I am using Ubuntu Lucid LTSP . I want to set up one of my clients as a Digital photo frame that displays photos from directories recursively. The Pictures screen saver is the only one that does this. However screen savers do not work on the clients. Any ideas?
it should work from clients
but you could also just install f-spot
feh can do fullscreen slideshows
and so can the default graphics app
i forget what's default in ubuntu
All I get is a black screen when the screen saver is supose to show.
but really, screensavers should work frederickjh
likely f-spot, I forgot about that
sure that you're not blanking instead of screenshot ?
try another screensaver
just so you know which parts' broken.. screensavers on the whole vs just that one having issues
anyways, it's 5:40am.. i must sleep, try askingagain in a half hour or so as poeple wake up
Hmmm too many people reporting screensaver problems with Lucid, maybe something's broken (I don't use screensavers)
I tried another one just now that is three that do not work. just black screen
Is it possible to launcher the screensaver from the command line, like a usual program?
|04:52||ogra_ac has quit IRC|
alkisg, gnome-screensaver-command --activate
That does work on the server but on the client produces the same black screen.
Thanks for the help guys. It looks like the screen saver is a no go, but I found a program called feh that will do what I want.

Hi. I'm trying to use NVIDIA drivers but when I follow the instructions on http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:KIWI-LTSP_local_applications#Adding_NVIDIA_or_ATI_drivers_into_the_image (specifically running kiwi-ltsp-setup -l) I get this: http://pastie.org/1186688
And, why is it using things in /usr/share/kiwi/image/ltsp/suse-11.3/ ?? Could that be causing the problem?

are you logging in as root?
Hello, Are you able to allow a user to login to the same server twice with ltsp-cluster?
not logged in as root
i think I got it;
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config/DontZap#Using the command line
|12:01||Mixologic_ has joined #ltsp|
Appiah: Does that work with ltsp-cluster? I do not see it set on my Admin page, then when I go check the rdp+ldm.config it is not listed

Appiah: Will that work with fat-clients? The LDM_LIMIT_ONE_SESSION=TRUE?
|12:08||japerry has joined #ltsp|
it's unnecessary there
johnny: What do you mean?
oh.. i just thought of one place it's not.. ltsp-remoteapps ..
because the session is local, how will it know other accounts are logged on
the X session that is..
i don't think we pass the kind of information back for it to know that for fat clients
johnny: In my case my users are actually launching VMs on the fat clients. Desktop virtualization software has _no_ thought that the same user may try and use the same vm simultaniously... so it can cause problems.
same user using a different computer?
|12:13||* Kyle__ nods|
to access the vm?
hmm i guess you shoulld try it.. i have no terms around
It causes major headaches :) like corrupts their image.
|12:13||Lenhix has left #ltsp|
but i it doesn't seem like it would
ah, no alkis to ask
But if you think about it, that option would help in public computer labs. Keep one student from occupying multiple terminals.
well hmm.. shouldn't that option be on by default.. hmm..
johnny: General unix-usage will be fine, so it kindof makes sense for it to be off. But granular control (max 1 login, max 5 logins, etc) would be ideal.
sure.. but the logins happen locally
sorry, got called away. I am running all thin clients still, one user logs into two terminals, runs ok most of the time, but when he hits the same server it will kick him off of course, this can go on for a couple logins in a row if he has the bad luck of being handed that server again.
Take a CS lab. It may make sense for a student to log into two terminals, one for compiling/testing large projects, one for developing.
how will it know ?
johnny: Oh. Humm. True.
Is ldm allerted when a user loggs off?
i mean the X sessions happen locally
|12:17||* Kyle__ nods.|
gnome-watchdog can tell you
ldm is run locally too, just not the ssh auth check
in broken english?
abeehc-_, not for fat clients it can't
Humm. Interesting problem.
Kyle__, alkisg is already working on this sorta
johnny, what isn't alksig working on?
mostly by a 2 way interface between lts.conf on client and server checking
so you can tell the server what you have and it can pass you to the right app server or whatnot
Kyle__, atm i think you'd have to just limit the ssh session on the server
That's not hard.
probably a way you can say, allow unlimited connections from X user from this one IP
tat way you can still get new terminals
|12:20||* Kyle__ nods|
but not use others
other physical computers that is..
alkisg is not working on all the stuff other people are working on :)
|12:21||* Kyle__ sighs.|
My dell inspiron 1100 thin client is giving me troubles. Newer machines run great. Upon login it starts but then I get: process 256 glib warning: **: getpwuid_r (): failed due to unknown user id (0). So I made an entry in: /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/lts.conf saying something like: ################
# Dell inspiron 1100
SOUND=true. When I put on color depth on 16 it crashed immiediatly. When put on 8 it starts and I get to do some things but than it crashes into the same error...user id unknow? Any ideas?
Jappercr1, I know the getpwuid_r() error is nothing to worry about, that is unrelated, I see it quite often and see it at home on my Kubuntu desktop
ok, thenks. So what can it be than?
the client that works fine is accessing the same server?
yes...setting up edubuntu 10.04 classroom server
Do the logs show anything when the client crashes?
|12:50||dlezcano has joined #ltsp|
it seems that the thin client is running now in 8 bits color mode!
now the questions how to get running in 16bits? You can't really work/see anything in 8bits..
good, I am not much help on the color modes myself, I have never had that problem so have not had to figure it out. Sorry.
yeah, sorry could not help
Anybody else has experience with this??
do you get a login screen?
or does that not even come up?
if you get a login screen, but it crashes when logging in, try:
Gadi: "compiz" :: if compiz is giving you problems, one way to disable it for all users is: sudo gconftool-2 --direct --config-source xml:readwrite:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.mandatory --type string --set /desktop/gnome/session/required_components/windowmanager metacity
if it crashes after some use, it may simply have too little memory -> look into using NBD_SWAP or adding more memory to the unit

no init or any kernel messages or anything
any suggestions or how can i debug this? i can't see much in the server logs

zamba: yeah, ltsp-update-sshkeys
abeehc-_: where should i type that? on the server? in the chroot?
