<alkisg>
kieppie1: afaik, spice only _plans_ to offer 3d passthrough acceleration to VMs, not to remote clients, did I miss anything?
03:04
For 3d over the network, the only thing I heard of is virtualgl, which I tried but it crashed my server
03:04
Of course if a server is good enough to render 3d itself and then send the result as a video stream to the clients, then sure, that would work, but that doesn't depend on 3d client-side availability
03:06
For now, ltsp only supports compositing etc desktops if the WM runs on the clients locally, e.g. localapps, ltsp fat clients...

<warren>
alkisg: oddly enough, compiz running on the remote server (not as a local app) used to work in older versions quite well
08:44staffencasa has left IRC (staffencasa!~staffenca@8-220.ptpg.oregonstate.edu, Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
08:44
<alkisg>
warren: it still works with llvmpipe, but it's very slow
08:45
<warren>
alkisg: I vaguely remember it was around the advent of DRI2 when it stopped working
08:46
<alkisg>
warren: so with dri1 one could run compiz over the network well enough? should we try to report bugs about dri2? or should we try to switch and run the WM as a localapp by default, if it requires 3d?
08:46staffencasa has joined IRC (staffencasa!~staffenca@8-220.ptpg.oregonstate.edu)
08:47
<warren>
alkisg: hmm, i might be wrong about DRI2
08:48
alkisg: with thin client graphics hardware that supported compositing, compiz running ON THE SERVER had very good performance on the client
08:48
hmm
08:50
alkisg: Fedora 10 was the last version I know it worked, perhaps Fedora 11 too. Sometime after that it stopped working.
08:50
<alkisg>
Gotcha, but I wasn't able to ever reproduce that, I only got llvmpipe on the client even if it supports 3d normally
08:51
<warren>
It was actually the software itself aborting
08:51
it might be as simple as removing a conditional that was added at that time
08:52
alkisg: Fedora 17+ is supposed to have a fallback software compositer, does that work
08:52
?
08:52
<alkisg>
I think stgraber put an env var at some point about LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT
08:53
warren, the software compositor is llvmpipe, I think its performance is acceptable locally but not over the network
08:53
I didn't try a whole DE with llvmpipe, just a few apps, and it was tooooo slow
08:53
<warren>
the real nice thing about remote compiz is it actually IMPROVED performance and reduced bandwidth usage
08:53
we measured that at the time
08:54
<alkisg>
If there's enough memory for pixmap caching, I imagine that's ok, but I wasn't able to reproduce that since I've heard about that case
08:54
<warren>
(when compared to a non-composited desktop)
08:55
<alkisg>
I always got software 3d in the clients, so it always sucked
08:55
<warren>
my test case was a Thinkpad T41 with Radeon 7500 client
08:55* alkisg used an intel atom netbook, which runs 3d locally fine
08:55
<warren>
it broke early 2009 AFAIK
08:56
something changed in X, compiz, or somewhere in between
08:56
<alkisg>
warren: doesn't f17 use mutter instead of compiz?
08:56
<warren>
yeah, Fedora now uses GNOME3
08:57
<alkisg>
So, we'd need to troubleshoot 2 compositors...
08:57
<warren>
GNOME3 didn't happen until like fedora 16 I think
08:57
IMHO, LTSP on Fedora should use Mate
08:57* alkisg is using gnome-fallback for greek schools
08:57
<warren>
with software compositing, the GNOME team planned on dropping support for fallback
08:57Phantomas has left IRC (Phantomas!~Phantomas@ubuntu/member/phantomas, Ping timeout: 252 seconds)
08:58
<warren>
not sure how that's going now
08:58
<alkisg>
The same. Well, we'll keep ubuntu 12.04 for 2 years and then check for a wayland-based implementation
08:58
Which might be vnc/rdp like for thin clients, and normal for fats
08:58
(2 years or even more, if needed)
08:59bobby_C has joined IRC (bobby_C!~bobby@85-124-22-227.teleworker.xdsl-line.inode.at)
09:00
<warren>
alkisg: I would investigate what exactly changed that broke remote compiz ~2009
09:00
alkisg: it worked GREAT before that
09:01
<alkisg>
warren: hmmm does that also mean that programs that required 3d, like google earth, worked also OK at that point?
09:02
<warren>
alkisg: i don't remember trying google earth, but glxgears worked on the side of a spinning cube
09:02
<alkisg>
That sounds great
09:03
<warren>
I don't remember when DRI2 actually happened
09:03
<alkisg>
There's also virtualgl for 3d over the network, not sure if that would be needed if remote compiz/3d worked fine out of the box
09:03
<warren>
3D on the spinning cube was only possible after DRI2
09:03
DRI2 brought indirect direct rendering
09:05
http://hoegsberg.blogspot.com/2008/03/i-just-committed-last-bit-of-dri2-work.html
09:06
early 2008 DRI2 was committed ....
09:06
october 2008 was my last known confirmation of working remote compiz
09:06
early 2009 I was reassigned to work on a different project, so I didn't test it much. I just noticed it broke with some kind of abort.
