04:58* vagrantc waves to alkisg
04:58
<alkisg>
Hi vagrantc, hi all
04:59risca has left IRC (risca!~risca@wi-secure-6897.cc.umanitoba.ca, Quit: Lämnar)
04:59* vagrantc built an ext4 NBD image, booted to it without the LTSP code ...
04:59
<vagrantc>
it really works... it's great.
05:00
and since it's an editable image, don't even need publish-image or any of that,.
05:00
<alkisg>
vagrantc: also try compressed btrfs, I think I'll put support in ltsp-update-image for that ;)
05:00
I.e. ltsp-update-image --rsync or something
05:00
<vagrantc>
alkisg: with the debian create-fs-image plugin, it's already there.
05:01
although i don't know if i need to do anything fancy with btrfs at filesystem creation time to get all the features we might want.
05:01
<alkisg>
How do you decide the size of the loopback image?
05:01
<vagrantc>
alkisg: it's essentially hardcoded.
05:01
<alkisg>
Not at creation; at mount time -o compress
05:02
<vagrantc>
so, depending on the mount options, some files may end up compressed, and some not?
05:02
if you mount it differently each time?
05:02
<alkisg>
What I also wonder about is whether such a loopback device would be fast if mounted over NFS (as a single file)
05:02stgraber has left IRC (stgraber!~stgraber@ubuntu/member/stgraber, Quit: kernel update)
05:02
<alkisg>
(08:02:34 πμ) vagrantc: so, depending on the mount options, some files may end up compressed, and some not? => yup
05:03
<vagrantc>
wacky
05:03
<alkisg>
That might solve the NBD disconnect/reconnect issues, and it would actually work with an unmodified initramfs without any ltsp/nbd code in it
05:03
<vagrantc>
alkisg: you still have NFS's protocol overhead, which is kind of talky.
05:05* vagrantc has been using LTSP to test a new kernel variant for armhf that's supported in qemu :)

hey ya all. iam in to the setting up pxe boot menu and all that stuff, BUT! i have a image, this test it is a image of a win08 server. how do i serve that as an option? and actually make it work? so that i can select that from the boot menu, and it wil install win08 ?
08:17
<alkisg>
JensenDan: you should be asking that question in #windows, linux users know nothing about windows network booting
08:17
(in general :))
08:18

:D
08:18
it is running on a ltsp server ;)

iam running ltsp, and have the pxe boot and all that kind works perfectly, i have the image in i386, and set it to that image in the menu, but i just dont know what to set the kernel!? and, what is the kernel.

alkisg, i did something similar. you have to use a tftp server that can remap windows's path separators... ie from \ to / i used tftpd-hpa; i used pxelinux and it's vesameny , and configured dhcp as normal; then you need to chainload microsoft's net loader. and give the image as a argument ; sdi.c32 might be an option for you, but the system i was on did not make compatibe limages.
10:28
http://www.etherboot.org/wiki/tftp_backslash/tftpd-hpa?DokuWiki=e93f5757705303bde32c8ecdecfa9329
10:28
images we used was made acording to ; http://www.deployvista.com/Home/tabid/36/EntryID/54/language/sv-SE/Default.aspx
10:29
<alkisg>
sep: I'm not the one interested for windows booting; JensenDan is, but also the main problem is that you need to install san or other drivers for windows to be able to netboot
10:29
And you need one image for each client, which is very annoying
10:29
If I ever had need for windows clients, I'd send a single VM over LTSP fat clients
10:30
<sep>
alkisg, sorry for the wrong nick :)

np :)

all your points are correct tho. my points are just for booting. :)
10:33
JensenDan, I think a san with writeable snapshots. master image is snapshotted into uniq machine images that you can write to. ; then you use gpexlinux and netboot onto iscsi or ataoe ?

ogra_: about your dual arch DVD idea for i386/amd64... a) newer isolinux versions can detect i386 vs amd64 and load the correct kernel, and b) squashfs removes duplicate files, so if you have 1 squashfs image with 2 subdirs, i386/ and amd64/, and pivot_root to one of those dirs from the initramfs, then you don't need double the size, I imagine you need even less than 1.3 the size.
11:16
<ogra_>
oh cool, but it didnt look to me like the idea was generally well recieved
11:18
<alkisg>
du -sh /lib/
11:18
172M /lib/
11:18
If we assume that the arch specific files are only in there, it would mean less than 100mb increase of the squashfs image

hi
15:45Da-Geek has left IRC (Da-Geek!~Da-Geek@11.74.155.90.in-addr.arpa, Quit: Leaving)
15:45
<NeoX>
I'm trying LTSP,
15:46
<andygraybeal_>
go go go!
15:46
it's awesome!
15:46
<NeoX>
for that, i setup an LXC container to be my pxe server and lxc server too
15:46
<andygraybeal_>
what is lxc?
15:46ogra_ has left IRC (ogra_!~ogra@p5098ed03.dip0.t-ipconnect.de, Excess Flood)
15:47
<NeoX>
lxc is kind of virtualisation but only container for service (like openvz)
15:47
<andygraybeal_>
ah i never heard of it; awesome
15:47
i run kvm
15:47
<NeoX>
kvm makes you run virtual pcs inside your linux, where you can put other linux, but also bsd or either win
15:48
lxc can only run other linux
15:48
as it share the same kernel on all guest
15:48ogra_ has joined IRC (ogra_!~ogra@p5098ed03.dip0.t-ipconnect.de)
15:48
<andygraybeal_>
okay, i think i understand thnak you :)
15:48
<NeoX>
but it allows you to have multiple host sharing the network, proc, ram
15:49
isolating you squeeze machine from your ubuntu, to be able to test migration and some stuff
15:49
<alkisg>
NeoX: what is an "lxc server"? did you mean "ltsp server"?
15:49
I've heard about lxc containers, but not about lxc servers...
15:50
<NeoX>
alksig : lxc server (for me) is the machine master the LXC container
15:50
so,
15:50
I got an LXC container that acts as my tftp/pxe/ltsp
15:50
isntalled on ubuntu 12.04 host
15:51
LXC is also 12.04
15:51
<alkisg>
Sounds nice, any problems so far?
15:51
<NeoX>
LTSP is installed from ubuntu package ltsp-server-standalone
15:51
the issue is when using ltsp-build-client
15:51
it did not finish because
15:52
it can't chroot /opt/ltsp/ mount -t proc proc /proc
15:52
:(
15:53
<alkisg>
Is that an lxc restriction?
15:53
<NeoX>
i guess it is a container issue as I dont have this issue if running on the host server
15:53
<alkisg>
(/opt/ltsp/i386, I assume...)
15:53
<NeoX>
if I chroot myself inside /opt/ltsp/i386, I can mount -t proc by hand
15:54
<alkisg>
Do you have the exact line with the error message?
15:54
<NeoX>
same issue if ltsp-build-client in amd64
15:54
I: Extracting xz-utils...
15:54
I: Extracting zlib1g...
15:54
W: Failure trying to run: chroot /opt/ltsp/amd64 mount -t proc proc /proc
15:54
error: LTSP client installation ended abnormally
15:55
<alkisg>
And at that point, if you run sudo chroot /opt/ltsp/amd64 mount -t proc proc /proc, it succeeds ?
15:56
<NeoX>
i'am already root on this container
15:56
if i first run chroot /opt/ltsp/amd64
15:56
then mount it works (saying read only proc)
15:57
and if i run the whole line, yes it works
15:57
but says the block device is read only
15:58
that may explain the exit from the package isntaller
15:58
<alkisg>
Run: chroot /opt/ltsp/amd64 mount -t proc proc /proc && echo it works
15:58
This way you also check the command result
15:59
<NeoX>
i doesn't work ;)
15:59
chroot /opt/ltsp/amd64 mount -t proc proc /proc && echo it works
15:59
mount: block device proc is write-protected, mounting read-only
15:59
mount: cannot mount block device proc read-only
15:59
<alkisg>
OK, it would be an lxc issue then, not sure if people here can help you, maybe some #ubuntu channel would be more apropriate. stgraber has tried lxc containers, not sure if he's available..
16:01
<NeoX>
i'll check on lxc what i can find
16:01
<stgraber>
NeoX: right, that's our apparmor profile blocking it as mounting proc outside /proc in the container bypasses much of the security measures in place for lxc containers
16:01
<NeoX>
thanks alkisg, thanks andygraybeal_
16:01
<stgraber>
NeoX: to allow it anyway, follow the following steps (trying from memory):
16:02
<NeoX>
hi stgraber, thks for joining us
16:02
<stgraber>
NeoX: sudo cp /etc/apparmor.d/lxc/lxc-default /etc/apparmor.d/lxc/lxc-ltsp
16:02
NeoX: edit /etc/apparmor.d/lxc/lxc-ltsp to change the first line (profile lxc-container-default to profile lxc-container-ltsp)
16:03
<NeoX>
on the host or on the container ?
16:03
<stgraber>
NeoX: add a line "mount -> /opt/ltsp/**," to it
16:03
NeoX: host
16:03
NeoX: then: sudo /etc/init.d/apparmor reload
16:03
NeoX: then shutdown your container
16:04
NeoX: edit your container config, uncomment the aa_profile line and set it to lxc-container-ltsp
16:04
NeoX: start your container again
16:04
you can probably also use "lxc.aa_profile = unconfined" that'll bypass apparmor entirely, though that's even worse for security...
16:06
NeoX: https://help.ubuntu.com/12.04/serverguide/serverguide.pdf has a LXC chapter covering the apparmor stuff too
16:09
<NeoX>
ok, first time i play with apparmor
16:09
;)
16:13
well, lxc wont start the container with the new profile (even set on unconfined)
16:14
but that might be the trick as I also read some /proc/fs inside apparmor profile that bog me on starting nfs inside container

16:18
<NeoX>
well, this is a good path to follow, i've downloaded the serverguide,
