In ltsp20 is there a persistent overlay mode? I'm migrating some old diskless mythtbuntu frontends that used nbd squashfs from a chroot overlayed with writable NFS.
17:44
<alkisg>
vandebo: so the goal is that is client could have different programs etc?
17:46
<vandebo>
Possibly yes - The same base image with small, but inconsistent variations
17:47
I have an idea on how to make it work, but if there's a suggested/supported mode in the new ltsp, I'd take that route
17:56
<alkisg>
But then updating the base image would break all child variations
17:57
<vandebo>
Not in most cases - many packages don't interact. Besides, it's how this system was working.
18:00
<alkisg>
I mean, it's not an interesting use case that upstream devs would go into lengths to support
18:00
That said, it should be doable with a couple of POST_INIT commands
18:01
*POST_INITRD_BOTTOM commands
18:01
<vandebo>
I've tried a couple different layerings with overlayfs without success. What kind of FSs would you suggest?
18:02
<alkisg>
nfs as top overlay broke at some point, i think they restored it later
18:03
It's not an interesting use case so I haven't looked into it
18:03
<vandebo>
as of 5.3 it's still broken
18:03
Ok, that was the root of my question. Thanks for your time.
18:05
(My next attempt is a writable nbd upper layer)
18:08
<alkisg>
vandebo: I would probably go with nbd cow for your case
18:09
writeable
18:11
<vandebo>
nbd-server man page says that cow option removes the file with changes on disconnect
18:12
<alkisg>
I think xnbd-server does support it though
18:12
Btw, we usually just put all possible programs in chroots, and disable the ones we don't need on boot
18:14
<vandebo>
man page for xnbd says similar, cow file is removed on server shutdown

<alkisg>
Eh well, then you could overlay 2 nbd images, a read and a writteable one
19:00* alkisg does remember a cache image for the cow part of xnbd... strange
