I am using Ubuntu Lucid LTSP . I want to set up one of my clients as a Digital photo frame that displays photos from directories recursively. The Pictures screen saver is the only one that does this. However screen savers do not work on the clients. Any ideas?
04:40
<johnny>
it should work from clients
04:41
but you could also just install f-spot
04:41
<sweetpi>
feh can do fullscreen slideshows
04:41
<johnny>
and so can the default graphics app
04:41
i forget what's default in ubuntu
04:41
<frederickjh>
All I get is a black screen when the screen saver is supose to show.
04:41
<johnny>
but really, screensavers should work frederickjh
04:41
<sweetpi>
likely f-spot, I forgot about that
04:41
<johnny>
sure that you're not blanking instead of screenshot ?
04:41
err screensaver*
04:42
try another screensaver
04:42
just so you know which parts' broken.. screensavers on the whole vs just that one having issues
04:42
anyways, it's 5:40am.. i must sleep, try askingagain in a half hour or so as poeple wake up
04:43
<alkisg>
Hmmm too many people reporting screensaver problems with Lucid, maybe something's broken (I don't use screensavers)
04:48
<frederickjh>
I tried another one just now that is three that do not work. just black screen
04:49
<alkisg>
Is it possible to launcher the screensaver from the command line, like a usual program?
04:49
*launch\

That does work on the server but on the client produces the same black screen.
05:06
Thanks for the help guys. It looks like the screen saver is a no go, but I found a program called feh that will do what I want.

Hi. I'm trying to use NVIDIA drivers but when I follow the instructions on http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:KIWI-LTSP_local_applications#Adding_NVIDIA_or_ATI_drivers_into_the_image (specifically running kiwi-ltsp-setup -l) I get this: http://pastie.org/1186688
10:13
And, why is it using things in /usr/share/kiwi/image/ltsp/suse-11.3/ ?? Could that be causing the problem?

<johnny>
it's unnecessary there
12:11
<Kyle__>
johnny: What do you mean?
12:11
<johnny>
oh.. i just thought of one place it's not.. ltsp-remoteapps ..
12:12
because the session is local, how will it know other accounts are logged on
12:12
the X session that is..
12:12
i don't think we pass the kind of information back for it to know that for fat clients
12:12
<Kyle__>
johnny: In my case my users are actually launching VMs on the fat clients. Desktop virtualization software has _no_ thought that the same user may try and use the same vm simultaniously... so it can cause problems.
12:13
<johnny>
same user using a different computer?
12:13* Kyle__ nods
12:13
<johnny>
to access the vm?
12:13
hmm i guess you shoulld try it.. i have no terms around
12:13

It causes major headaches :) like corrupts their image.

<johnny>
but i it doesn't seem like it would
12:13
ah, no alkis to ask
12:13
<Kyle__>
But if you think about it, that option would help in public computer labs. Keep one student from occupying multiple terminals.
12:14
<johnny>
well hmm.. shouldn't that option be on by default.. hmm..
12:16
<Kyle__>
johnny: General unix-usage will be fine, so it kindof makes sense for it to be off. But granular control (max 1 login, max 5 logins, etc) would be ideal.
12:17
<johnny>
sure.. but the logins happen locally
12:17
<grantk>
sorry, got called away. I am running all thin clients still, one user logs into two terminals, runs ok most of the time, but when he hits the same server it will kick him off of course, this can go on for a couple logins in a row if he has the bad luck of being handed that server again.
12:17
<Kyle__>
Take a CS lab. It may make sense for a student to log into two terminals, one for compiling/testing large projects, one for developing.
12:17
<johnny>
how will it know ?
12:17
<Kyle__>
johnny: Oh. Humm. True.
12:17
Is ldm allerted when a user loggs off?
12:17
<johnny>
i mean the X sessions happen locally
12:17* Kyle__ nods.
12:18
<abeehc-_>
gnome-watchdog can tell you
12:18
<johnny>
ldm is run locally too, just not the ssh auth check
12:18
<abeehc-_>
in broken english?
12:18
<johnny>
abeehc-_, not for fat clients it can't
12:18
<Kyle__>
Humm. Interesting problem.
12:18
<johnny>
Kyle__, alkisg is already working on this sorta
12:18
<Kyle__>
johnny, what isn't alksig working on?
12:18
<abeehc-_>
fision
12:19
<johnny>
mostly by a 2 way interface between lts.conf on client and server checking
12:19
so you can tell the server what you have and it can pass you to the right app server or whatnot
12:19
<Kyle__>
abeehc-_: Neat.
12:19
<johnny>
Kyle__, atm i think you'd have to just limit the ssh session on the server
12:19
<Kyle__>
That's not hard.
12:19
<johnny>
probably a way you can say, allow unlimited connections from X user from this one IP
12:20
tat way you can still get new terminals
12:20* Kyle__ nods
12:20
<johnny>
but not use others
12:20
other physical computers that is..
12:20
alkisg is not working on all the stuff other people are working on :)
12:21* Kyle__ sighs.

My dell inspiron 1100 thin client is giving me troubles. Newer machines run great. Upon login it starts but then I get: process 256 glib warning: **: getpwuid_r (): failed due to unknown user id (0). So I made an entry in: /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/lts.conf saying something like: ################

12:39
<grantk>
Jappercr1, I know the getpwuid_r() error is nothing to worry about, that is unrelated, I see it quite often and see it at home on my Kubuntu desktop
12:41
<jappiecr1>
ok, thenks. So what can it be than?
12:42

12:59

do you get a login screen?

or does that not even come up?

if you get a login screen, but it crashes when logging in, try:
13:00
!compiz
13:00
<ltspbot>
Gadi: "compiz" :: if compiz is giving you problems, one way to disable it for all users is: sudo gconftool-2 --direct --config-source xml:readwrite:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.mandatory --type string --set /desktop/gnome/session/required_components/windowmanager metacity
13:02

if it crashes after some use, it may simply have too little memory -> look into using NBD_SWAP or adding more memory to the unit
