desktop that need to be installed?
18:54
<blakes>
I am thinking about changing from thin clients to fat... almost all my clients computers are dual core w/512mb ram. What do you think?
18:54
<mikec>
i got it. i had to set the session to Ubuntu 2D for some reason
18:55
now is there a way to set the default session to Ubuntu 2D.....

blakes: you'll probably want more ram.
19:31
mikec: there's a lot of bad advice on how to default to ubuntu 2D, but i'm not sure what the status is in 12.04 at the moment.
19:32
in theory, you should be able to set LDM_SESSION=ubuntu-2d or some such, but that may have gotten fixed in LTSP after 12.04 was released.
19:34
<stgraber>
the automatic fallback to unity-2d for fat clients was fixed in a stable release update last week
19:34
so up to date chroots should be fine
19:36
<vagrantc>
fat clients only, though?
19:37
<stgraber>
yeah, thin clients will always fallback to unity-2d as the 3D version requires direct rendering
19:37
so the check ran by compiz will fail and auto-fallback to the 2D version
19:37
(unless something is terribly wrong in the mesa stack on the server)
19:37* vagrantc hears a lot of reports that it doesn't fall back successfully on thin clients
19:37
<vagrantc>
or at least, it suspiciously sounds like that
19:38
<stgraber>
well, it clearly does here, but I'm using "good" thin clients, as in atom based machines
19:38
and I don't run an nvidia driver or something like that on the server that could potentially break the mesa stack
19:47
<mikec>
stgraber is right, i just had to uninstall compiz which i thought i did before, but may have been put back on a reinstall during troubleshooting

blakes: have you asked #ubuntu ?
21:27
<blakes>
nah. see, I can get all kinds of info about changing the look and feel of the desktop, but I want change the SHARED environment.
21:29
<alkisg>
Linux is a multiuser system in general, so multi-user related question aren't specific to #ltsp...
21:29
<||cw>
blakes: sure, but ltsp is just a way for thin clients to access a normal system. everything else you do is the same as on a desktop
21:30
<blakes>
for instance, I need to install an app for standardized student testing and it just needs a launcher. I can make that launcher on MY desktop, but how the f* do I make it a launcher that everyone has/
21:31
<||cw>
that's an ubuntu question for sure
21:31

and like most unity Q's i've had, I half suspect it'll be "oh we haven't added that yet"
21:32
I don't mind unity itself, I mind how many things I can't have with it that I used to have
21:33
<alkisg>
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=MTE2MTQ "Ubuntu 12.10 Drops Unity 2D Desktop"... I don't think LLVMpipe will be good enough for LTSP... /me wonders what Ubuntu/LTSP will use by default for 12.10, gnome-fallback?
21:43
<Hyperbyte>
alkisg, interesting
21:43
I know Fedora recently implemented Gnome Shell in such a way that it works 100% with software rendering
21:44
I think if LTSP would work with systemd, it'd go nicely with Fedora
21:44
If only I had more technical knowledge about this kind of stuff, I'd have built an LTSP version for Fedora 17 already
21:45
<alkisg>
Hyperbyte: software rendering is acceptable, software rendering over LAN, nope
21:45
LTSP doesn't have many daemons, most stuff is done from init-ltsp.d which is called before init, so the init daemon doesn't really matter
21:51
<Hyperbyte>
I don't understand your statement about software rendering over lan?
21:52
Isn't that what LTSP thin clients do?
21:53
By the way, I really think everyone should visit the new LTSP website and add their LTSP success stories to the site, plus a pin to the worldmap: http://www.ltsp.org/
21:54
<muppis>
:D
21:54
<Hyperbyte>
:-D
21:54* Hyperbyte is very happy the site is released
21:54
<Hyperbyte>
muppis, I did a db purge by the way, as I said. But I'd love it if you re-added your LTSP implementation to the map. :)
21:55
<muppis>
Hyperbyte, doing it already. :)

Hyperbyte: X is fast over the network, opengl with software emulation isn't

<dead_inside>
Hyperbyte i got to get permission from my boss but if he says ok i'll submit my story, ltsp cluster with 4 servers and an unknown number of thin and fat clients
22:03
<Hyperbyte>
dead_inside, cool. :-)
22:03
You could always add the story anonimously, with a 'nearby' location
22:03
<dead_inside>
its asking for my email address… thats not going public is it?
22:05
<Hyperbyte>
dead_inside, hover over the "E-mail address" text
22:05
<dead_inside>
oh
22:05
thats awesome
22:07
<Hyperbyte>
You'll get a link via mail, which you can use to edit your story later. For example, if your boss agrees to make his LTSP usage public, you can afterwards add the name of the organisation and a link to their website. :-)
