While updating ltsp-server:
NOTE: you will probably want to add to /etc/exports:
and then run:
invoke-rc.d nfs-kernel-server reload
Well, I'm not using an NFS chroot, so I guess I shouldn't be seeing that warning?
sure.. but you can't set what type you're using from ltsp-build-client
i think your only recourse on ubuntu is by deleting the plugin
johnny: I just received an update, I didn't call ltsp-build-client...

Hi, I have 2 chroot environments (lenny and squeeze). Some Thin Clients are booting lenny other are booting squeeze.All lenny TC are booting fine. The problem is with the squeeze TC. The client booted and at the end an error shows up shortly "hostname: forward host lookup failed, resource temporary unavailable". The client boots further and the LDM login screen comes. After login a popup appears with "Enter the name of the host you want to login to".
After entering the hostname the first error appears again and I get the ldm screen again. Why is chroot lenny working fine and squeeze not (in the same server)? Any ideas, many thanks

did you see my commit over the weekend?
Yup, but I didn't yet test it
ah ok, let me know if that works for you
|09:12||* Gadi is going to be traveling for the next 2 weeks, so I will have intermittent access|
Hmmm I could tell you in a minute, I just updated with stgraber's ppa, hold on...
did stgraber update that?
I think so
cool. I didn't test for "flickerfree-ness" bec I am not 100% sure I know what that looks like (and also, I prefer stability first and flickerfree-ness second)
test #1, OK: SCREEN_02=shell SCREEN_10=shell SCREEN_11=ldm
btw, I wonder, does that new way also save memory?
I.e. if I never switch to SCREEN_02, do I save the bash memory?
test #2, FAILED on vbox: SCREEN_02=shell SCREEN_10=ldm SCREEN_11=shell
Gadi, I can't switch to vt10 in this case
It also failed on real hardware, i.e. I could not switch to vt10, but it also booted and left me on vt1 instead of vt11.
alkisg: when you switch, it may take 2 secs before the screen comes up
Yup, but that's not it
I can't switch at all
I'm left on the same vt...
boy, that's weird
test #3: half failure
in other words, it never inits the other vts?
SCREEN_02=shell SCREEN_05=ldm SCREEN_09=shell
In this case, it started on vt5
(I'd expect it to start to vt9)
Otherwise it worked
Gadi: it does init the command-line vts, but not ldm
are you sure my code is in there?
|09:28||methril_work_ has joined #ltsp|
I do have SCREEN_DEFAULT in /etc/init.d/ltsp-client-core
Gadi, keep in mind that something in lucid may be switching the active vt after our code is ran...
can you try removing the "-s" from the openvt line in screen_session?
Gadi: I tried to manually run openvt -c 10 /bin/bash
Then, I was able to switch to it
Then, ldm was started normally :)
(that's in test#2)
alternatively, it may be all that backgrounding of openvt stuff in screen_session which is unnecessary now
|09:34||mikkel_ has joined #ltsp|
|09:34||ball has joined #ltsp|
without the -s, I was left in vt1
|09:37||ball has quit IRC|
Gadi, I wonder if we could move your waiting code to a wrapper,
i.e. `openvt -c tty wrapper_script screen_script`
That wrapper script would wait until the console is active, and _then_ it would call the screen_script (ldm or...)
alkisg: well, I suppose it could be a screen-session.d/ script
The difference in this case is that openvt happens before we switch to that vt
So I imagine that would solve my problem where I can't switch to the vt with ldm...
alkisg: alternatively, maybe screen_session should be called with openvt
But which vt? we should move some code then
|09:44||gentgeen__ has quit IRC|
|09:44||* alkisg wonders how does upstart fit in all of this...|
your tests definitely seem to suggest that before openvt is called, none of the other vt's are active
which is weird
The first 6 ones are
console-setup has a configuration file in which the default is tty[1-6]
|09:45||gentgeen__ has joined #ltsp|
no clue about my question?
|09:46||* Gadi votes we revert back to LTSP4's logical use of vt1 ;)|
methril_work_: are you talking about the rootfs or some other mount?
rootfs is shared, so it should always be read-only on the client
anything you write to should be in a tmpfs
or other writable mount
but the mount at client show every mount as rw
that you mount later
methril_work_: what distro?
squeeze & lenny
and you don't get an error on the client if you do: touch /tmp/foo
it should tell you that its a read-only fs
on the *client* (ie from a client shell session)
yes on the client
not in a gnome-terminal window in your session
What does `hostname` tell you on the client?
ltsp123 or your server name?
in the client (ltsp client)
|09:51||gentgeen__ has quit IRC|
So if you type hostname, what do you get?
(the ltsp client nam)
Can you type `mount` and upload it in the pastebin?
(and maybe, cat /etc/fstab)...

Gadi: and you can switch to vt10?
|10:44||* alkisg shrugs|
I get it in a vbox client and in an ati client
Gadi, what do you have in pxelinux.cfg/default?
let me rebuild a chroot
I think I have one from archive with just the two changes I made
and not the upstream one
I can only switch between vt1 and vt11
but not to vt10
I think X needs the vt on the command line, or openvt before that

I'm having trouble installing a firefox extension for my ltsp clients
this is what i'm doing
sudo cp ~/Desktop/my-extension.xpi /opt/ltsp/i386/tmp
sudo chroot /opt/ltsp/i386/tmp
sudo firefox -install-global-extensions my-extension.xpi
Wow, firefox supports a -install-global-extensions parameter?!
if that's what you typed, the chroot command will most likely fail ...
why will the chroot command fail
laron: because you should chroot to /opt/ltsp/i386
laron: not i386/tmp
i did chroot i386/tmp
i mean i386/
i rebuild the image of course, then when i login to a client and open firefox, i get the error
install.rdb is not installed
not the exact ".rdb" extension
so its like it worked but this extension file is not allowing it to run
i'll post any progress, otherwise let me know if anyone has a solution
or, how do you add extensions for all your clients who run firefox locally?
the ones i want to add are already in the repo.. guess i'm lucky
apt-get install mozilla-firefox-adblock flashplugin-nonfree
otherwise.. i'd suggest searching the internet. or asking on the firefox/moz irc channel
ok, ill see what firefox/moz can offer

the installation of firefox -install-global-extensions my-extension.xpi does work when i install it on the server
i think the reason it is not working when i install it for my clients through chroot is because of a permission problem

logged as a client? or on the server?
On the client, from a local terminal
alkisg: "localxterm" :: while sitting on a thin client, open a gnome terminal. In that, run: ltsp-localapps xterm. An xterm will open. That xterm runs locally, so any commands you enter there are executed directly on the client.
Try to run firefox in that local terminal
or look in ~/.xsession-errors
ok i get a ~/.pangorc permission denied

apt-get install mozilla-firefox
err apt-get install firefox
didn't we already go over this?
and then apt-get install <packaged extension>
you're gonna have to ask somewhere else for the cli switched to install unpackaged extensions tho
like in the firefox/moz channel
yes we did, im double checking. i just tried installing an extension that is in the repository, and no luck there either
yet, chroot /opt/ltsp/i386
works, showing the installed extensions

once i install it in chroot /opt/ltsp/i386, does the client need access to the internet to finish the install once they log in?
