<eirikb>
I'm saddened to say I've given up on ltsp. Either my use case is too special, or my abilities too limited. I switched to ISO (for now)
10:48
<alkisg>
eirikb: whatever suits you, but I thought you had got it working with directly booting .vdi images?
10:48
(when you say ISO, do you mean booting live cd .iso images?)
10:49
<eirikb>
Yes, but then docker didn't work (without installing upon boot, which was a bit bad), and then I struggled with X
10:49
Yes booting live ISO
10:49
<alkisg>
Well, the live iso does have X
10:49
So you were trying very different things there...
10:49
I don't know why your .vdi didn't have X
10:50
Anyways, whatever suits you best
10:51
<derick_>
eirikb : may I know what the issue is?
10:51
<eirikb>
In my second try I installed a Debian with Desktop environment, and tried to start this over ltsp, but the screen just became black, I tried with both ltsp-client-core and ltsp-client (both old packages, as they were from Debian 9 repo)
10:52
<alkisg>
Both jessie and stretch boot fine here as ltsp clients
10:53
<eirikb>
Yes I'm probably doing something wrong, and I don't know what, it's beyond me. I've spent too much time on this
10:54
<alkisg>
Possibly. It's true that diverting from the ltsp defaults does require knowledge.
11:00
<derick_>
I am not an expert. But I would suggest installing ltsp on a ubuntu first and then try on debian.
11:01
<eirikb>
I gave it a quick spin on default on 18.04 using the ppa (following the pnp guide) and it did boot. I got a menu on the client for creating a user or something, perhaps a setting?
11:02
<derick_>
try this: https://github.com/d78ui98/dev--LTSP/tree/branch1
11:06
<eirikb>
I think I'll stick to my ISO for now. It took me 5 minutes to set up PXE for ISO, and another five to build the iso with both docker and X. That is a fraction of a fraction of the time I've spent trying to do diskelss boot. I might switch to clonezilla or FOG later
11:08
<alkisg>
"build the iso"?
11:08
<derick_>
okay cool :)
11:08
<eirikb>
alkisg: It's archiso
11:09* alkisg can't really understand why eirikb is trying all those weird methods...
11:09
<alkisg>
...but since you found a solution, all is well
11:11
<eirikb>
Yeah I probably should just go for FOG, that would be the most common approach
11:11lucascastro has left IRC (lucascastro!~lucas@177-185-141-105.isotelco.net.br, Remote host closed the connection)
11:12
<alkisg>
Fog is for installation, not for netbooting, right?
11:12
I was thinking you wanted netbooting...
11:13
<eirikb>
I just want my Jenkins slaves. I imagine I can tell FOG to write my VDI to disk, and then boot it from disk
11:13
<alkisg>
I don't think FOG has any code related to netbooting
11:13
That comes from the distro live CDs
11:13
If you have local disks, then you can copy them with ltsp too
11:14
I.e. if you're just looking for a cloning tool
11:14
<eirikb>
Boot a normal linux using ltsp, then have my own little boot script to fetch an image from the server and dd this to disk, then boot the disk?
11:15
<alkisg>
!epoptes
11:15
<ltsp>
epoptes: Epoptes is a computer lab administration and monitoring tool. It works on Ubuntu and Debian based labs with LTSP or non-LTSP servers, thin and fat clients, standalone workstations, NX clients etc. More info: http://www.epoptes.org
11:15
<alkisg>
I use epoptes and ltsp to dd windows to clients
11:15
So I just select the netbooted clients, and run a dd command from the "exec command" dialog
11:15
<eirikb>
Not sure what the benefit over FOG would be
11:16
<alkisg>
Not sure either; I haven't tried fog. Epoptes does give you a nice environment to manage all the netbooted clients.
