is there anyone who can give me some suggestion for a terminalserver (ltsp) for approx. 20 users? Or where I can find some Informations about that?
01:59
I want to use ltsp with edubuntu
02:00
maybe hardware recommendation is more specific description for my question ;-)
02:00
<uwe>
jofro, it heavily depends on what you are going to run on it .
02:00
im not an expert thoug
02:02
<jofro>
hi uwe, it is for a german school, class 1 to 9... mostly they work with office programms and addtional education software which have to emulated with wine, because its win software...
02:02
sorry for my english ;-)
02:02
<kenguru>
same situation here but different country :)
02:08
<jofro>
i read the recommendations from the ltsp site, but i need a more up to date one... maybe.. you should take the coreduo bla bla bla and dont take the ... do you understand what mean?

hello, I have a new problem not directly related to ltsp but to nfs. I cannot mount anymore from client machines. One strange thing (I think) is that the file /var/lib/nfs/xtab is empty...

moin folks, im having serious performance probs on a dualheaded ws (300MHz, MGA450, 100MBit EEpro), moving windows or switching windows is feeling sluggish, while my colleagues 800MHz with i810 reacts like local....my ws somehow feels like over vnc or such alike
02:55
anybody any hints where i could improve this or is 300MHz too weak for a WS ?
02:58meduxa has joined #ltsp
03:00
<sep>
psycodad1, i'd say a tad on the slow side. but if you use a ligth desktop/windowmanager you should get decent usage out of it.
03:04
<Patina>
My 200MHz WS (not dualhead) works quite well with Window Maker as window manager.
03:05
<psycodad1>
sep, its just strange, that when i login into my kde-session on the colleagues WS i get a perfect response, but on my box im suspecting the graphic card or the system (bus) as bottleneck, im just wonderin if there are any acceleration switches in my XConfig-4 that i missed..
03:06
<sep>
this is regular local or diskless workstations right ?
03:07
check what drivers you use
03:08
<psycodad1>
sep, its a deskpro cpq without harddrive, booting rom-o-matic floppy for eepro100, 256MB Ram and an MGA450 (or a 400, not 100% sure) and I use a XF86Config-4 which i adapted from the autogenerated for mga for dualheaded (since i never got the dualhead stuff working from within lts.conf)
03:13
i have ordered recent mga450 pci (the one i use is about 5 yrs old) i'll try with an 800MHz client and a new mga and see what happens then

LTSP Local device support - USB stick
04:08
Followed the step by step configurations and was able to make it work.. I can see the USB icon at the workstations when inserting USB stick
04:09
as the documentation says, the drive is automatically mounted and unmounted after 2 seconds of no activity
04:10
tried to open the icon and I was able to copy the files into it but when I tried to read the USB stick on my other windows machine. there are no files in it..

<vagrantc>
is X running?
12:06
<BilboFett>
I was running avast virus scan and it got to about 90% on a system scan and the screen went black. Now there's no mouse, nothing
12:06
I can hit ctrl+alt+f2 to get my shell
12:07
how can I check to see if X is running?
12:07
<vagrantc>
ps aux | egrep X
12:07
<BilboFett>
ok just a sec and thanks for the help
12:08
I guess I don't know what I'm doing
12:08

yes
12:08
ok there we go
12:08
hmm
12:09
not sure how to interpret the results :)
12:10
is there something I should look for, or, should I tell you what it says sir?
12:10
<vagrantc>
look in the far right column, and tell me what has "X" in it.
12:11
<BilboFett>
S /bin/bash/ /etc/screen.d/startx
12:11
/usr/X11R6/bin/Xorg -query 192.168.0.254 -x
12:11
<vagrantc>
capital "X" ?
12:11
<BilboFett>
ps aux
12:11
<vagrantc>
ah, that's the one.
12:11
<BilboFett>
grep x
12:11
<vagrantc>
Xorg
12:12
<BilboFett>
ok..
12:12
<vagrantc>
so... it's still running ... but the screen is just blanked out?
12:12
<BilboFett>
yup
12:12
not even a mouse
12:13
so thats my question... any way to "zap" a service into restarting, or "shocking" something into making the display come back on?
12:14
<vagrantc>
killall -HUP Xorg ... might do it. but it might just kill your session.
12:15
<BilboFett>
I don't know what happened.. was running avast.. full system scan, got to about 90%, I walked outside, came back in and the screen was black
12:15
that killall command will JUST end my root session in on the thin client and won't restart or shutdown the server, right? I'm at a school and I have 85 users on right now
12:18
<vagrantc>
BilboFett: if you run it on the thin-client, it will only affect the thin-client.
12:18
BilboFett: from the thin-client's console, that is.

19:02
dberkholz, you have an overlay you are working from?

19:03
<rangerpb>
anyone know where to fish when your ws wont start X with an error of "XDMCP fatal error: Manager unwilling, Host unwilling"
19:04
<dberkholz>
nolisten tcp in your *dm?
19:04
<rangerpb>
