is there a tool/script/whatever that can re-create all users/group from one system to the other, including acl and preserving user id, so if I then move their homes everything is ok?
12:22
<Llama_be>
markit: you could just copy /etp/{passwd,shadow,group} to the new system to create all users with correct userid and groupid.
12:23adrianorg_ has joined IRC (adrianorg_!~adrianorg@186.215.17.47)

<Llama_be>
the acl, they are part of the permissions of a file I think, so if you move them over in a way you preserve permissions, you should be fine then
12:26
<knipwim>
Llama_be: i really don't know, although i'm inclined to think it's the kernel or initramfs
12:28
<Llama_be>
knipwim: this would be a correct pxe configuration, right: http://pastebin.com/b6wZEajJ
12:29
<knipwim>
yes
12:30
if the issue is in the initramfs, you wouldn't be able to do a local boot as well, using init=/bin/bash
12:31
<Llama_be>
I have not modified the kernel, I have simply run ltsp-build-client and this is the one it produced.
12:33
<knipwim>
and this worked previously? like not changing anything on the kernel, just using the defaults?

knipwim: I've never been able to pass the init= parameter, but with the 5.2 client, I didn't really have to
12:34
altough at one point I tried, for troubleshooting purposes
12:37
<knipwim>
it seems like none of your init parameters get passed on
12:37
so it might be an initrams/genkernel issue

and omg, first nbd boot!
12:46
<Llama_be>
knipwim: and I think I've found another issue too, with downloading the lts.conf file in 5.3: it tries to download tftp://ip/ltsp/x86/lts.conf, but that should be i686 now, I believe
12:47
<knipwim>
no
12:47
<Llama_be>
in 05-getltsconffile some magic is done to change i686 to x86, but for me, the directory it is put in is i686
12:47
<knipwim>
ah
12:48
good to know
12:48
i'll look into that

12:49
<Llama_be>
I can fix that for myself easily enough, just thought you wanted to know ;)
12:49
<knipwim>
thx
12:49
never noticed, because i build the kernel seperately
12:53
<Llama_be>
In the wiki it says "This tutorial uses i686 as architecture for the client install (x86 before ltsp-server-5.2.19)", so I guess this is just still an artifact of 5.2.19 where it had to be x86
12:53
<knipwim>
i left it there, because i though the tftp downloading occurred seperately from the build process
12:54
apparently i overlooked the update-kernels
12:57
<Llama_be>
if you built your kernels seperately, you are also not testing with the standard kernel if init= works for you?
12:57
<knipwim>
no
12:58
using an old 3.0.6 kernel and dracut initrd
12:58
<Llama_be>
genkernel or not?
12:58
<knipwim>
not, dracut
12:58
<Llama_be>
ah, don't know what that is :)
12:59
<knipwim>
http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/utils/boot/dracut/dracut.html#dracut.kernel
13:02
although i can't really recommend that yet
13:02
unless you want to do a lot of tinkering
13:03
<Llama_be>
no, am not going to try either ;) I'm going to see if I can get it to work with the genkernel, and report back, so you could fix if there's a fix to be made ;)
13:03
<knipwim>
hehe, i can also send you my kernel and initramfs

hmm, probably not the same hardware
13:04
i'm testing on an aspire one
13:05
<Llama_be>
nah, I'd rather have it working correctly at this point, than do a quick fix to patch it up ;)
13:06
<knipwim>
no, just to determine if it's in the initramfs
13:06
have you tried #gentoo btw?
13:07
<Llama_be>
I was going to, but thought I should first test with a normal machine if i can pass init= to a genkernel
13:07
unfortunately I have custom compiled my kernels for the physical machines
13:07
so I can't do a quick reboot and check
13:08
<knipwim>
can't you boot the thin client?
13:08
or are you testing with a vm
13:09
<Llama_be>
I'm testing in vm, but don't really understand what you mean with booting the thin client?
13:11
<knipwim>
like putting the chroot image on a harddrive, and plug it in
13:11
and boot from the hd

<alkisg>
Hello
17:28
<srdjo>
do you know some workaround for reading user keyring on fat clients - it looks like users cant save any password
17:29
<alkisg>
srdjo: the login manager, ldm, doesn't unlock locked keyrings, but other than that everything should work...
17:30
So, unlocked keyring should work without a password, and locked keyrings should just prompt the user
17:33
<srdjo>
I am trying to save empathy account passwords, it asks for default keyring password but it doesnt save anything - none of the users used it before - do you think it would work if I just reset keyring password to empty one ?
17:34
<alkisg>
Maybe... but it sounds like a keyring bug that you should report

We're also thinking to bump the version to 0.5
20:47
And I don't know if it would be better to release 0.5 without all the translations, and 0.5.1 with them,
20:47
or wait for a few days more to get the translations and release 0.5 completely ready
20:48
Maybe leave it for the next friday or so, to have a completely ready 0.5 release that hopefully don't need any changes for precise + wheezy?
20:48
*won't
20:59
<stgraber>
alkisg: please upload to Ubuntu before Thursday 21:00 UTC
20:59
after that we are in beta2 freeze and nothing goes in
20:59
<alkisg>
stgraber: thank you, will do
21:00
stgraber: translations can be uploaded after that too, right?
21:00
<stgraber>
alkisg: yeah, we can probably do a last upload after that before the final release
21:01
<alkisg>
Cool, so we'll tag+upload 0.5 on Monday or whenever else vagrantc can, and maybe upload 0.5.1 with translations + minor bug fixes before the final release
21:07
<vagrantc>
alkisg: i'll only have time to work on it monday
21:08
<alkisg>
Thanks, we'll try to have it ready till then
21:08
<vagrantc>
alkisg: i might be able to cram in an upload late wednesday
21:08
<alkisg>
That would be the best, if possible ^
21:08
It would give us more time for testing, as there were many changes

<vagrantc>
alkisg: if we get it ready for upload monday, and only do trivial or translation fixes, i could maybe upload monday
21:09
er, wednesday
21:09
or i could actually upload on monday, and re-upload on wednesday
21:09
i.e. 0.5 monday, 0.5.1 wednesday night
21:09
<alkisg>
Sounds like a good plan
21:10
So we'll have 0.5 ready on monday, but only with little testing, and we'll upload the translations + any minor bug fixes on wednesday, nice
21:11
Thank you :)
21:19
Ouch too late for the LTSP things I wanted to prepare though... I thought we'd have until the end of the month
21:20
Anyway, I'll just upload a new LTSP version in the Greek schools PPA for Precise again

<stgraber>
I'm planning an LTSP upload for thursday
21:32
<vagrantc>
stgraber: cool, i'll maybe follow up with it on friday, then, test as much as i can monday...
21:32
hopefully have it ready to just use your tarball, since mine process for generating them is wonkus.

<stgraber>
alkisg: I had a quick look at the release schedule, we are entering beta2 freeze next week on Thursday, then unfreezing the next Thursday right after beta2, then freezing for good on the 12th of April
23:19
alkisg: so if there are bugfixes you want to get in 12.04, I'll still do some uploads as late as the 12th
23:20
alkisg: that basically still gives us a bit less than a month for more bugfixes
