Morning all
08:52
<cliebow_>
Hey!!
08:55
<sbalneav>
Hey cliebow_
08:55
Saw yesterday you didn't get a job. You not working at the school anymore?
08:55
<cliebow_>
i am still..
08:56
but getting disgusted
08:56
i had my oar in at College of the Atlantic
08:56
<sbalneav>
What's up?
08:56
<cliebow_>
but they say they found someone "more qualified
08:56
"
08:56
<sbalneav>
If you don't mind my asking?
08:57
<cliebow_>
they are trying to consolidate schools to "save money"
08:57
our superintendent already jumped ship
08:57
and left the state..
08:57Blinny has joined #ltsp
08:58
<cliebow_>
state subsidy for ellsworth is short now about a million so everything seems to bre on the block
08:58
<sbalneav>
ah, yeah. "The Axe". Lots of atrocities get perpetrated in the name of the almighty dollar.
08:59
<cliebow_>
i am at a standstill with ltsp here..the donated terminals wont run a 2.6 kernel..and there is no money to replace
08:59
i thought id lost the entire lab ..
08:59
but i guess at least that survived
08:59
<sbalneav>
What terminals are these?
08:59tux_440volt has joined #ltsp
09:00
<cliebow_>
netvista pos
09:00
perfect size
09:00
require an uncompressed kernel;
09:01
<sbalneav>
Will an older ltsp version work?
09:01
<cliebow_>
yes..4,1 works fine
09:01
<sbalneav>
Stick with that for the moment then.
09:01
<cliebow_>
but i cant justify to much dev work on ltsp 5 8~(
09:01
<sbalneav>
:)
09:01
<cliebow_>
so i have a little test network..but no mandate to deploy
09:02
<sbalneav>
So, no-ones gotten a 2.6 kernel to work on a netvista?
09:02
<cliebow_>
college of the Atlantic is big on zero carbon footprint..i thought it would be perfect place for ltsp
09:02
no one has..
09:02
on a 2200 that is
09:02
the 2800 will work
09:03
that ibm guy worked on it
09:03
<sbalneav>
Well, you can still just put ltsp4.1 on edubuntu. What's the diff between a 2200 and a 2800?
09:03
<cliebow_>
ummm..pbranger
09:03
2800 has a bios that willpxe
09:04
2200 is proprietary..
09:04
scottie..i just havnt the justification to rebuild..
09:05
<sbalneav>
Hmm, bummer.
09:05
I can see why you want out. So what are they suggesting? Just not have a lab at all?
09:05
<cliebow_>
our tech coordinator booked it as well..he was a champion for ltsp
09:05
yeah..just ;leave the the two windows labs
09:06
also apple is pushing hard to be the os for Maine schools
09:06
<sbalneav>
Does the school division have a "old machine return policy"? Maybe you can get a bunch of abandoned old dell desktops or something for nothing.
09:07
<cliebow_>
just now decided to augment the laptop initiative
09:07
i have bunches of old dells..and etherboot cards going begging for a place to deploy
09:08
COA looked like a real great place to deploy ltsp
09:08
<sbalneav>
Why not toss them in?
09:08
<cliebow_>
i have already where i can..
09:09
<sbalneav>
But you can't sub for the netvistas?
09:09
<cliebow_>
it becomes a space problem too
09:09
yeah it could be done..
09:10
this job is becoming apple-centric..
09:11
<sbalneav>
Well, lets put it this way. Given the choice between being forced to work with Apples and being forced to work with MS, I know which one *I'D* choose as being more sane :)
09:12
<cliebow_>
yeah i guess..but im actively looking for some unix..jackson lab does a fair amount of unix
09:13
and better than 30 grand a year
09:14
<sbalneav>
Well, if you ever need a reference for your committment to Linux/Free Software, let me know!
09:14
<cliebow_>

I'd mutch prefer it if you kept me plastered. :)
09:17

feeling is mutual..i'm trying to give up cigarettes..so that sounds not half bad..
09:18
<sbalneav>
Giving up cigs is like giving yourself a couple thousand dollar a year raise.
09:18
And that's AFTER TAX money, too.
09:18
<cliebow_>
yeah i know..but just one wouldnt hurt anything now would it...

Hi all. I'm trying to use `xlock' on an LTSP terminal in order to password-protect an active login session. When I enter the `xlock' command in xterm, it does nothing but give the error message: "xlock: can not lock ws101.ltsp's display". Using LTSP 4.2 in combination with Slackware 11.0. Any ideas?

<sir_veja>
is it possible to run ltsp without dhcpd?
13:56
<jammcq>
vagrantc: ah, cool
13:56yanu has quit IRC
13:56
<jammcq>
sir_veja: no, it's really required
13:56
<sir_veja>
welll
13:56
For what?
13:56
I have the boot rom running
13:56
I have the server going
13:56
<jammcq>
to get the IP address, and to get the filename of the kernel to download
13:56
<sir_veja>
But i have the file there
13:56
<jammcq>
and to get the path to mount as its root filesystem
13:56
where ?
13:57
<sir_veja>
rom-atic has static ip address working
13:57
<jammcq>
how is the thin client going to know its own IP address ?
13:57
<sir_veja>
and the machine botts
13:57
throug kernel parameters
13:57
I know that's possible
13:57
<jammcq>
that's fine for the bootrom, but once the Linux kernel starts running, it's going to use DHCP to go get the IP address again
13:58
<sir_veja>
where can i change the boot parametr?
13:58
<jammcq>
you'd have to muck with the initramfs, to tell it to NOT use dhcp
13:58
why not just go ahead and use dhcp ?
13:59
<sir_veja>
I'll Explain
13:59
I want to put the kiosks behind 3 routers
13:59
and dhcp is not routable
14:00
I really need static IPS!
14:00
<vagrantc>
have fun.

<jammcq>
sir_veja: what version of LTSP ?
14:01
<sir_veja>
4.2
14:02
everything was working fine
14:02
until the school told me
14:02
<jammcq>
well, you'd have to take the initramfs image, and unpack it. then edit the 'init' script to tell it to NOT call dhclient, and then hardcode the settings for ifconfig, and hardcode the root-path setting
14:02
<sir_veja>
that dhcp was a no no
14:02
14:03
can we pvt jammcq?
14:03
<jammcq>
I've already told you what you need to do
14:03
I don't really have time to spoon feed the answers. Like I said, LTSP doesn't support that.
14:04lmveloso has quit IRC

<sir_veja>
ok
14:05
but etterboot also get initramfs?
14:05cliebow_ has joined #ltsp
14:05
<sir_veja>
i though that was only with pxe
14:05
<sbalneav>
Yes, etherboot also gets the initramfs
14:06
<jammcq>
the difference is, with etherboot, the initramfs is appended to the kernel, so only one big file is downloaded
14:06
pulling that apart is trickier
14:06
you'll need mknbi installed
14:07
<cliebow_>
Thunder!! my /boot disappeared..
14:07
<vagrantc>
sir_veja: what you propose to do is very complicated. if you don't already know what you need to do, and how complicated it is, and how much how work it is ...
14:07
<jammcq>
then, you could take the initramfs and kernel from the pxe directory, modify the initramfs, then combine them with mknbi
14:07
<sir_veja>
thank

heading to Portland for OSCON next week, but purely as an attendee
15:37
no stress
15:37
<prpplague>
jammcq: why brazil?

15:45
<prpplague>
jammcq: yea, i find alot of the conferences are more userland oriented these days
15:45
jammcq: from what i hear OLS has dropped alot since the change in the kernel summit
15:45
<jammcq>
yeah, I didn't go, partly because of that
15:45
I might go next yr tho
15:46
<prpplague>

no slight at all against you jamie, but something that simple should not have to be asked to be understood in a desktop environment.

hey jammcq -- got any main hacking times in mind at oscon?
21:51
<jammcq>
hmm, nothing setup yet
21:51
i'll be in tuturials all day monday and tuesday
21:51
but i'll be around all afternoon sunday, and monday/tuesday eve might be good
21:51
<dberkholz>
i won't even be there yet till wednesday, or tues night at the earliest
21:52
<jammcq>
hmm, i'm trying to find out when Ogra will be leaving
21:52
he's there for UbuntuLive, which goes through tuesday
21:52
so he might be leaving before you get there
21:52
<dberkholz>
if people are already leaving by then, i might be able to make a special trip on sunday
21:52
just for the day
21:53
<jammcq>
I'll be there until about noon on friday
21:53
<dberkholz>
kinda odd to not stick around for oscon if you're already there, though
21:53
<jammcq>
and i've got something to do from 5-7pm on wednesday
21:53

only party i can't avoid is thurs night 6-8:30. other stuff is flexible
21:54
i might just try to get some work done during the day whenever there aren't any incredible sessions going
21:54
<jammcq>
yeah, but oscon is expensive, and i'm sure that canonical hasn't paid his admission to that
21:54
which one's thursday night?
21:54
<dberkholz>
the exhibit hall is free, and the "hallway track" of course
21:54
open source lab
21:54
<jammcq>
heh, "hallway track" is often the best one
21:54
<dberkholz>
i'm not paying admission. i'm looking into a press pass, but if not i'll be just doing that
21:55
<jammcq>
sourceforge is having a party thursday evening too
21:55
<dberkholz>
oh yeah? i don't really know anyone running it, so probably not gonna get an invite
21:56
i'm doing osl thurs, and maybe sun wednesday
21:56
otherwise doing some hacking wednesday
21:56
<jammcq>
i'm sure that Randall Schwartz will be having one of his parties, so i'm gonna try and make sure i'm available for that
